College- A Dream Deferred.. Once Again, Penalizing the PoorPage 2 of 2    (1, 2)
There are some top name schools that do have free college courses online. Two of them are
http://ocw.mit.edu/OcwWeb/web/home/home/index.htm
http://www.oyc.yale.edu/
and if you would need to download technical books, you can go to
http://www.freetechbooks.com/.

There are more out there. Some with special programs that you could attend with no or very low tuition.

What do these dummies expect? California is a socialist state much like our current federal government. The only difference is California can't print its way out of a deficit. I thought Democrats were supposed to be for the poor? And yet California is very much a blue state. Of course they're controlled by Unions and special interests but hey if it's good for Obama than it must be good for places like California. Hmmmm, what's really scary is California is where the country as a whole is moving towards. In a few years 10 percent unemployment is going to be looking like the good old days. And we don't need anymore liberal arts majors so this rise in tuition might be a good thing.

RIT is in New York.

College, education, is still in a bubble right now, been overpriced for years. Since the endowments are not paying right now, YOU get too!

Four year schools are a rip off anyways, way more hat than ranch. The lack of degrees for the middle class, will only show how stupid and useless most degrees are anyways. :)

Add to that, that technology is making a lot of jobs obsolete, and lack of education of people who can't find work anyways is not that pressing a problem.

'It's all about the student, stop blaming the school. "

Sheez. Lame. It takes two to dance.

Or: It's all about the junkies, don't blame the pusher. It's all about the johns, don't blame the pimp!

The schools are pimps, opushing a product just like any other business. no morality involved.
That contract you signed is worthless. If they go out of business, or just can't aford you in a year? What then? Life is not certain.

A lot of countries in Western Europe and other countries offer free tuition with a catch.... yup.

They want their graduates to stay home.... practice law, medicine, nursing, engineering etc...at home.

Two of my cousins rec'd sizable scholarships recently...one is at Oxford.. full tuition....his younger brother...did get an overseas scholarship but after he had accepted a local scholarship .... the homeland scholarship has him bound to practice his chosen profession for a 3 year period. They are both studying medicine btw.

so... yes.. South Africa for example has had a flood of doctors leaving their country to practice overseas....we are fortunate here in my area to have those very well trained specialist....but at what cost?....their educations were paid for by the South African govt...their scholarships and tuitions, training.

so.... not fair to compare what is going on with 'free' degrees overseas.... cos nothing is free.

I don't know much about US schools...but Canadians whine and gripe about tuition too...and fact is... our schools are heavily subsidized.... ya...those high earners...who graduate with a Science or Law degree for example....they were heavily subsidized by the Federal govt.
They are paying hefty tuitions...but not the true price of the education which is substantially higher.

Someone indeed does have to pay the electrical bill. The salaries for the profs and staff...for the landscaping and artwork ....lol --- don't get me started on that one!

something was mentioned in this thread about the national debt............i wonder how many people realise just how much college educations have contributed to the national debt?..............think about it....an 18 year old is lent $20 k to $80 k.......same 18 yr old is offered credit cards.......[and usually accepts them and uses them]....for 4 to 6 yrs.....not much is repaid...........said college grad enters the workforce..at the bottom.....and hopefully in his chosen field..........but usually not....buys a house ...a car.....yada yada yada............is barely making payments on everything BUT the student loans.............then loses his/her job................

i honestly wonder how much money in unpaid student loans is owed in this country

makes you think dont it?
