Post 1980 Rolling stones.....c'mon guys, release ONE good song before you're done.

But for an overall career without question for me is Oasis, Half a good album, a few songs here and there dont cover for the fact the rest is as bland as your completely lifeless "live" shows

As someone previously mentioned on this board, "overrated" is a matter of personal preference. I happen to like some of the bands listed here, ie... The Rolling Stones & Steely Day.

Also, U2, one of my favorite bands was listed here. That's ok & that's your right. I just saw them last night in East Lansing, MI at Spartan Stadium with my brother & sister. My sibs & I are are 49-54 sitting next to a group in their 20's. It was sold out & U2 was amazing! In my opinion, U2 often thought outside of the box over their 30 plus years as a band with their songs, politics & philanthropy. I've enjoyed many bands who were not political, but admire the work they've done to help those in need, as well as their music. During a tough time in the past, many of their songs were uplifting to me, such as "Walk On". Yes, they've done songs that were political, spiritual or just a good rock song too,ie.. "Where The Streets Have No Name". Maintaining popularity for over 30 years & filling large stadiums doesn't mean that U2 is overrated to me. "We are one, but we are not the same, we have to carry each other". It's a "Beautiful Day"!

U2 used to be good when they weren't considered godlike. Their older stuff, I mean, before Pride In The Name Of Love. Since then, they've become boring, and Bono is just too...precious. "Beautiful Day" was execrable.

I think its way more fun to go to a small place and hear "lesser" musicians for "less" cost and aggravation!
There are so many great people touring and playing, I can't get excited by fighting for overpriced tickets any more.

it's funny how pretty much everyone posted popular bands that they personally don't like as being overrated.

music is subjective. how can an artist that sells millions of units and play to sold out shows every night? the fans are rating the artist by buying the product. that's not being overrated.

does a band like kiss or bon jovi get great reviews of their music? no. they never have. but do millions of people spend $100 a copy on an overrated band? ever BEEN to a kiss show?
believe the hype.

when i think of an overrated band, the first one that comes to mind is the new pornographers. the critics fawn all over them. they get hyped yet they can't take it to the next level.

here's a band that just needs to be rated:

way overrated

I gotta disagree with whomever said Tool was overrated. No band has ever come close to sounding like them. They are completely original. Nothing is even in the same ballpark. It really is that unique. Saying that the riffs are stretched over 4-5 measures is a very drastic under estimation, The meter changes in Tool's Music is a lot more complex if you actually sit down and try to play the stuff. Tool I would say in my opinion is one of the most underrated bands.

^^^^I agree with this. I have more of their music than any other artist and personally I think they are extremely underrated.

Ozzy is the furthest from overrated.
Randy, Jake E Lee, Zakk,
all these players played on some amazing tunes, sure not every album was great front to back, but if you take a collection of his greatest songs, its amazing to see the diversity between all the players

Metallica is furthest from overrated, every single metal band on the planet right now was influenced either directly by Metallica or by a band who was influenced by them. They changed styles a few times(whether you liked it or not) and you can't deny their skill or song writing ability.
This thread is all about personal likings, if you don't like nickelback and theyre popular you think theyre overrated. break it down, use something more than the fact that you dont like the band to explain why they're overrated.
Bon Jovi I think is probably one of the best mainstream artists of all time. And I'll tell you why. Not only do they have one of the top selling albums of all time, some great tunes, and know how to perform live. They've been able to succeed throughout all the popular music changes over the past 3 decades. They topped the world when Hair bands ruled, when alt rock, post grunge was big they came out with "have a nice day", "its my life" and now they've even gone into country songs and made it big there. They've succeeded in so many genres over such a long period of time that they are the furthest from overrated whether you like them or not.

personally i think nirvana is overrated.
Kurt Cobain couldnt sing, had no range and couldnt hold tune.
Rolling Stone had him as the #12 best guitarist of all time..EVH and Randy were 70 and 85 respectively. your ****ing kidding me right? Eruption...Mr Crowley..I've spent forever trying to learn those songs. I can perfectly learn a nirvana tune on guitar in half an hour.

No, every metal band on the planet INCLUDING Metallica, was influenced by Black Sabbath, Rush and Led Zeppelin. Ozzy is overrated because his music is now terrible, he hasn't put out a good song since the day Randy Rhodes died, and Zakk Wylde is one of the most overrated fret wanking hacks to ever pick up a guitar. If I want to hear crap coming out of my speakers, I will turn on pop radio. Sorry but nothing Ozzy has done since the Sabbath days and his time with Randy compares, and Metallica is a joke band who try to sound serious and are nothing short of a bunch of try hards who think playing fast equates to good music.

Foo Fighters, name one good song.

Learning to Fly, Walk, Rope (especially the Deadmau5 remix), Everlong, Monkey Wrench, Stacked Actors, My Hero, Walking After You, Times Like These and The Pretender are just a few examples.

I don't see how they are overrated really, great band with far more great songs in their catalogue then most 90's bands. Wasted Light is by far one of their greatest albums to date as far as I am concerned, and I think the time they spent apart was good for their music. Not many bands come back from being on hiatus for so long and make a huge record like they did, and Wasted Light is just more evidence that bands who have been around for 20 years actually make good music, unlike the majority of modern music today.

- ozzy has done a ton of great stuff without randy. the sales show that.
- zakk wylde is amazing and was the only reason to see ozzy live over the past 15 years.
- rush is an influence on a select number of musicians. not me. i can't stand them.
- kurt cobain was a great songwriter? show my the brilliance of this:

Mom and Dad went to a show
Dropped me off at grandpa Joe's
I kicked and screamed, said please, oh no
Grandma take me home( X8)
Had to eat my dinner there
Mashed potatos and stuff like that
Couldn't chew my meat too good
Grandma take me home (X8)
Said why don't you stop your crying
Go outside and ride your bike
Thats what I did, I killed my toe
Grandma take me home(X8)
After dinner, I had ice cream
I fell asleep, and watched tv
Woke up in my Mother's arms

Grandma take me home (X19)
I wanna be alone

singing "grandma take me home" 43 times is great songwriting?

Sales are not indicative of what makes a good song or a good album. Some of the best albums in my record collection won't or never have gone platinum. Hell, some records that I happen to absolutely love for their brilliance, are not appreciated by the radio media or most musicians in general. Ever listen to anyone who doesn't get radio play? Andy Timmons, Eric Johnson, Steve Vai, etc etc, amazing guitar players, great song writers and overall composers, none of whom have had the same radio success as Ozzy despite making far better music over the course of their careers in terms of consistency.

Ozzy hasn't made a good album in years, and hasn't had a great song that can compare to tracks like Iron Man, Crazy Train or Bark at the Moon. And you know why? Because no one who has played guitar for him since Randy Rhodes could compare to what that man could do on guitar. Ever actually heard Zakk Wylde play one of the songs that Ozzy wrote with Randy? It sounds like the biggest bunch of inaudible noise ever, it's terrible. The man is just an awful guitar player, overrated in every regard and has no substance to his music. Same with the other guy, if I want to hear people fret wank badly I will go listen to Dragonforce.

In fact, in this day in age it's blatantly obvious that even the biggest bags of crap for songs can get radio play and sell millions of albums, just goes to show you how lacking the intelligence of society is when people are willing to invest money into a bunch of auto tuning garbage and people promoting stereotypes about certain races through their music.

sales are absolutely indicative of whether something is good or not. if people like something, they buy it. if they like it, it's not because it sucks.

just because YOU don't like something it doesn't mean others don't. zakk wylde is awesome. he's considered by many to be one of the best ever. he might be the best live player i've ever seen(i wish he'd ease up on the overtones). i've seen vai, malmsteen, van halen, sariani, mcalpine, johnson...........the list goes on.

and rhodes didn't play on bark at the moon . it was jake e lee. i've seen him too. fantastic player. he didn't play on iron man either.

ozzy has done a bunch of stuff that is great without randy. deal with it.

you're wrong

Gotta disagree there. Sales have nothing to do if something is good or not. It all has to do with what gets forcefed to people on the new constricted playlists which are bought and paid for by the labels. Talent and goodness have NOTHING to do with it. Plenty of people are out there buying stuff that sucks, it's how Nickleback, Ashlee Simpson, Nsync, Hillary Duff, Bon Jovi, Metallica (since the black album) and tons of other crap bands/artists have made millions.

Disturbed, half of their songs sounds like he is choking a monkey and the other half sound like he played the first half backwards.

Godsmack, they have only made three songs and people keep buying it over and over.

Velvet Revolver, does anything even need to be said?

i have a contemporary musical knowledge where i understand that copywrighting is corrupting even publishing houses to the changing algorithim of musical genres. where bands like Animal collective and Sigor ros, radio head, have new formulae, Anything in similairties is stagnated and posted unless you have a jail get out of free card like the strokes... or mgmt. money moves art.

three fave bands

1) sonic youth
2) massive attack
3) mogwai
honerable mention Zepplin dude| rolling stones, beatles
i have played and composed music for a while sometimes tirelessly although unblished...I think modern publishing rights still need to change to encourage the relevency of the art

again, someone confusing personal taste with public opinion. sprinkled with a bit of ignorance.
lets use metallica as an example. the last 2 albums got almost zero airplay compared to the 4 or 5 albums previous to them. it wasn't force feed to anyone.

how many units sold? 11 million between the 2 of them.

how many awards? look it up. don't forget to check out "album of the year" from kerrang magazine, long considered one of the bibles of metal rags.

wake up
