Question about genetically modified foods (gmo's)Page 4 of 6    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
Two words......

Brundle + Fly

We have absolutely no idea what we are doing -how it will affect us and the environment as a whole -and if we can reverse our eventual major botch job.

We do things when we can -because we can -and the motivation is usually less than noble. Then we say oops when things go south and throw as little money as possible toward those whose lives we've destroyed -just as it is with big pharma, etc.

Billions of years in the making -and we can mess everything up in a few hundred years.....

the people who hate GMO crops would be content to let the estimated 1 billion people in the Indian subcontinent whose lives have been saved by GMO food (genetically modified what that can withstand extreme heat & drought) just die, I guess

don't affect 'mercans..better to have less world pop, maybe

I knew a guy who lost a lot of weight by smoking crack. It doesn't mean crack is good, it just means it can have a positive effect along with all of the rest.

from a newsletter"

"2,4-D.

Dow Chemical Co. calls it a weed killer. But it has the potential to harm a lot more than weeds.

As I write, Dow Chemical Co. is seeking the EPA’s approval to market its new herbicide Enlist Duo, a toxic mix of 2,4-D and glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup weed killer.

If it’s approved, it will be sprayed on millions of acres of genetically engineered crops.

This dangerous mixture has been shown to increase the risk of endocrine and reproductive system disruption, Parkinson’s disease and non-Hodgkin Lymphoma."

BigChem and BigAg poisoning us all and the environment, with FDA/USDA as captured regulators and enablers.

One Little Piggy Had Birth Defects: Is Monsanto's Roundup to Blame?

One little piglet was born with only one large eye. A second piglet was missing an ear. A third piglet had a large hole in its skull. A fourth piglet had a monstrously huge "elephant tongue." A female piglet was born with testes. Still others had malformed limbs, spines, skulls and gastrointestinal tracts.

The pigs in question belonged to a Danish pig farmer. For three years he had fed his pigs ordinary, non-genetically modified soy. When he ran out, he bought the cheaper genetically modified (GM) soy pig feed. His herdsman, unaware of the feed switch, immediately noticed that the pigs lost their appetite and that the piglets developed diarrhea. Even worse was the sudden and shocking increase in birth defects. The farmer, eager to understand the cause, had 38 of the deformed pigs euthanized and tested for glyphosate, the herbicide used on the GM soy. The results were published in the April 2014 issue of the Journal of Environmental and Analytic Toxicology. The samples of lung, liver, kidney, brain, gut wall, heart and muscle all tested positive.

( ... lots of other info you won't ever hear from GMO industry and their lobbyists, or even from mainstream media)

New Wave of GMO Crops Poised for Approval Despite Public Outcry

Despite its own admission that it will cause an up to seven-fold increase in chemical pesticide use, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is poised to approve a new type of genetically engineered seed built to resist one of the most toxic weedkillers on the market.

Another Independent Study Confirms Monsanto’s RoundUp Chemicals are Lethal, Even in Small Doses

Published just this month in the International Journal of Toxicology, the study “Glyphosate Commercial Formulation Causes Cytotoxicity, Oxidative Effects, and Apoptosis on Human Cells: Differences With its Active Ingredient,” proposes what most of us have already surmised: Glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s herbicide du jour – RoundUp – is utterly killing us. What’s more – it kills us in much smaller servings than the Agriculture industry is dishing out in its common GMO and pesticide spraying practices, and it is made stronger by the additional chemicals used in the RoundUp formula.

“Aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA), and a glyphosate formulation (G formulation) were examined in HepG2 cell line, at dilution levels far below agricultural recommendations” and they are causing toxic effects on the human genome. It is the adjuvants in RoundUp working together with the glyphosate which really causes the problem.

“The glyphosate formulation studied also triggered two ‘death proteins’ in human cells known as caspase 3/7, inducing pathways that activate programmed cell death (apoptosis), a clear sign of significant toxicity.”

news shows freaking out bout ISIS attacking USA, but BigChem and BigAg are well down the road to poisoning USA, for profit.

and it's only going to get worse:

"The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is about to issue a dangerous approval that will put our farms, our food, and our environment at risk.

EPA may announce approval of Dow Chemical’s new “Enlist Duo” herbicide as early as this week. “Enlist Duo” is a mixture of glyphosate (the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup) and the even more toxic 2,4-D (part of the chemical mixture Agent Orange).

Enlist is designed to be sprayed on Dow’s genetically engineered (GE) corn, soybeans and cotton, killing the weeds but not the crops. Monsanto’s Roundup Ready crops are already failing because they created superweeds."

High Rates of Suicide, Depression Linked to Farmer Use of Pesticides

“These chemicals that farmers use, look what they do to an insect. It ruins their nervous system,” Peters said. “What is it doing to the farmer?”

Farming is a stressful job – uncontrollable weather, physical demands and economic woes intertwine with a personal responsibility for land that often is passed down through generations. But experts say that some of the chemicals used to control pests may make matters worse by changing farmers’ brain chemistry.

Recent research has linked long-term use of pesticides to higher rates of depression and suicide. Evidence also suggests that pesticide poisoning – a heavy dose in a short amount of time – doubles the risk of depression.

Concerning Report Finds Monsanto Chemical in Hospital Feeding Tubes

New lab report testing carried out by Moms Across America has found the world’s number one herbicide, glyphosate, to be in feeding tube liquid which is given to babies and children who are in need of nutrition in intensive care. Specifically, the herbicide was found in PediaSure Enteral Nutritional Drink.

The testing found that 6 of the 20 samples tested contained ‘high’ levels of glyphosate – over 75 ug/l, which was the minimum detection level of the ELISA assay used. These levels are higher than what has been shown to destroy gut bacteria in chickens (.1ppb).

Moms Across America Founder Zen Honeycutt stated:

“It is appalling that our health care providers have been led to believe this feeding liquid is safe. Our children and loved ones believe that our health institutions are supporting their immune system and recovery, instead they are being fed a liquid which contains a herbicide that could be seriously damaging their health.”

The PediaSure Enteral Nutritional Drink tested contained GM maize (GM corn syrup) and GM soya, both of which are sprayed with glyphosate-based herbicides (these include Monsanto’s ‘RoundUp’ herbicide), during the growing season and at harvest as a drying agent.

Abbott Nutrition, the manufacturer of the PediaSure family of products, describes them as “a source of complete, balanced nutrition designed especially for children 1 to 13 years of age.”

This new testing is the latest to raise awareness regarding the ubiquitous and harmful nature of glyphosate-based pesticides. Regulators as well as Monsanto claim that glyphosate is excreted from the body, but numerous studies have shown that not only is it causing numerous health problems, it is also showing up in urine samples, blood samples, and even breast milk.

The lab results also follow the first ever pilot biosurvey on glyphosate in the breast milk of American women, commissioned by Moms Across America and Sustainable Pulse in 2014, which found ‘high’ levels in 3 out of the 10 samples tested.

Noticed when researching my dogs skin issues of late, the first thing they say is to eliminate from food is GMO corn and any wheat.

I never let her eat food with it, they said GMO corn, not just corn.

80% of us want it( labeling) but few stop buying GMO products or ask/check if it is GMO. I think we are getting better though.
If we dont want it we have to stop buying it.

The bar codes again should tell us.
"Supposedly" those stickers on fruits and veggies tell you .4 numbers mean they were conventionally grown. 5 numbers starting with number 8 means they are genetically modified (GMO). And 5 numbers starting with 9 means they were organically grown.

We can and should voice our opinions/wants to our grocers / fruit stands/farmers markets/FDA/whoever, when we have a concern.
We can ask for and buy products that say non GMO and organic.

OR
We could just post and bytch about it, but then again..maybe not that brilliant an idea.

I suspect that possibly worrying constantly over food additives, losing sleep, tearing your hair out might do as much or more damage than the actual substances themselves

Ironically, virtually every person I've ever seen who owns or works in a "health food" store looks near-dead or, obese

People who work in retail (health food stores) are paid minimum wage, or a little better, no benefits, nada. Poverty correlates well with disease and premature death.

"worrying constantly over food additives, losing sleep, tearing your hair out" = strawman

^^^^I agree extreme stress can be as dangerous to your health as sugar or poisons in a lot of instances..

Ironically, virtually every person I've ever seen who owns or works in a "health food" store looks near-dead or, obese

^^^^^^^You have been in one I see.

I see the obese ones and "steroiders" but only once have I seen one look near death and she was about 80.
In fact she did die.

Monsanto’s Herbicide Chemical Damages DNA

A new peer-reviewed scientific study has found that soybean workers exposed to glyphosate suffer from DNA damage and elevated cell death. Adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T) are the components of nucleic acid that make up DNA, and biotech is making these important parts of our biology a mash-up that no sane person would ever want to experience.

Soybean workers in Brazil exposed to fungicides herbicides and insecticides (the main three chemical classifications used extensively by the biotech farming model) experienced an elevated level of cellular apoptosis, as well as remarkable DNA damage according to the Elsevier published, Mutation Research/Genetic Toxicology and Environmental Mutagenesis.

^^^^^^^^^I went over a generalization of workers contamination/health issues on the other page.
You also started a thread on soil depletion of minerals which I have posted about numerous times in threads.

GMO isnt going away anytime soon or possibly ever , but we can try and get the best quality food we can .
Put your money where it will help towards some solutions
We can supplement in some cases the minerals we dont get in foods.( soil depletion)
Read PLU numbers and choose non gmo products
Buy products stating non GMO.
We can filter our water
We can put less crap on our skin thats toxic.
We can ask for better quality products from suppliers
Some can try and grow things they eat a lot of themselves.
You could go protest or write letters.

I never see much of,if any solution to things you go on about in your threads/ posts.
That would be a start to not "just complaining".

Thank you for that list, Ms. Peppermint!

Preston and I went organic (or as much as we can) last fall, and are definitely looking for these products now.

We're getting our vegetables, grass fed beef, free range chicken, and scrap fed pork from a local farm, but you do need staples.

I just discovered some organic hotdogs from Natural Choice, btw, that seem to be very good in term sod ingredients. And they taste great. So I was psyched about those.
