Depends which part of the breakup phase one is in. . If it's a feel sad, and cry. .
"Everybody hurts" by R.E.M.
If I want something happier and more uplifting, anything country.
If it's a think over and be glad it's over. ."Low" or "Message" by Coldplay. There are more, but these are the ones that come to mind.

I find this one gives me some comfort.

Sometimes I think it means that our paths will cross again romanticaly as the lyrics can be interpreted. Mostly I feel simply that the time spent on a loveing relationship, is never really wasted time, even when in the darkest hour, it always tends to feel that way.

Eagles - wasted time

Well baby, there you stand
With your little head, down in your hand
Oh, my god, you can't believe it's happening
Again
Your baby's gone, and you're all alone
And it looks like the end.

And you're back out on the street.
And you're tryin' to remember.
How will you start it over?
You don't know what became.
You don't care much for a stranger's touch,
But you can't hold your man.

You never thought you'd be alone this far
Down the line
And I know what's been on your mind
You're afraid it's all been wasted time

The autumn leaves have got you thinking
About the first time that you fell
You didn't love the boy too much, no, no
You just loved the boy to well, farewell
So you live from day to day, and you dream
About tomorrow, oh.
And the hours go by like minutes
And the shadows come to stay
So you take a little something to
Make them go away
And I could have done so many things, baby
If I could only stop my mind from wondrin' what
I left behind and from worrying 'bout this wasted time

Ooh, another love has come and gone
Ooh, and the years keep rushing on
I remember what you told me before you went out on your own:
'sometimes to keep it together, we got to leave it alone.'
So you can get on with your search, baby, and I can
Get on with mine
And maybe someday we will find , that it wasn't really
Wasted time

If you're feeling angry...anything hard and intense like Disturbed, Godsmack (I ****ing Hate You), and Burn by Papa Roach.

If feeling sad, plenty of softer stuff to choose from.

Forgot about this one...I Don't Care by Apocalyptica. Chorus line says it all:

"If you were dead or still alive, I don't care."

I really love this song. It always picks me so that I keep moving forward:

Papa Roach, Kick in the Teeth

We live in a cold dark world with venom in it's fangs.
You can spit it in my face but I know I'll be ok
It's on the attack. It's a war, It's a game.
A ball and chain chew my arm off to get away
Don't fight, or it deny it, invite it cause when it ..

Feels like a kick in the teeth, I can take it.
Throw your stones and you won't see me break it.
Say what you want, take your shots.
You're setting me free with one more kick in the teeth
(Na na na na na)
Kick in the Teeth (na na na na na na)

I gotta say thanks cause you kick me when im down
I'm bleeding out the mouth.
I hope you know I'm stronger now.
I'm taking the hate, I'm turning it all around.
I wont go down 'til I'm six feet underground.
Dont fight, or it deny it, invite it, cause when it ...

Feels like a kick in the teeth, I can take it.
Throw your stones and you won't see me break it.

Say what you want, take your shots.
You're setting me free with one more kick in the teeth
(na na na na na )
Kick in the teeth (na na na na na)

What doesnt kill me only, will make me stronger in my head
In my head

Cause when it
Feels like a kick in the teeth, I can take it.
Throw your stones and you won't see me break it.
Say what you want, take your shots
You're setting me free with one more kick in the teeth
(na na na na na )
Kick in the teeth
(na na na na na)
Say what you want. Take your shots.
You're setting me free with one more kick in the. teeth
(na na na na na)
Kick in the teeth (na na na na na)
Kick in the teeth (na na na na na)
Kick in the teeth (na na na na na)

Well since this song is Japanese no need to post a youtube link. I didn't feel like just doing the English translation because I would have to copy and past line by line.

Owarinaki yoru no naka de
(Inside the endless night)
Owarinaki yume wo miteru
(I see an endless dream)
Boku wa ima mo kimi dake wo sagashiteta
(I'm just looking for you now)
Ano hi mitsuketa futari no rakuen
(That day we found Our paradise)
Itsushika kataku tobira wo tozashita
(The door closed tight Unnoticed)
Hankyou ni natta boku no kokoro wa
(My heart was In ruins)
Tozakaru keshiki ni shigami tsuiteru
(I was hanging on to this disappearing scenery)

Kara no naka ni tojikomerareteiru
(Locked inside the shell)
Kimi no egao torimodosetara
(I want to get your smiling face back)

Owarinaki yoru no naka de
(Inside the endless night)
Owarinaki yume wo miteru
(I see an endless dream)
Boku wa ima mo kimi dake wo sagashitetanda
(I'm just looking for you now)

Kawariyuku kisetsu no naka
(At the gradually changing season)
Kawariyuku kimi no kimochi
(In your gradually changing feelings)
Semeru koto mo dekizu ni miokutta
(I said goodbye without blaming you)

Katen yurasu Kaze ga urusakute
(The annoying wind is swinging the curtain)
Niranda mado ni Hikari ga afureta
(Glaring at the window the light overflows)
Boku wa awatete Ryoume wo fusaida
(I was confused Both eyes shut)
Shinjitsu nado Mitakumonai kara
(The truth is I can't look)

Kara no naka ni tojikomerareteiru
(Locked inside the shell)
Boku no egao torimodosetara
(I want to get my smiling face back)

Owarinaki yoru no naka de
(Inside the endless night)
Owarinaki yume wo miteru
(I see an endless dream)

The last thing I want to do during a breakup is put on melancholic music and ball my eyes out. All I want to do during a time like that is vent and get it out of my system.

Good to see some other metalheads out there with great suggestions:

message 24 - Drowning Pool - "bodies"
message 34 - Pantera - "walk" and "this love"... i'd add "five minutes alone"

for me? anything by Parkway Drive, Pennywise or Dropkick Murphys. Top of the list would be this though from Byron Bay gods "Parkway Drive"... it's called Carrion: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhbyS1SuR7c&ob=av2n

Back in 1977 I went by GF's place and she told me it was over. Climbed into my hot little '69 Mach 1 and slapped the Nazareth tape I had been listening to back into the 8 track deck. At that point it started the next song and 'Love Hurts' came pouring out the speakers. I ripped the tape out the deck and threw it out the window. Of course a few weeks later it hurt some more when I had to pay for another tape, as I really liked that album.

I have to admit that I have been listening to the Righteous Brothers during my most recent break-up (December).

I once listened to The Wall for about a month straight after a difficult break-up in my early twenties. I may still be psychologically damaged from that month.

When me and my husband broke up about three years ago, I got into the Aretha Franklin and Gloria Gayner and Alannis Morisette power-woman songs.

So much good music, so little time. Adele is fantastic too.

I know it wasn't a 'breakup' but after my wife died I listened to The Temptations' I Wish it Would Rain and Kyu Sakamoto's Ue O Muite Arukou a lot and many others. Justin Moore's If Heaven Wasn't So Far Away and the Eagles Please Come Home for Christmas also got to me then.
