I am short so if I go below the knee it looks dorky. I try to wear skirts just above the knee but generally nothing higher. But I think it depends on height, leg length, and general comfort level.

This should be based entirely on how great (or not so great) your legs look at ANY age. Just because a girl is 21 doesn't mean she can pull off wearing a mini skirts either...(or skinnny jeans for that matter...) This should be a question not so much based on "age" but body type.... I say if you work hard on your body..you're slim and have a nice pair of legs ...wear whatever looks good on you and wear it with pride!

Chubby legs can look good - in fishnets with a short skirt. Humungous boobs can look good in a revealing top too.

While I believe women over 50 should stay away from the extremely short skirts (like the broader belt type) even if they have super legs!, above knee is definitely ok, provided the chosen length goes with the shape of the legs.

There is a certain length, somewhere around the knee, with which most legs looks good. It's easy to find the exact right skirt length for your legs when you stand in front of the mirror and pull the skirt around knee length slowly up and down a cm at a time.

I absolutely 100% agree! I am a 54 year old fit woman, I also am 6'3" bare foot, with a naurally altheltic toned body (thankfully).
I have a 27" waist and a 40" stocking feet inseam.
When I wear a 2" above the knee skirt, womens size 5, the skit length is actually 8 to 9" (depending if it is a true cut) above my knee, which would be considered a micro mini to"normal" height women.
Coupled with the fact that with skirts or dresses I wear 4 to 5" heals.
Tall women are very limited on skirt or pant leg inseam clothing unless we are financially stable enough that allows us to purchase tall clothing at a specialty store for 4 times the amount a ("normal)"- 5'4 to 5'7.height woman would pay for their size clothes.

I'm a huge fan of What Not to Wear and I agree with the "no miniskirts after 35" opinion. A lot of people apparently disagree with that advice judging from the number of over-50 women I see wearing miniskirts in the warm weather. I think an over-50 woman looks perfectly respectable with a skirt an inch or so above the knee. Anything shorter just looks like you're trying too hard.


My goodness, do people still really think like this???? 35 is the cut-off point for showing a bit of leg? Unbelievable.

Most women over 50 that I've seen wearing really short skirts look like buffoons, and are the same ones still shopping in the Junior's Department, while the young sales clerk snickers with disbelief. A woman over 50 is a middle-aged woman, not a college coed or a high schooler. She should know better that these styles and lengths are NOT marketed or really intended for a woman over 50, for godsake.


If you are a size ONE in America..then you must either shop Juniors and try to find something to work with or have a designer budget.
Not all Juniors say JUICY or PHAT.

No different in my mind. It's still a guy over 50 buying a relatively expensive sports car - one from North America and one from Germany - still an inpractical look at me look at me car that is usually driven at little more than the speed limit.

Why would buying a sports car or motorcyle or anything flashy and attention grabbing over 50 be any different than buying one under 50. What makes me laugh is people of any age who buy high performance vehicles that seldom if ever use them for what they were designed for - all show and no go if you will. I will include jacked up 4X4's that never leave the pavement in that group.

Two comments from the perspective of a man: 1) A woman should have very nice legs for an above the knee cut; 2) The lady wearing the skirt needs to feel comfortable in said skirt and not self-conscious about showing her legs. Just a thought.

I don't think size nor age should dictate what a woman wears nor what she can do. Certainly I think dross like "what to wear" on TV needs to be ignored. The presenters of that show are just out to produce dramatic transformation for TV in order to titillate and entertain their audiences. They are not there to show what's fashionable nor even what actually looks good.

Those lingerie pictures were heavily photoshopped. I'm sure their legs, thighs, and butts wouldn't look so smooth and dimple-free if you were to see them in person.

What people wear in the privacy of their own bedrooms is their business---but I personally wouldn't want to have to look at that while I was out eating dinner at a nice establishment.

Speaking as a guy, I'm happy with whatever women wear or don't wear. I do sometimes worry when I see the acres of exposed flesh whether they're going to be OK wearing that little, even though I do enjoy the view.

Hi,
I am definately over 50 years old, 5 foot 10, and 128 pounds, and a size 4, and I found thatI enjoy wearing the slim fitting pencil skirts, and "at the knee" length skirts. I can wear these to work, or dinner without second guessing my appearance or style.
I do own a few shorter ones, that go approx 2 or 3 inches above my knee, and wear them in the summer only.
I guess it is all in the matter of comfort and the occassion. For work and formal events, I keep it knee length or slightly longer- for casual and summer outtings I go for the shorter style.

I like to feel confident and at ease in my attire, and if I have doubts about anything, I leave it in the closet, or donate it.
