As a writer, I enjoy studying how languages evolved, so I'm all for the classics. Many are available for free on my Kindle courtesy of Project Gutenberg, but for the really important stuff, I buy a physical copy. Most of my "real" books come from the Norton Critical Edition series because of its excellent selection of supporting material.

I'm almost done with a very unconventional translation of Le Morte D'Arthur, Sir Thomas Malory's collection of King Arthur tales. Depending on how you look at it, Sir Thomas wrote it in either late Middle English or early Modern English. This edition's translator, Stephen Shepherd, modernized the grammar but left the original spelling intact. It's an interesting mix of old and new:

"And than Sir Marhalte avysed Sir Trystrames, and seyde thus: 'Yonge knyght, Sir Trystrams, what doste thou here? Me sore repentys of thy corrayge, for wete thou well, I have been assayede with many noble knyghtes, and the beste knyghts of this londe have bene assayed of myne hondys.'"

Heart of the Sea by Nathaniel Philbrick
Robert E. Lee The Biography by Douglas Freeman (set some time aside, it's 3800 pages)
anything Steinbeck or Hemingway
Short Timers by Gustav Hasford (the movie Full Metal Jacket was based on it)
Lincoln by Gore Vidal
Don't mind me I've read everything I can lay my hands on concerning the Civil War or as the defeated south likes to use, The War of Northern Aggression.
Ulysses S. Grant autobiography he wrote right before his death.
Making of the Prefident 1789 by Marvin Kitman (not misspelled)
Read the love letters George Armstrong Custer wrote to his beloved wife Libby. George was quite the erotic.
Anything by Leon Uris, Bernard Malumud, James Michener, James Joyce

The Unicorn by Iris Murdoch
Also before that her novel< The Sea, The Sea

Not easy reads but she explores philosophical themes, keep an Oxford Dictionary handy, if you're an American you'll need it!

He didn't like the Call of the Wild, who doesn't like that book? And he didn't like Tom Sawyer (assigned) The only books he's liked were the Hunger Games series so I give up. He's going to have to read the Diary of Ann Frank next (assigned) so that should be fun. :-[ but I know there must be lots of imitation HG type books. I tried on Amazon to find them but nothing really matched. I'll look up Terry Pratchett.

Post-modern Canadian Fiction for the most part.

Stephen King novels (I'm trying to read every single one for some weird reason. Don't even enjoy them these days)

Game of thrones (saw the show, bought the books).

Probably going to tackle some Vonnegut novels in the near future.

Piano home study method to be honest.
I have a thirst for knowledge that is not being satisfied by fiction these days.
I used to read a fiction book a week at one point and then I started writing one.
Finished as a rough draft, I suddenly had no desire to read fiction.
I should get back to that as I soooo enjoyed it at one time. hmm thanks for the reminder.

iacalli for the 14 yr old:
Anything by Robert A Heinlein or Frank Herbert.
All incredibly entertaining especially for a younger person but great at any age.
A popular misconception of SCi fi is that it is wayy out there. It's not generally.
Both those Authors are top notch. Of the two, Heinlein will also serve the dual purpose of showing him respect of women.
One of many Heinlein quotes (and I love them all):
"A woman is not property and husbands who think otherwise are living in a dreamworld"
I believe Frank Herbert wrote the book "The Santaroge Barrier" which I thoroughly enjoyed and bought countless times as gifts.
Helstroms Hive as well is great.
Everything by those two and you won't go wrong in Sci fi.
When I was that age I couldn't wait to read the next one.
"The notebooks of Lazaurus Long" is a collection of Heinleins greatest revelations or quotes but not really a book per se. Insights so profound I framed some of them.
Heinlein and Herbert. Get them all. Never look back.
He'll be ready for Tolkien after that perhaps but I could never get into his books.
