Attitude plays a huge part in how anyone is perceived.

I am very immature; therefore, I am perceived as being younger than my years.

I do not think most of us actually "look" younger, but in comparison with women who have not taken good care of themselves due to smoking, excessive drinking, or just living a hard life, we seem to look younger--they just look older.

I think that alot of it is genetic and women now get to be who they want vs being everything else to everyone...they arent the slave to the homes now...they are out and active doing things were before they raised the kids and then helped with the grandbabies...I think doing things help keep a person young.


I agree. Genetics play a major role in how youthful one looks. Some people are just blessed with good genes.


I also think most of the products are better...I love obagi...it works wonderfully for me

That reminds me of a situation from a couple of weeks ago at a local pub. My friend was obviously quite taken with one of the "singing cowboys" Apparently, he looked pretty hot to her. I didn't see it but each to their own right?
But a little later we decided to order something to eat and she couldn't see the menu....it was then that I noticed she wasn't wearing her glasses....."my aha moment."

OP, you are right. We (the women in our 40+...+...+... LOL) are finally started taking care of out skin and body, and I personally look and feel much better than 5 or even 10 years ago. The good thing is, when men start taking care of their appearance, they have the same metamorphose. It's just extremely hard to persuade a guy to start using all these anti-aging regimens, quite drinking and smocking and start excising. And I don't know a single guy who use sunscreen without a reminder!
As to the best antiage solution, my recommendation is martial arts (yoga will do it also, if you not into fighting - LOL) + Rodan and Fields skin care. Works just like magic!

To the OP:

The man I am with now is only 4 years older than me but is fully gray, dresses "older" and is mistaken as being my father often. Before him I dated 2 men, both younger by 5-9 years and everyone assumed I was their age or younger. I actually look better/younger in my 40's than I did in my 30's. Happiness with life has a lot to do with it.

Younger looking older women are hanging on to their looks longer because women have to work now, so to stay competitive in the workplace, we dress sharper, exercise more and use makeup . Also, not smoking or drinking and using sunscreen to keep skin and eyes looking younger. Tooth whitening, flat irons, contact lenses, hair dye, etc and better dental/medical care also plays a role even without cosmetic surgery or botox.

It's a little uncanny (in a positive way) how so many women are maintaining their youthful looks as they reach 45, 50 and well a beyond.

Did you ever consider the possibility that you're older and because your friends are older, that your frame of reference has aged and your preferences have aged along with you?

I will go along with this.

I also think that it is very dangerous to assume that we see ourselves "correctly" or that the comments of others are anything more than compliments. If I believed what friends and strangers tell me, I would think that I look 49 instead of 59.

There has been some discussion of skin care products, but they can only do so much. To truly have youthful skin, I echo what others have said and add:

1. Choose your parents wisely--genetics plays a huge part.

2. Zsa-Zsa Gabor said a woman can save her face or her body, so, gain weight--people who are overweight tend to look younger than thin people because the fat puffs out the wrinkles.

It is more about attitude than looks!

If you are happy with yourself......you seem to attract those that are happy as well, and if not as happy as you are, they would like to get there by hanging with you. Being happy seems to happen inside and out, and once that is there, your body has a tendency to follow.

Now, if your genetics are good, it all falls into place, but, and we need to know this, unlike our parents and grand parents, the chemicals and procedures that exist today, can help those who choose to use them, the best they can be.....and that is in the eye of the beholder tooooo.....

If we act and dress like our parents did, we end up looking like our parents, so put away the old people clothes, keep exercising, stretching, and touching yourself up as needed.....it does make a difference.

It seems to me that both women AND men, who have chosen to take care of themselves throughout their lives, and are people who also "think young" , stay young.

I've met folks of all ages that appeared way older than they are, simply because they've abused their bodies in some way, or begin to say things like : "I'm too old to do such and such ...". If they THINK they are, they ARE !

But yes - in general , we are not aging at the same rate our parents did. And if we choose to take advantage of all the current ways to extend ones life well - we can do that !

I often keep the company of people young enough to be my children, and I find I often run rings around 'em health and energy-wise.

And thank you , for posting a positive, and observant viewpoint !

I don't own stock in Obagi but have told a lot of people about it. It was recommended to me by a skin specialist in the mid 1990's, and have been using it since. I noticed last time I ordered there is a line now for mature skin so I am going graduate to that. But trust me, the all ages line will also give you a great result.

I have had one fraxel lazer treatment, last year (like the old alpha-hydroxy peel, without the chemicals) and would highly recommend that too.

I'm actually surprised to have nice skin at this age, because I had one bad sunburn after another as a kid growing up, and had a ton of freckles at one time. So even sun damage can be reversed if you are determined.

One of my girlfriends is 62, facelift, boob job, exercises daily and gets so much attention from men it amazes me. We are lucky campers living in this day and age able to maintain good looks as senior citizens!

So true! I've always been fit and led a healthy lifestyle...but never voluntarily use sunscreen. My girlfriend has to get me to sit still and rub it on me.

Re tanning. It's a cultural thing. I come from Montpellier in southern France and we like fair light skin on women....the tourists would come and want the reverse...deep tans. Local girls are all covered up and tourists often in just bikini bottoms.

Loving yourself and what you enjoy can really make us look younger....I hear alllll day abou the Sun.....I love my Tan...love the sports I do that keeps me tan and yes I do hit the tanning bed..........I have not had any touch up work done yet.. but I assure if and when I need it ....I will be in the front of the line..... for now my 5k aday , slicing down a snow ridge or jumpin a giant wake are working for me....loving to cook allows me to cook super healthy foods that are sooooooooo delicious.....

I find ther reverse.. Athletic, toned women have youthful figures. A healthy glow. In contrast, a roll around the waste looks like grandma. People in great shape also are more agile and lithe in movement. Youthful people bounce along as they walk whereas older people shuffle.

Genetics for some people it seems.A well known fitness instructor at a popular aerobics club here aged dramatically....don't overdue the cardio,take days off to rest would seem to be prudent.

I'm not sure about the mid-west, but it is a regional thing. In cities where the weather is better, people tend to be more active..even if they aren't doing sports or working out they walk more. It's also the food and lifestyle. My ex was from the mid-west and the food he was used to eating wasn't as healthy as the food that I was accustomed to.

That's because you are basing "youthful looking" on being fit. Many others in this thread are not--they are basing it on how one's skin looks. As I said earlier, obesity can actually plump out wrinkles and give a more youthful appearance to the face--IF one is only going by the lack of wrinkles.
