I think it's all the preservatives in the food we eat.

Now that is what ages you a whole lot..

Thanks for the beauty tips ladies. No I didn't take notes and no one can prove that I did.

Another thing that I noticed, along the same topic, is the continuing trend in women dating younger men. I was talking to my sister about it yesterday. Women probably don't spend much time looking at other womens profiles, but I'm noticing the age ranges going lower and lower for women. I say, good for them. It makes perfect sense as women tend to take better care of themselves and live longer.

It's good for the men too as in order to compete for the kind of woman he wants, he will have to be the best that he can be. Win win.

Maybe someone can help me out and tell me where all these young looking older women are. Cuz they sure aren't around here!

Seriously...pot met kettle!

the wide disparity of appearance of both men and women. There were men and women who looked 20 or 30 years younger than their age and some who looked older than their age. Illness, and stress, smoking and lack exercise, loss of loved ones, and the sun are the biggies. But just remember - being fit means you are willing to take care of yourself. Why should a man or woman invest time in you if you don't care enough to invest time in yourself to stay healthy?

I think there are different reason for the different looks...with what I have been thru in the past 12 years I should look 80; death of a child, cancer, chemo, spouse losing his mind to bi-polar, single mom with no income and I worshiped the sun my whole life. And at one point I think I did have that very worn out extremely tired just gave up on life look. But I realized I wasn't going to die in the 5 years the doctors gave me and I took positive steps to reclaim my life. (I did color my hair, I got a tan, I whitened my teeth, I changed out of granny clothes..shoes, bras (non-supportive), WHITENED my teeth and started using Obagi (worth it's weigh in gold, and cost almost as much) and most importantly I changed my attitude about life.

I think for some they allow life to defeat them, they give up ...some refuse to grow with the times and have a very dated appearance which makes them look even older.

So I think part genetics and part attitude along with the recent advancements of what a woman at this age actually is...in the past we were granny...we were the church ladies, we were not in positions of authority in business--underlings. Our lives were full of doing for others all the time and little for ourselves.

Preservatives can be fairly natural, like salt or sugar, or they can be complex chemicals manufactured in laboratories. According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), some of the food preservatives used to protect foods can actually harm humans when eaten in excess. Is it shocking to learn that the food industry would sell items that could be harmful to us?

To help prevent high consumption of preservatives in your diet, it is recommended to eat fresh, whole foods that are cooked by you.

One commonly used preservative is butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT)/ butylated hydroxy anisole (BHA). These are used to preserve common household foods such cereals, chewing gum and potato chips. BHA has been shown to cause tumors in rats, rabbits and hamsters. And while it has not been scientifically proven to cause tumors in humans, CSPI believes that there is a strong correlation to the same effects in humans when a chemical causes problems in at least three different species. There is a very strong possibility that these preservatives could also cause tumors in our own bodies if they are frequently found in the foods that we are consuming.

Another preservative is the nitrate and nitrite family. These preservatives help prevent discoloration in meats and are commonly added to bacon, ham, hot dogs, luncheon meats, smoked fish, and corned beef. Studies have linked eating it to various types of cancer. After ingestion, your body converts nitrites, into nitrosamines, which is a substance that can cause cancer. Research has linked high dietary consumption of processed meat that has been preserved with nitrites with an increase in the risk of stomach cancer.

That's so true. I have a girfriend who is two years younger but for some reason she comes off as being older. As each year passes, she becomes more and more of an introvert. It takes a whole lot of coaxing on my part to get her to come out and play lol..

Don't worry Paderic, you look healthy and good for your age and you look your age or a little younger. You're probably healthier on the inside now than me and many others on here.

Men have a disadvantage as some lose their hair, most have never used sunscreen or any type of skin moisturizer - us women are ahead of men in that area. Most women use some sort of beauty regime - moisturizers, eye cream, day cream, night cream, sunscreen...this helps. Men need to be taught to take better care of their skin although it would be nice to just hop out of the shower, towel dry my hair, throw on some clothes and be out the door in 5 minutes.

I also notice that leaner folks sometimes have more wrinkles that the fatter faced or overweight people. Too bad we couldn't just gain a little weight in the face instead of the butt and thighs. And those with oilier skin seems to wrinkle less as well.

I like this age, I feel good for the most part, dress well and still like to have a ton of fun with older and younger friends.

And Mae - you look great. You whole face lights up when you smile.

I have definitely noticed a lack of interest in me from men I've contacted who are 3 years either direction of my age which is 48

A lot of people forget to update their filters as they get older. For example, Leggy, your filters are set at 40 to 50. You are 48. So as I see it, you date 8 years younger but only 2 years older. Now I find you attractive and if not for you being on the opposite coast, I'd ask you out in a heartbeat. But I'm 55 and my email would be rejected because of your age limitations. Which is fine. If that's your intention.

It's possible that this might be why you aren't getting the attention that you use to get.

I also think that a lot of it has to do with age crossroads. For example 40, 50, 60. I remember being in my 40's thinking 50 was old. Naturally I don't think that so much anymore We pacify ourselves by saying it's just a number and that might be true. But it's a number that means something to different people. Lot's of people might have an age range set to something like under 50, so a 49 year old might get noticed and a 50 year old passed over. That 1 year makes a difference between showing up on someones list and not showing up. Similar to what happens when applying for a job. You don't even get a look, because you are filtered out.

I host a lot of POF parties in my area and I refuse to use the filters. I'm suppose to invite a 59 year old and not a 60 year old? Or if I set it at 30, shouldn't the 30 year olds get to meet the 29 year olds? Everyone gets invited and it works out fine.

Frankly, I think people overestimate what all those moisturizers do. I also think women tend to undo whatever good the moisturizers do with all the other stuff they put on their faces.

I've used sunscreen for most of my adult life. Being light skinned I've always burned easily and I've always participated heavily in outdoor sports, so sunscreen became a necessity early on.

Too bad we couldn't just gain a little weight in the face instead of the butt and thighs.

Perhaps, but I don't find the fatter faces of the overweight to be any more youthful looking. In fact, it's the opposite.

I think there are some amazing looking woman right here on these boards.

I could certainly do to lose a few pounds...ok, ok.. at least 10- 12 lbs.. But the thing is, when I do lose the weight it's always where I don't want to lose it. Would like to have a little more junk in the trunk haha

And Mae - you look great. You whole face lights up when you smile.

Aw, thank you...it's the even distribution of fat cells in my face ...lol

Preservatives can be fairly natural, like salt or sugar, or they can be complex chemicals manufactured in laboratories.

Manufacturing chemicals in laboratories doesn't automatically make it bad nor does ``natural'' make it good for you. Salt isn't made in a laboratory, yet it's associated with high blood pressuere. Hemlock and white death cap mushrooms are extremely toxic and are perfectly natural. On the other hand, treatments for skin problems are made in laboratories, so for example, someone whose skin might have otherwise been scarred by acne, has a shot at avoiding that and having a good complexion when reaching middle age. Aspirin, which is made in a laboratory has long been known to benefit people with cardiovascular disease and now according to recent study, aspirin has been shown to have a significant effect on reducing cancer and metastisis of existing cancers.

According to the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), some of the food preservatives used to protect foods can actually harm humans when eaten in excess. Is it shocking to learn that the food industry would sell items that could be harmful to us?

You're kidding, right? You'll be shocked to know a few other things that can kill you when ingested to excess.

Vitamin A: Liver damage, osteoporosis, birth defects and death. You can OD on vitamin A by taking large doses as supplements or eating the liver of carnivorous animals.

Water: Dinking too much water can cause electrolyte imbalances that may result in death or (probably worse) ``locked in syndrome'' from damage to the pons area of the brain (pontine myelinolisis). This is for pure water and doesn't even touch on the problems you can encounter from drinking water that has been contaminated.

I can come up a lot mor examples. Should the food industry stop selling vitamins and water?

There is a very strong possibility that these preservatives could also cause tumors in our own bodies if they are frequently found in the foods that we are consuming.

There's a strong possibility of dying from something else rather quickly if one eats food that is spoiled or contaminated (e.g., botulism).

The bottom line is that some people who were very attractive as teens or young adults, don't age well. Some people who were attractive as teens or young adults, remain attractive. Some people who were not attractive as teens or young adults become more attractive as they age and some who were unattractive as teens or young adults remain that way. It's all genetics and how one takes care of what he/she started with.

When Im with my son and my grand daughter people have assumed we are a couple and that is my child, I woman asked me if I was my daughters sister..lol...They are both in their 20s...I take it as a compliment. Its all about how you take care of yourself.

I can understand the confusion, considering that you're 39 and a grandmother, it's easy how someone could see you being closer to each other in age, because, well you are closer to each other in age.

Most people aren't used to seeing 30 something grandmothers

Actually 30 something grandmothers are the norm in most of the world and were common when most of us were growing up. They still are. My own mother was a 'great' grandmother in her mid 50's.

If you aren't used to seeing 30 something grandmothers then you just aren't recognizing them when walking down the street of any town or city in the USA. About one out of 3 American females are pregnant before they leave their teens.

Anyways, lots of great looking grandmothers. However, I'm actually 'too old' for a lot of the younger ones.

With so many divorces these days, I think it forces many to make themslves more presentable than they would be if they felt they were permanently off the market, like in the 'good old days'.

Just a thought, if you're willing to make yourself presentable "on the shelf" why do people think it's okay to let themselves slide when they're off it?

Good question...I have never let myself go, whether in a relationship or not, cuz I value myself...but I do see it pretty much everyday. Seems it is human nature to not worry about our looks when we have landed a mate. I see divorcees all the time, looking way better than they ever did when still married. Men and women.

I've used drugstore vit E oil 56,000 IU on my face for 25 years and since I spent my teen years either at the beach or in the desert, after that I stopped going in the sun. Never smoked or drank or did drugs. Ate healthy and kept my weight down plus I was blessed with oily skin.
I looked middle aged forever-I could buy alcohol without ID at the age of 13 and now suddenly the past 10 years or so everyone tells me I look young which is weird because I've had a lot of health problems and feel 75 so my inside is way different from my outside.
I just got insulted on another thread and the guy told me to "update" my pic which was taken last summer. I'm flattered. I mean from the hairstyle and sunglasses you can tell it's current. And in the past I had pics on here and got the same comments about looking younger. And I get asked out by younger guys IRL. So I guess it's what's I get for taking care of myself. And a big FU to the haters.

Genetics are the foundation, it is what you have to build on. Most people male and female do so little to build a beautiful house. They assume that it is just nature and little can be done. BUT if you work out and stay out of the sun then you can look good, as well as maintain those looks well into your old age. Instead they eat, lay in the sun, smoke and drink then wonder why they leave a fat bloated wrinkled corpse. Or they let their looks go then try to fix it after 50, no putting it back after a certain age. This goes for men as well as women.

.

I'd avoid certain clubs in Montpelier because although I was 18, I didn't look the drinking age of 16 and would die when they asked for ID. Especialy humiliating when they never asked my girlfriend. Then when I moved to Canada it was the same...still asked at 25 to show I was over 18. Uggg............traumatized.

I was in my late 20's and leading a science college trip. We stopped at a Casino in 'Jackpot' on the Idaho/Nevada border. I was asked for Id and a couple of my students weren't. By then it was more funny.

...I think the last time I was carded I was like 27 or 28....made my evening. Seems like a hundred years ago.

Back to present day.......In Canada, at some retail stores, restaurants etc. you can get the senior discount if your 55 and older. I was at Sears not long ago and happened to hit "Senior's Day" The lady at the counter asked to see my ID...she didn't believe I was over 55.....sweet. Must be the olive oil soap...lol

Mae, not to rain on your parade because you do look younger than 55, but people who work in retail (and especially servers) will insist on ID to flatter the customer or angle for a bigger tip. I did it when I worked retail and other jobs where I worked with the public.

I have been asked for ID to "prove" that I am over 55 and I have also NOT been asked--so which is it? No wonder some of us are confused. (Grin.)

My mom is in better shape than me at age 63. Her legs are toned and she has big biceps and arm wrestles with my teenage son...and wins. What keeps her looking good is her work. She works on a farm and loves it! She cuts trees down for firewood and does everything else and doesn't eat too much. I will admit though, she colours her hair because she says she's not ready to be grey. lol

I think lots of men look younger for their age too. Last year I met a man who said he was 40 and he looked it. Later I found out he was 49. He had beautiful flawless skin. I also met a 51 year old man who had long beautiful grey hair and a toned body. He looked about 45 years old and was gorgeous.

I wonder if facial structure also has something to do with how our faces age? I am pretty good at guessing people's age by looking at how many crows feet people have because most of us get them around the same time along with fine lines. These are subtle, but if one looks close enough are age revealers no matter how good a person looks for their age. Of course, there are a small handful that don't get these. One example is a 73 year old woman I know who has a smooth forehead. I have more fine lines than she has. I wonder if race also plays a role? Some races age faster than other races.

Yes, I am sure you are correct, and they are trained to ask for ID.... But on the other hand, it shows just how darn easy it is to put a smile on someone's face. :)

I was with someone at a Casino recently, and they had the senior day deals, which at this particular one, was 50. I asked about it and got the discount and the woman I was with started laughing that I qualified for a senior, when the waitress looked at her card for the discounts and said ......"You get it too honey"...........because she turned 50 the week before........LMAO

Does not matter to me what age is on that card or drivers license, because it is if we find each other attractive and want to spend quality time together or not, and that need not have anything to do with your birth certificate, and much more to do with how well you are put together, no matter the age!!

cd.............
