Thx OP!!! Well I do believe that genetics has a lot to do with it, but the way you take care of yourself COUNTS for a lot!!! Too bad I don't like to share pictures -- just two days ago I took a photograph with two family members who are half my age; I sent this picture out and most everyone replied that I looked better than my family members!!! I think a huge problem gas to do with diet and lack of exercise!! It seems to me that a lot of young kids are lazy and have horrible diets this days!!! Also. Not smoking, not doing drugs and very little drinking is what I think has helped me to continue looking young!! <img Plus of course that I TRY to eat healthy and work out!!! src=http://www.plentyoffish.com/smiles/icon_207.gif border=0> People always assume I am at least 10 years younger;) Feels good!!!

I tend to run into what I call a cultural issue. At 56, I still compete in cycling events, and will be going to Masters National Track Cycling Championships this year in Colorado Springs. Still, I run into a mindset that once a person hits a certain age, any kind of fitness beyond the standard minimum health club routine is socially unacceptable.

Escape...congrats and keep at it. I'm the same age but the attitude in Alberta is much more positive. Hiking, cycling clubs, etc. are full of older adults. No stigma at all. In fact, most energy companies, etc. encourage all employees to excel in fitness if they can. One major exploration company, I do contract work for, gives employees who run at lunch an extra 10 minutes to shower if they want to.

You'd also be pleasantly surprised by much of northern Europe.I'm fron southern France and athletic seniors are far apart but in Scandanasvia, the Netherlands, etc. often a majority of folks I've met in orienteering, cross country, etc. are over 50. Many well into their late 70's.

Anyways... keep at it. It's great to be older and be able to run circles around guys 20 years our junior.

I truly don't know how old I look! When I see a man on here who I think looks about my age, he's 10-15 years younger than me! My how I wish this worked for the men. The ones my age look like my father!

I live much younger than my parents did at my age...I think its a combination of genetics, no smoking, drugs, or chronic drinking, staying very active, setting new physical challenges for myself regardless of age, and being of that boomers generation that's always insisted on having life our way :) and seriously, being happy no matter what. 'Tude matters!

Most men say I look younger! But I am Not.
All the women in my mothers family were younger looking!
It is sometimes in the genes. I do not wear much makeup , never
did especially Not those powers and liquid stuff.

OP, to some degree modern medicine is helping people to look younger, and live longer. Likely most of the posts have discussed that influence. No doubt a lot of that is true. No doubt genetics seems to be pushing people taller, at least people of European background. Maybe also younger looking?

I have another suggestion about something else that is also likely influencing perceptions, and perhaps to a greater degree.

The internet has allowed many people from all over the world to gather in virtual towns, and we are seeing all the most attractive and most fit people posting online, especially on dating sites and treads that encourage them to do so, like this one.

OP: I have things more pressing in which to worry myself. I'm aging gracefully - and happily. I don't want to revisit my horrible twenties, as it was a time when I was constantly followed and harassed by men - old ones, particularly - because of my youth and beauty. There is reason why this stage of my life is in my past. I relish my age now.

I've also noticed, older women that tend to look younger, tend to keep their hair longer.....while as women get older, they tend to shorten it through the years.

Just something I've noticed.

There was this one woman I went out with, mid 40's, very attractive, pretty smile, and in good shape....not that she's opposed to dating men HER age, but she' snot apposed to dating men as much as 10 yaers younger, simply becuase most men her age, after they get home from work, sit on the couch all weekend watching the football games, as opposed to taking a nice bike ride together .........she wasn't asking him to exert himself, but to at least be active to a certain extent.

She was just an active older woman.

Maybe I'm prejudice because I'm in my 50's but I don't see a woman in her mid 40's as being an older woman. Older than what? 20? I just don't see the physical aspects declining at this age.

Do MOST guys in their 40's really sit on the couch and watch TV all of the time? Here I thought Floridians were generally an active society.When I was in my mid-40's I was extremely active. No way am I sitting home watching sports on a beautiful sunny day. If it's that big of a deal it can be recorded and watched later.

Your lady friend doesn't need to have a reason to date younger men. She likes men that like to do the same things she likes to do. Makes sense to me.

Its what you're used to. My friends always say that whenever they see an Asian women. I'm thinking no they're not, they look their age, same as what my mother looked like at their age. Having darker skin that can take sun well does help though as I don't wear sunscreen and doesn't seem to bother my skin much.

All outdoor activity groups I belong to (cycling/kayak/hiking), majority are in their 60's and they are amazingly fit. However, one area where I don't see any older gentlemen are in the free weight area at the gym. At most, I would see 3 or 4 out of two very busy gyms I belong to. I don't get it, I haven't lost any of my strength and am actually increasing still. Even at my age, there are only few who can out lift me and they usually have 50+lb more in body weight. What happened to all the gym rats of my earlier years?

True. I've been a gym rat all my life. A I often get 'you're pretty strong for an old guy. However, guys over 60? A couple at most and they are the same guys who have been there the last few years. In contrast, there are more older females..... Definitely some absolutely hot babes over 45.

Re a post above about women cutting their hair shorter as they get older. I can't stand it! My gal keeps hers long and it is so sexy. She'll put it up now and then but one of my favorite things is to lift her hair and nibble on her ear and neck. Short hair signals 'I'm matronly' or a grandma first in life and a sexy lady second. I suppose a woman might claim it's 'manageable' but I want as lady whose first priority is to be as sexy as hell.

I agree 100% with this--women who look matronly and men who look like my father did 30 years ago--never updated their dress or style--my kids laugh whenever they see a man with just a mustache and no goatee and say things like--hey the 80's called and want their style back! And women who wear those nurse's shoes out to clubs with dresses--seriously what is that all about!

Yes you are right on this one! I do not eat can food and watch to see what is in everything before I buy. I have had allergies since very young and had to learn to read what I was eating. Like they say "you are what you eat" !

I remember when I was a kid looking at recruiting billboars for the military. Guys in those uniforms looked old to me. Now the recruting billboards appear to have young kids in uniform.

I think its a matter of the company you keep in your daily life and your perspective. A woman may look young till you get close up...

I'd have to see a pic. of your current girlfriend to make a fair assessment. Dont forget alot of cosmetic surgery nowadays thats affordable and safe, which in the past was expensive and dangerous. You have tummy tucks, vein reduction, hair removal, eyebrow lifts, facelifts, liposuction, and of course breast augmentation, all very competitively priced. Also, women know that as they approach 50, they 'hit the wall', so they gotta keep themselves in shape or fall by the wayside.Most women whom have had children do develop (wide hips), and as you know, there are more and more that have choosen not to have kids.

Well we have photo shop, but in real life some chose healthy lifestyles, surgery and genetics are also a factor..
Some ppl tell me I look young for my age, lol, I am flattered, but, seriously if I woke up at 20 with these wrinkles and these teeth..I'd die..Or so to speak
I could mayb pass for 45 on a good day.

I like the look of an older man..And men are catching on to hormone replacement too

I do remember thinking 30s the new 20 and 40s the new 30...just can't do that anymore, naturally, need a little help from hair dye to teeth whitener, and yeah, now I use the sunscreen.
So I can take five or six years off my age, when my grandmother, rest her soul, took ten years off her age!
In the end it really matters how you feel about yourself~ acceptance.

I have just the opposite problem you guys say about women being active, and there male partners not.

I am 58, very active, build and drive Drag Race cars, hang glide, travel a lot in the Winter. All the women I seem to run into on here my age, are into needle point, going to yard sales, flea markets, and playing cards.

I would much rather be strapped into my race car, than sitting around watching TV. A good late night movie, and some cuddling, now that's another story.
