Duke Kahanomoku is considered the father of modern day surfing. He was the official international greeter of an entire kingdom. Saved several people's lives in the ocean. Won gold in the olympics (100 meter freestyle). Skipped the next one due to world war. Won gold in the next olympics and silver in the next (16 year span) losing only at a ripe age to Johnny Weissmuller. 5 medals in all. Was regarded as the epitome of humility, hospitality and aloha.
And he was the sheriff too.

Colt I think Franster P is just being rude about football because some of us stated we didn't think car racers were considered to be a sport figure since it doesn't require much physical athleticism. Rather than argue WHY he believes car racers are considered sports figures, he prefers to insult football as a sport. Obviously he hasn't grown up yet.

I know. nance, so race car driving is more physical than humans hitting each other? Is that what he's saying? Don't get me wrong you can get f*&ked up in a car, but to me driving a car requires less athleticism than actually getting out on a field running around, I'm not discounting race car driving but machines are involved in that sport,

Racing in a car on a track is a very violent activity, there is no person to person contact but the ride in the seat is not a soft cushy one. Racing a road coarse is a full on thrash fest and after 10-15 laps most people have had enough.

Until you have spent time in a race car when it is being driven close to its limit you have no idea what it is like.


If you measure legends by the sacrifices, commitment and ability, then I would have to say it would be 26 time Isle of Man TT winner Joey Dunlop.

Think race cars are a crazy ride, try going as fast as you can on a bike around country roads and city streets, with nothing more than a couple of hay bails between you and light pole or a stone wall.

Where just one lap is going to take you 17+ minutes.

I said you can get messed up in cars, as far as bike racing i think that's more physical than race car driving, theirs a more human element to that sport, Like I said I'm not "discounting" racecar driving but at the same time I am going to stick to my word there is not much athleticism when all you have to do is put the peddle to the metal(there is a strategy to win a car race).

Have to, to cope with the stress on the body, the G forces.
Must be the cultural differences.

i'd have to say michael jordan. how he elevated the game of basketball is showed to this very day. everyone wants to wear his shoes and clothes. theres no other legend like this. not knocking my dawg cashes or the william sisters.

That guy was born a racer.

Very few can and have dominated like the Dr. and on multiple manufactures as well.

Great profile of Rossi and Biaggi in the documentary Faster along with some great incites in to Moto GP and how they transitioned from the two stroke to the four. Also cool to see the difference in their heart rates. It was like Rossi was out for a Sunday drive and still kickin azz.

Faster will give anyone a new appreciation for how crazy a Moto GP pilot must be.

I've grown somewhat as i now feel that there can be no number 1 sporting legend as sport is not about winning or being the best, it's about trying your best and enjoying yourself, about growing, about friendships and achievments, about working with and helping others
Being no 1 detracts from that, takes the sport out of sportmanship!
