Is it too early to call the GOP-run 114th Congress a failure?

If I were a Republican voter, I wouldn’t be particularly pleased with what my representatives have managed to do so far — in fact, it’s been more like a month-long string of pratfalls than anything else. There was the abortion bill they introduced and then pulled over language concerning rape victims. They did pass the Keystone XL bill, which will be vetoed — and their timing wasn’t great, given that with gas at $2 a gallon, people aren’t feeling a desperate need for Canadian tar sands oil. Their alternate plans for immigration and health care are nowhere to be seen.

Now look at the news just from the last day or two. Republicans tried to pass a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security and repeal President Obama’s executive actions on immigration. Senate Democrats filibustered it, and in its current form it’s dead, meaning we’re headed for another shutdown mini-crisis. Spoiler alert: Republicans will lose, caving in and funding the department. Then the House took its 56th vote to repeal Obamacare, and as Dana Milbank reports, even Republicans themselves can’t get excited about that. “For much of the debate Tuesday afternoon, no more than a dozen seats were occupied on the pro-repeal side of the House. More than once, the GOP had nobody available to speak.”

It seems as though Boehner and the GOP don't just lie to the American public:

(Reuters) - A senior Israeli official suggested on Friday that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been misled into thinking an invitation to address the U.S. Congress on Iran next month was fully supported by the Democrats.

Netanyahu was invited by the Republican speaker of the house, John Boehner, to address Congress on March 3, an invitation Boehner originally described as bipartisan.

The move angered the White House, which is upset about the event coming two weeks before Israeli elections and that Netanyahu, who has a testy relationship with Democratic President Barack Obama, is expected to be critical of U.S. policy on Iran.

"It appears that the speaker of Congress made a move, in which we trusted, but which it ultimately became clear was a one sided move and not a move by both sides," Deputy Israeli Foreign Minister Tzachi Hanegbi told 102 FM Tel Aviv Radio on Friday.

The interviewer asked if that meant Netanyahu had been "misled" into believing Boehner's invitation was bipartisan, a characterization Hanegbi did not contest.

In other news, science leaves more of the GOP behind:

We aren't the stupid party. That was the word early this week from GOP central command. From now on, Republicans are four-square behind vaccinating children against deadly diseases. Welcome to the 19th century. Louis Pasteur is smiling down.

Sadly, Governor Chris Christie and Senator Rand Paul, leading Republican lights and likely presidential candidates, didn't get the memo soon enough. They suffered a bout of hoof-in-mouth disease that led them to try to play nice with the activist anti-vaccine crowd (also known as: those most likely to vote in early 2016 caucuses and primaries).

It appears that it takes a while for some in the GOP to come into the real world and reality:

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) — A Republican congressman is brushing off criticism from conservatives angry that he didn't vote to repeal President Barack Obama's health care law.

U.S. Rep. Bruce Poliquin of Maine joined Reps. Bob Dold of Illinois and John Katko of New York to become the only three Republicans to vote this week against a proposal to repeal the Affordable Care Act.....

Dold previously opposed the Affordable Care Act but said it's time to stop talking about its flaws and to start talking about fixing them. "Casting yet another symbolic vote for full repeal of the law, without any replacement legislation, simply distracts us from the work that must be done to drive costs down, restore access to care and make healthcare work for everyone," he said in a statement.

It only took 56 votes to repeal ACA for these GOP congressmen to determine that doing the same thing over and over again expecting different results is the definition of insanity.

A Juvenile GOP
By Eugene Robinson - February 6, 2015

WASHINGTON -- Bang. Bang. Crash. That was the sound of the Republican majority in Congress shooting itself in both feet, then tripping over them.

At a moment of heightened concern that terrorists in the Middle East might stage or inspire attacks on U.S. soil, the GOP-controlled House and Senate are unable to agree on a bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security. If the party's aim is to show Americans it is ready to govern, we are witnessing an epic fail.
....
No, you can't repeal Obamacare, but you might be able to make it work better for your constituents. No, you can't undo Obama's immigration actions without passing legislation that the Senate and the president find acceptable. No, you can't hijack funding for a crucial government agency without suffering political damage -- and ultimately folding because you don't have the cards.

The GOP apparently hopes the display of juvenile behavior we're witnessing will inspire voters to give the party even more power in 2016 by electing a Republican president. Good luck with that.

Joe, you were right...the GOP couldn't follow and now they can't lead:

The surprise 224-203 defeat of the legislation was a major embarrassment for House GOP leaders. Next steps were not immediately clear.

Some conservatives opposed the bill because it left out provisions to block executive actions President Barack Obama took on immigration, which Republicans have vowed to overturn.

House leaders tried to win lawmakers over arguing a three-week extension bought them more time to fight Obama while his immigration directives are on old in court.

But conservatives abandoned the bill in droves and Democrats refused to make up the difference, pressing for a full-year funding bill instead.

Maybe they could pull the Teapuppets back in... if they offered to add in a small tax write-off on "Italian liquor carts"... and face lifts...?

And that is because theses teanuts couldn't tack on their bill to undermine Obama's immigration bill.
These low life miscreants are holding DHS funding hostage because of an immigration bill; can you imagine?

And then they call themselves "patriots"; while in reality, they serve as the biggest internal detriment to health & well being of this nation. In most any other country, pple like this would be jailed for sedition.

Which BTW, I dunno if anyone here has heard Jeb Bush's latest expressions on how to deal with the immigration issue. It went something like this:

" no one is gonna deport 11 million pple anywhere...we just have to get them legalized...so they can contribute meaningfully to this economy"

This ^ sounds like AMNESTY to me!
Now I'd like to see how many Fox news pundits call him out on this like they did to Obama!

azzholes

What makes them way worse than ***holes, is that they also know that 85% of those who are in the DHS are sworn to work regardless if they are paid or not. This was built into the contract so there was no disruption of work in a time of crisis when no paychecks could be issued, but the GOP low lives are using that clause to castigate both the workers as well as the public just to vaunt for their own agenda!

I knew Jeb Bush torpedoed himself when he said that illegal immigrants are coming here to follow a dream. That is toxic language for anyone seeking the nomination from the right in today's Republican world.

CPAC is classically a Roman colluseum where the raw meat gets thrown to the crowd. Its where Donald Trump can appear to have support for a presidential run.

Moderates get the majority vote. And that's how the election gets won. Jeb will bring the whole Bush administration bureaucrats back, pulling the same old switches behind the curtain. And that's what the rich boys feel comfortable backing--the people they know.

And that's how elections get won--even in the days of Greek and Roman democracies.

They've had... how many years...? to "calm down" enough to ALLOW "reality to dawn on them"... and they haven't been able to do it... if anything... they are more batsh!t crazy now than in '08...

Do you REALLY "hope"... or is that just a bit of "self comfort"...?

Yep they are more batshyte crazy now then they were in '08'...the "hope" is that they "calm" down, become disenchanted with a moderate like Jeb, and stay home on election day. Or they go nuclear and put up their own extremist evangelical government in a bathtub conservative candidate as a third party option...and completely destroy the GOP for years to come.

Fvcking amazing Joe....the GOP couldn't even pass a fvcking ONE week DHS bill without democrat support. At least democrats love this country and do the right thing. DHS with immigration attached as an amendment is DOA...but the teapuppets can't accept that...teapuppets truly don't love this country

WASHINGTON (AP) — Two months into full Republican control of Congress, GOP leaders are struggling to demonstrate they really are in charge.

The stunning House defeat Friday of a three-week spending bill for the Department of Homeland Security exposed Speaker John Boehner's weakness in the face of rebellious conservatives.

It also again demonstrated his need to rely on Democrats at critical moments as the minority party's agreement to a one-week spending bill helped the speaker get it over the finish line with only hours to spare before a threatened agency shutdown.

The Republicans have the challenge to face that they are no longer a single party. They purposely chose to gain their technical majority, not by persuading everyone to support their actual agendas, but by hiding their primary agendas, and arranging a coalition of actually conflicting groups. They did this by promising, or at least strongly implying, that they would do certain things for each member of their coalition, which they actually never really cared about.

That's the problem with "growing" your party by choosing mates based on mutual hatred of others, rather than by similarities of hopes for the future. Still celebrating their great "victory" of 2014, they and their adherents (especially the self-satisfied members here) failed to recognize that lies are only hilarious fun when you tell them to your enemies.

As for who "loves America" more, that's another destructive political idiocy that ALL our political parties have played with like a loaded gun, for a long time now.

No one seems to realize that declaring that you love America more than your neighbor, means that you actually HATE America. At least half of it. And as long as you do, you are going to be acting to bring the whole thing down. Kinda like what that great Republican Lincoln said.

you should read Nancy Pelosi's comment again. You're getting stung by the reading comprehension thing again.

This is the problem with the teapuppets...they're so dumb a box-o-rocks seems intelligent.

We know Republicans don't have the leadership ability to fund a department that is tasked with the security of this country.

The Repupuppets can't get a ONE WEEK DHS funding bill passed without Democrat support...in fact, the Repuppets can't get anything done without the Democrats ...all the House can pass without Democrat support is ACA repeal which won't gain any traction in the Senate. These teapuppet terrorists will show just exactly how anti-American they are if some jihadist violence happens on American soil.

Thing is, the teapottiers don't *do* source documents, because they come without instructions. If they can't get it with commentary, they have no idea what they're supposed to think. Ever notice when you're googling one of their little gotcha set pieces that you never get an original source, just page after page of breitbart et al all quoting each other? As close as they can get to original is a quote from the Moonie rag.

>>>ironically, the people most concerned the government is misleading them, get misled by their favorite talking head who only gives them half a quote or half a story. That being said, its not abnormal for law makers to not know/have read the entire bill they are agreeing to sign into law. So many bills are pre-written by a political interest, then handed over to a representative to submit it with little editing.

I agree^^^^^^^

the majority of the work is done by underlings and the principals are simply given a rundown of the whole in a nutshell.
I doubt any of the people signing on to the ACA knew much about it's context and Princess Pelosi let it slip out.

during my recent surgery I had to sign a bunch of papers, maybe a dozen in all. the doctor's assistant handing me the papers would say "all this says is....." but the thing they want you to sign states in part "i have read and I understand that.....".

well I read each one of them perhaps to the shagrin of the assistant.

Must be a RINO that said this:

House Homeland Security Committee member Rep. Peter King today called some members of his Republican caucus "self-righteous and delusional" for opposing a bill that would fund the Department of Homeland Security.

"I said the other night, when I was at the Republican meeting, that they are self-righteous and delusional," King said on "This Week" of the Republican contingent holding up the bill because of their opposition to President Obama's executive action on immigration.

"We're talking about maybe 40 or 50 people at most, out of a caucus of 247, out of a Congress of 435. We cannot allow such a small group to be dominating and controlling what happens in the United States Congress, especially at a time when we're confronting terrorism," the New York Republican told ABC News' Martha Raddatz.
