I'm good with protection from the military or the police. You know, the professionals. What I'm not okay with is any idiot out there packing a gun. So unless you are in the military or on a police force, I don't need your protection. And you don't strike me as being capable, you strike me as someone that would hide behind gramma. The same applies to Madelaine or who ever she is now or the blonde. Arm school teachers...geez. I just find it so sad that you folks think everyone should be armed.

I don't personally think the arming of teachers is a good idea either.

The schools here all have SRO officers (regular police officers assigned to the schools) during school hours.

I just don't know if some would be able to function in the manner required for a active shooter situation.

Our active shooter training in the schools was very specific in that if you were the initial officer on the scene your sole purpose was to determine the location of the shooter advise dispatch and turn off your radio, advance to that location, not to render
assistance to any wounded, no regard for screams for help. You locate the shooter, you don't announce your prescence, you don't give verbal commands to drop the weapon or surrender. You're ordered to take him out with extreme prejudice. No warning shots no shoot to wound no anything, except neutralize the threat.

I don't know if an average teacher would be able to do that.

Yes, you are correct. I married a police officer, the majority of my friends are in the police force or recently retird plus I have many retired military vets as friends. There are maybe two on this thread that could handle the task you described above...you and one more Crook. Most that boast "get me a gun" or " arm everyone" don't have a feiggin clue and would cry like babies at the sound of a firecracker at Halloween .

The RCMP officer shot in St. Albert, Alberta on Saturday will be taken off life support tomorrow (head shot) and the other officer was released (through the side and out his back). The one on life support has a wife and three young children. This is sad, sad. They are in a way my extended family so when folks talk out of their azz, puff up their chest I consider the source and call bullshit.

Ta Cautiousluv..I figured the rationale is derived from their militia system..citizens taking responsibility for their own safety. Yes, I thought that within that framework, they differ from the US in that they strictly vet people on an individual basis. This is just what what I extrapolate.
Is the reason even necessary for issue of gun licences in the US. Just issuing guns kind of randomly without needing reasons cited, nor sufficient training that at least bears some similarity to police officer training (for self-protection), defies logic..... a good example, from a voice of experience vvv

For protection, why bother hassling the police or joining their ranks and go through all the rigmarole when you can just play at being cops. I'd rather leave it to the professionals.. You guys have had the 2nd amendment to invoke since it's inception I take it. It's been around longer than terrorism.

How about laws, enforcing them, making them stronger and making the courts follow through on the laws.

I have to agree with this. And putting in more resources where necessary.

This just shows you don't know, what you don't know. In the USA, every Able Bodied Male 17-45 is a Member of the Unorganized Militia. If they have formerly Served on Active Duty in the Regular Military, then they're a Member till they're 64. In the USA's Army, there is 3 different classes of Soldiers..
RA (Regular Army), AR ( Army Reserve) both Active Reserve & IRR, & the NG (National Guard)

As I served 4 years Active Duty in the RA (Regular Army), I'm a Member of the Militia till I reach age 64......

This link covers it pretty good....... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militia_%28United_States%29

The reserve militia

All able bodied men, 17 to 45 of age, are ultimately eligible to be called up into military service and belong to the class known as the reserve militia, also known as the unorganized militia (10 USC). Able bodied men who are not eligible for inclusion in the reserve militia pool are those aliens not having declared their intent to become citizens of the United States (10 USC 311) and former regular component veterans of the armed forces who have reached the age of 64 (32 USC 313). All female citizens who are members of National Guard units are also included in the reserve militia pool (10 USC 311).

Other persons who are exempt from call to duty (10 USC 312) and are not therefore in the reserve militia pool include:

The Vice President (also constitutionally the President of the Senate, that body which confirms the appointment of senior armed forces officers made by the Commander in Chief).
The judicial and executive officers of the United States, the several States and Territories, and Puerto Rico.
Members of the armed forces, except members who are not on active duty.
Customhouse clerks.
Persons employed by the United States in the transmission of mail.
Workmen employed in armories, arsenals, and naval shipyards of the United States.
Pilots on navigable waters.
Mariners in the sea service of a citizen of, or a merchant in, the United States.

Many individual states have additional statutes describing their residents as part of the state militia; for example Washington law specifies all able-bodied citizens or intended citizens over the age of eighteen as members of the state militia, as explicitly distinct from the National Guard and Washington State Guard.[43]

There isn't a firearm problem, there is a society problem

It is societies problem when almost any nut is allowed to own a weapon...and in some states actually encouraged to do so. Weapons like the AR15 with 100 round clips are not hunting weapons they are not target shooting weapons, they are assault type weapons-weapons of aggression, and have little legitimate place in the hands of the public in a civilized society.

I think you've missed the point....while all men in America may be considered part of the unorganized militia....those that haven't served may have no weapons training what-so-ever, but that doesn't stop them from owning a weapon. While in Switzerland, all men have been trained in the militia with weapons, are issued those weapons, and are responsible for those weapons and the ammunition issued for the weapon-the Swiss are held accountable at all times for their government issued weapon and regular inspection of the weapon and ammunition is done to ensure there is no unauthorized use.

Therefore there is no correlation between the unorganized militia of the US and the regulated militia of Switzerland.

couple of things who cares if the weapons are used for hunting? doesn't say anywhere in the Constitution that citizens have the right to keep and bear hunting arms and who are you to say what has a place in the civilized world? look at all the unrest around the world, governments getting overthrown by armed militants, terrorist groups waging wars on governments, civilians getting abducted and killed..I think assault weapons are any other weapons definitely have a place in "civilized society"...bet all those civilians living in those countries wish they had a way to defend themselves..

once again it doesn't say anything about citizens having to be trained to enjoy the right to keep and bear arms..so there doesn't need to be any correlation between the unorganized militia of the U.S. and that of Switzerland

Finally! Someone stepped in that poo pile.
Read my lips. The Second Amendment has nothing what so ever to do with sport shooting, hunting, competitive match shooting or even the defense of one's home, possessions or self. It was penned by our founding fathers solely as a deterrent to tyranny brought on by government overreach. It is an insurance policy paid for in blood and lives that guarantees the Constitution and Bill of Rights. All other legal activities involving a firearm are secondary.

Now. Since you mentioned the AR15. How, is that rifle any different than, say, a Remington 740/7400 or a Browning Sporting BAR? Other than the similarity of the AR15 to the M16, they are all gas operated semi-automatic rifles. They all use detachable magazines. Oh, and AR15's DO NOT use "clips". They use a magazine. "Clips" are what are used to load the magazine.

edit:
And yes, the AR15 does indeed have a sporting purpose. I in fact hunt coyote and deer with mine. It is a rather accurate rifle that shoots sub MOA.

Incorrect. AR-15 rifles do not have "clips" as you say. Learn the simple basics before spouting nonsense. Enthusiast target shooters would not wish unreliable and toy-like aftermarket junk 100-round magazines on his/her rifle.

Yes, this is incredibly sad - I'm from St. Albert. We have "gun control" here - fat lot of good it does. The bigger problem is the creep who shortly after offed himself was a career criminal and shouldn't have been on the streets in the first place but was because of a bleeding heart judicial system. Having said that, I can see even further carnage if every person in the casino it happened in had a gun, took aim and shot each other in their frightened, untrained state.

Nope, you want to know what is REALLY pathetic? The fact that you are unable post anything without making personal attacks.

So I guess that explains why your is laced with personal attacks.

That said, you also really should watch calling others out on making false statements when it was you who said this:

"As a reminder: Switzerland has one of the highest gun ownership rates in the world and yet, virtually no gun crime."

Which was proved to be a completely false statement.

So will you own up to your mistake or did you intentionally post false information?

Well Cautious, when I see people like you and that other Sky is Falling Madelaine yammering about arming teachers, all pizza delivery people or every one going to a movie theatre should be armed (this was after that other shooting) I have to mention how stupid I think you are. When is see little idiots like Eric posting about how he's going to defend everyone, I also have a good laugh. I don't get this gun mentality, not one bit. The three of you yap a good story but you're cloistered in your homes afraid of the bad guys or perceived bad guys at every turn.

I'd rather be "crude' or "vile" than stupid and make up stuff to be afraid of. Do you know how many people are shot in your country every day - and I'm not just talking pizza delivery folks or those shot by their children while shopping at Walmart. Stupid people packing guns...to go get their mail, pick up groceries. grab lunch at a cafe. Sad. And you probably have a higher chance of a slip and fall incident at Walmart than you do of being shot by a bad guy.

According to Snopes, it's true. \
http://www.snopes.com/politics/guns/switzerland.asp
So if you have a problem with it, take it up with Snopes

I am having troubling finding the part where it states that there is virtually no gun crime.

Though that might be due to the fact that snopes agrees that firearms are issues to people but that it also states that Switzerland has a lower rate of gun deaths than the USA but also higher than the rest of the world.

Ergo, your statement is bullsh*t.

So unless you can provide something that backs up your claims of virtually no gun violence you are showing yourself to be very disingenuous or very stupid.

So which it is, do you know what you where posting was false or did you know and post it anyway?

Funny thing about that Snopes article...it clearly shows a degree of gun control that "some" Americans would not accept here:

The Swiss army has long been a militia trained and structured to rapidly respond against foreign aggression. Swiss males grow up expecting to undergo basic military training, usually at age 20, after which Swiss men remain part of the "militia" in reserve capacity until age 30 (or age 34 for officers). Each such individual is required to keep his army-issued personal weapon (the 5.56x45mm Sig 550 rifle for enlisted personnel and/or the 9mm SIG-Sauer P220 semi-automatic pistol for officers, medical and postal personnel) at home.

When their period of service has ended, militiamen have the choice of keeping their personal weapon and other selected items of their equipment. In cases of retention, the rifle is sent to the weapons factory where the fully automatic function is removed; the rifle is then returned to the discharged owner as a semi-automatic or self-loading rifle.

To carry firearms in public or outdoors (and for an individual who is a member of the militia carrying a firearm other than his Army-issue personal weapons off-duty), a person must have a permit, which in most cases is issued only to private citizens working in occupations such as security.
Read more at http://www.snopes.com/politics/guns/switzerland.asp#uHh8jvjqg5OFGIRr.99

In other words-every weapon in Switzerland is registered and everyone who carries a weapon outside must have a permit to do so.

That is a storyline that Liberals have been breathlessly trying to sell for years.
The FBI data doesn't support those assertions. CCW and other lawful gunowners don't even present a statistical sliver of crimes committed with firearms. Liberals may think there would be gunfights over the wrong change given by a newsstand clerk or due to a minor fender-bender in the streets. Liberal fantasy has not been realized in that regard.

Yup, and the toddler who just killed his mother at a Walmart after playing with the gun she had in her purse? Explain that. The idiot who shot Trayvon Martin just happened to be driving around, packing a gun...doing what? And the list could go on. Shot by her toddler at Walmart...how do you explain that to a 6 year old or 10 year old - you shot your Mom. Nice.

You may be intelligent Becky but the thought of you packing a gun is scary. The thought of Madelaine or Hondawhatever packing a gun is scary, in fact I think she's a little nuts. Same applies to Cautious. You'd all run scared to the nearest police station....which is what you should do - let the professionals handle it and not some Gomer with a grade 10 education that packs groceries at the Piggley Wiggley and has a gun strapped to his leg....or a school teacher.

I see. You're one of Those with Their interpretation.
There is but One interpretation of the Second Amendment.
Might I suggest you read up on the English language and how it was used by our founding father in their era. I've no doubt James Madison would fully support what I wrote earlier.
They, our founding fathers, risked everything they had. Their homes, their fortunes and even their lives to be free of the burgeoning taxation and tyranny imposed by England and they also thought it only fitting that all future Americans should have the means to deter tyranny.

If not for the Second Amendment, what do you think the First Amendment would look like today?

George Zimmerman was acquitted by a jury of the charges of second-degree murder and manslaughter.
He might not be an individual any of here on this Forum would invite to a backyard barbecue party, yet the subsequent investigation determined he did not break laws to be found guilty.
