NG and Dan, they're serving up pressed meat at Applebees. That's the lowest of the low.

Growing up, we had a chicken coop on my parents' hobby farm. Raised 50 chicks every season from the small-town hatchery a few miles away 'til grown, and butchered them in the fall with our own hands. No antibiotics or medicated nitrates or whatever people believe is tainted. Just cracked corn and the leftovers from our own meals- usually out of our own garden.

No offense to Mom, but I still prefer the grilled fillets, rice and dressing that comes in an Applebee's Fiesta Lime chicken over I don't know how many ways we ate the 'real' stuff at home. No, of course I'm not going to eat that one meal every damned day. I just don't care how snooty or purist people get over the source of their prepared food - it's still goddamned bird meat - and it can still be ruined if prepared improperly.
------------------------------------------------
Complaining about food in our western society for the most part is just people screaming about their own vanity. Hardly ANY meals out of billions prepared daily could be a serious health threat. It's just another thing a long line of "I Want"s that people have decided to turn into "I DESERVE"s. So you go ahead and drool over that perfectly grilled, organic, farm-raised, sustainably prepared bird -- I still have visions of my Dad reaching into a freshly-plucked bird cavity to pull out the entrails and seeing a geyser of bird sh1t launch across the barn floor. And the dog trying to lick it up. THAT bird was REAL.
------------------------------------------------
I have a problem with Gluten in my diet. A food allergy, more or less. That means Bread is off the menu for the most part. Yet I have to listen to hundreds of people do their syncophantic rantings over their latest holiday cake creations and complimenting the office floor manager at work for their daily choice of processed bagels or donuts, which usually end up on a table directly behind my workstation, and easily within reach. I ignore it. I let it go. There's no reason to get wound up and selfish over my diet being the exception to what everyone else can do. I just leave the bun in the upper half of the sandwich box and eat the patty with my fingers if needs be.
------------------------------------------------
Food is there to keep me from getting cranky and run down, and that's about it. If impressing a food snob comes first on a date over actually making conversation and learning about each other, then I'm out. End of story.

Mustang,

I don't recall if I've been in that hotel.

I think it's a great idea to look at your local paper/online and see what's going on locally that's free. You can branch out to other towns too. If you go to free things where there are booths of crafts, you can buy the gal a trinket, something to remember you buy, like costume jewelry earrings, something small. I have a beautiful piece of metal with a hummingbird painted on it that I love. I forget how much it cost, but very little. Find the live bands, get schedules of places and times to go there. The Fire & Ice thing is cute. It may only take a short time to look thru it, I can't tell. For restaurants, you look online for reviews to avoid getting a bad meal. Go to Burnt Park for a walk/picnic. See if you have a walk on ferry nearby. I don't understand why the focus is on restaurants.

You look like you really live in the sticks, but the town is cute. https://www.tripadvisor.com/Tourism-g33807-Hebron_Connecticut-Vacations.html

Dan, here you go. Learn how to make it and wow a date: http://www.flavorfuljourneys.com/applebees-fiesta-lime-chicken-copycat-recipe/

Dan, you must understand the difference between home grown food and animals. No hormones, no antibiotics, no pesticides. Those toxins kill your kidneys and do many other things. I don't really eat meat, but I do give my dog only hormone and antibiotic free meat and organic meat. Hopefully, you won't succumb to the effects of poor eating. Genetics plays a big role. Are you talking about a first date or dating in general, in terms of not wanting to impress food snobs? If you don't care to eat good food when you're out, focus on non-food activities. You kind of sound like you don't really want to do anything or have any interests. Find someone who doesn't care about food quality and thinks the sun and the moon rises sets on you, but I think the bloom is off the rose. You're not looking at meeting a wide-eyed innocent 18 year old that is naive about life and falls in love that way. I think older women are more sophisticated and expect nicer dates.

Those crappy food places are good after work get togethers with co-workers.

My grandparents had a farm. There were times when that farm stood between me and going hungry. So I killed chickens, plucked them, cut them up. Butchered hogs. Milked cows. Weeded the garden, dug up potatoes, you name it. Some parts weren’t too bad. I rather liked the milk cows, they were friendly beasts. And plowing with a mule, while hard work, wasn’t so bad either. The mules were friendly, and we got along.

When we butchered chickens, my grandfather would cut off their heads on a chopping block (an old log). And then throw them out into the yard, where the headless chickens would thrash around in a great furor for several minutes. When I was a little kid, I thought that was really bad stuff.

But one of the grossest things I ever remember – we tore down an old chicken coop when I was about 10. Under the floor of that chicken coop, the cyckroaches were literally inches deep. Seems they eat, and thrive on, chicken sh__. Several square yards of cyckroaches, inches deep, that’s a nightmare scenario for you.

You kind of sound like you don't really want to do anything or have any interests.

Regardless of the math rant I have in the main text of my profile - I have about fifteen 'Interests' listed - that have always been there - sometimes more - which is about fifteen more than most female profiles.

Being sophisticated about taste doesn't mean being complicated or restrictive. A good, sophisticated cook can use about five spices to prepare virtually any meal with adequate success - and it doesn't matter where the hell the food came from, or what current state it may be in, or how fancy the kitchen space. Give me a lady that figures out how to use the last freezer-burned half chicken to feed a family of four over someone nitpicking 30 minutes about the color of the breast skin at an organic market (that they are going to peel off anyway).

Sophisticated people aren't worried about cancer from food because they make the best of what they've got. They would take a bucket of leftover KFC chicken and heat it up in the oven and serve it on good dishes. Complicated people won't even try. Simple people like me would eat the stuff right out of the fridge (minus the Gluten filled breading, gravy and macaroni) to save the prep time and washing dishes.

Dan, I can easily cook food with less than 5 spices, did you mean less than 5 ingredients? I can do that too. Why does the chicken have to be freezer burnt, lol. Freezer burnt or not, I can still turn that into food for 4. Half a chicken is about 2 pds, so 1/4 pd of meat per person. Freezer burnt meat is safe to eat, but the quality won't be good. I'd stew it, maybe chicken stew, chicken chilli, chicken a la king, the list goes on. I'd feed it raw to my dog.

Mustang, that is the selling point of crappy chain food, it will pretty much be the same no matter where you are eating it, but that sameness is that it's crappy, LOL! Though, some places put mustard on burgers, surprise, lol!

I wonder if Pig is having a holiday meltdown. Some people don't like the holidays.

Why would you assume I didn't?? I've always liked Christmas up until last year and Halloween I will always love.

"lol" at food snobbery. Most food snobs are miserable people who are unbearable to be around.

I LOVE Applebee's.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Closest one to me, has 52 reviews on TripAdvisor. 20 reviews excellent, only 4 reviews below average. Also love IHOP.
Prefer local eateries, non franchise, whether in town or on the road, but these 2 restaurant chains are most often requested by family and friends.

LOL I would never assume Pig was melting.

Pig, Nope, I never assumed, only wondered.

I don't see any food snobs here. I wouldn't consider Spot or myself one for not caring to go to low end chain restaurants. Do you know what's in pressed meat? Nobody does. https://applebees.pissedconsumer.com/fake-steak-20130720431435.html

When you eat out, the cost of the food is based on the many overhead costs of the restaurant, the profit they want to make and the product. So whether good or bad food, it starts out at a certain dollar amount. Why not pay a little more for something edible?

Funniest thing ever I have never ate at Applebee's is it cheap? Actually not really important I am not driving 40 minutes and wasting $30 in gas to say I went to Applebee's.

Yeah, we were just overnight in TS, so we grabbed what we could

(huh, I wish there had been more of that going on :) ).

the Fire and Ice thing isn't big, but when the weather's cold you're not interested in being outside that long. The neat thing about that little city it is in, is that it too is out in the woods, but someone realized the secret to bringing it back to life was to focus on arts and entertainment (and antique stores), rather than giving away property tax revenue to some business. A&E, and events like the fire and ice or River Fire events (http://www.discoverputnam.com/events) make for a need for a ton of restaurants. Our state capital, meanwhile thinks sports arenas and convention centers might bring along people who want to use restaurants.

and yes, i'm in cow country. Growing up, I hated it b/c everything shut down at 6pm. now i'm old and I love that everything shuts down at 6pm :)

chicken cannibalism is icky, but the c0ckroaches are right up there. My father grew up on his aunt's chicken farm, and as a kid I remember discovering the long-disused coop. WOW, WHAT A STINK! At least cow flop smells like grass.

"the crappy food places are good after work with coworkers"

>>>reminds me of a few places I went, very little atmosphere, but the company was good enough to make it an experience. of course, if I was drunk, even the company might not matter :)

Nestron, the Applebee menus are online, but I think this link works:

Cheap food that should cost more is scary.

Expensive food that should cost less is scarier.

$10 for guacamole made from 2 avocadoes in a chain restaurant?

Oh, you're paying for the ambiance.

What ambiance?
A room full of pretentious people?

Pass.

Having a decent job buys finer things in life.

Apparently you're not talking about those elusive "finer" things like honesty, integrity, compassion, kindness, sincerity, reliability, etc., which don't cost any money.

Mustang, you must not be close enough to a cow pasture, because if you are ever living down wind of one, it would be pretty intolerable. I live on a street that dead-ends and I love it! I was concerned because I was getting new neighbors, but went to meet them the other day and they seemed very nice. On Christmas Eve, they came over to give me Christmas bread that she made.

Fullofpennies, some places are making the guacamole fresh tableside. You get what you pay for. Also, you have to pay for the overhead in the restaurants, you just don't get the food at the grocery store costs. You are paying to have food bought, prepared, served and to be cleaned up after. If you don't enjoy that, then eating out is not right for you. I don't eat out often, but when I do, it is nice to sit down and have someone put something prepared in front of me for a change.

So now you have that elusive person that gives you all of those wonderful characteristics. Do you stare at each other all day, aren't you going to do something? And no, you can't say sex, because you guys aren't up for it 24/7, and women don't only want to see a c0ck in their face. Sometimes they like it to be a plate of chicken cordon bleu with a side of potatoes dauphinoise.

NG and Dan, they're serving up pressed meat at Applebees. That's the lowest of the low. Doesn't matter if it's not what I ordered.

Yes it does. You can get meat that's not pressed, or pressed on purpose. They gave you pressed beef instead of the chicken dish you ordered. You wasted your money by not getting it re-done (and usually a coupon-off your next visit; real angry customers with some luck may get a free dinner pass for a next visit). Pressed is a way that it's prepared -- not the only way there or anywhere else (including some fancy places too). You WANT it to be bad -- admit it. There's plenty of non-chains that are cheap and a little cheaper than Applebees and people who have the anti-chain psychological issue like. The point is -- you don't WANT a chain to be better than the non-chain. The "spirit" of things carries a lot of weight to you, which is why expensive places can jack up their rates Not because of the better food that would costs them $2 for the meat they're serving, but they crank it up even much moreso because of the spirit-fingers "experience"... and to some, they Want the chain (or cheap, except for one cheap place they adore) to Suck, in food quality & taste. :)

Oh, you're paying for the ambiance.

What ambiance?
A room full of pretentious people?

Pass.

Exactly. Some people don't realize that's the real root of everything. It's defense from potentially coming to grips that they're overpaying for the "spirit" of it all. It Makes it better for them, as long as, yeah, it's a good dish. The others SUCK because their ambiance sucks - lol. The spirit of things carrying too much weight -- many of the people who like Corona so much, yet, it fails blind taste tests consistently. Common response I've seen: "NO! I have to drink it from the bottle!"

Thin line between love and hate.

"What ambiance? A room full of pretentious people?"

>>>what I used to label, a "see and be seen" place. Where the hip people go and pay to let other hip people know that they, too are hip.

"Having a decent job buys finer things in life--Apparently you're not talking about those elusive "finer" things like honesty, integrity, compassion, kindness, sincerity, reliability, etc., which don't cost any money."

>>>well, hopefully those are common and found everywhere :) Its true, money does not buy class. You get that from upbringing. As someone who went from broke college student to "a man of some means", I can say there's a large grey medium between "not having it together" and "Throwing money around". Still, we probably end up spending more money to make ourselves happy, than to make others happy. Even when we spoil children or other loved ones, we're probably doing it b/c it feels good :)

"mustang, you must not be close enough to a cow pasture"

>>>not anymore! During the Yuppie era, if you could swing a hammer, you started your own contracting business. We're 30 minutes commute time from the state capital, and back when it was the Insurance Capital of the country, people figured out they could pay thru the nose for property taxes in the towns between us and the capital, or travel another fifteen minutes from us and have a big house and pay less. New England has always had trouble with rocks popping out of the soil (hell on paved driveways, and one of the reasons settlers moved out west, its easier to have a dairy farm than till the soil), so some of the local farmers here got out and let their fields get developed. BUT, the grade school I went to sits on a hill, surrounded by dairy farms.

Eat a school lunch (bleck!), go outside for recess and smell....ugh!

You people are entirely too picky. I grew up in the country, absolutely nothing wrong with a cow pasture, smells like home to me. Hell, I lived on a dairy farm for a year when I was about 12, and I have good memories of that time.

Now if you want to talk about bad smells, go over to Deer Park (east side of Houston) and drive through where all of the refineries are. Now THAT’S a bad smell, I’ll take cow dung every time!

Realistically though, if you're anywhere near a cow pasture, you are outside of the city, and are mostly going to be smelling fresh air, trees, grass, pastureland. I love the night life in the city, but ...

Went to A-b's tonight. Very poor food, seems to have gone down recently. Has anyone here ever worked for an one? Is anything actually cooked in the 'kitchen' or is it all pre-packed and heated?

OTOH, great first date. Who cares about the cr*p food?
