Well the thread is loosely about money and the bonkers state the bankers have created of our money system. I don't agree with a lot of Billy's meanderings but there is some truth in all of it.

Elsewhere people are warning that the problems created by financial service people in the 90's and 2008/9 have not been fixed. After the Wall Street crash of the 1930's the US and British governments stepped in to regulate banks and divorce deposit banking (like what we all use) from investment banking (for investment read speculative). That worked reasonably well but in the 1980s Reagan and Maggie Thatcher dismantled those regulations (US- Steagal-Glass).

There were fortunes to be made and that's what the bankers got hell bent set on doing. That's why you end up with your money in the same bank alongside duff bundled US mortgages. BTW, one reason why there were so many default mortgages was because Bill Clinton was trying to address the fact that black people in the US couldn't get mortgages so banks were encouraged by the government to lend money to those people, which in turn meant a scarcity of property s the price went up, which because people were becoming rich simply by buying a property bought more. Backed by the US government nothing could go wrong, could it? So along comes a smart arse who decides to bundle the non performing loans up into bundles big enough for investment banks to buy. Initially that went badly but eventually everyone piled in and he made a fortune even whilst the market was collapsing. (there was a great film last year about this - forgotten the name).

That brings us to 2008 and the collapse of Lehman Brothers and the domino effect. The banks were bailed out simply because that wall separating savings from speculation had gone and governments could simply not let your money and mine be used to bail out the investment side.

Governments have addressed the problem of bank capital making sure they have enough reserves to weather the next storm. But there is still the likelihood it will all go tits up. Nothing really has been learned. The banks are still run for a small few people and that is the people who work in the banks. If you look at the results for Barclays last week, two thirds of the profits went as bonuses. The rest as dividends but the bank made a loss as a result at lest partially of US fines - go figure.

Obviously nx has tried but he's an utter waste of one's time......

Agree with chap's post a lot...but just saying..

All fiat currencies in history have failed.

Put simply we have a pure debt based global fiat system, the dollar. Which is also the world's reserve currency.

This currency has lost 97-98% of Its value against gold since 1971.

The last 2 or 3% is going to probably happen soon.

Socialism doesn't work. If like me you think that the present welfare state is great, good. But let me state it won't be there in the future for you.

Reading the ragged trousered philanthropists yesterday. Wonderfully powerful book. I identify with so much of it
very little has really changed. Government will not feed Your family. It's been running a ponzi scheme with its accomplices. You and your loved one's need some insurance.

“Capital must protect itself in every possible way, both by combination and legislation. Debts must be collect
ed, mortgages foreclosed as rapidly as possible.

“When, through process of law, the common people lose their homes, they will become more docile and more easily governed through the strong arm of the government applied by a central power of wealth under leading financiers.

“These truths are well known among our principal men, who are now engaged in forming an imperialism to govern the world. By dividing the voter through the political party system, we can get them to expend their energies in fighting for questions of no importance.

“It is thus, by discrete action, we can secure for ourselves that which has been so well planned and so successfully accomplished.”

Montagu Norman, Governor of The Bank Of England, addressing the United States Bankers’ Association, NYC 1924

We all know that though don’t we? We’re being conned, controlled, played and ripped off all our lives. There is nothing anyone can do about it other than enjoy what little they let us keep.

I quite like the idea of living in a van, there’s a lot of people doing exactly that and post blogs online, a fair few women too.

Do not start trying to take the pee, Billy. Pick on someone else.
You do not like my arguments against money (the promise to pay) but you fail to recognise I just may be right.
Are you scared of that? I wonder why you are so staunch on a dating forum... does it make you more attractive or more single to harp on about your penache for saving and accumulating?

edit... what about NX? still awaiting a response there

They’re actually fairly reliable if you can live with something that’s had 40+ years for of welding, patching and painting. We call them resin rockets because they are so full of filler. You’ll be in the bodyshop annually for minor cosmetics if you want to keep it looking presentable.

You’d be better off letting your head rule your heart and going for a T4 or a T5, added bonus is they’ll do more than 30mph uphill.

I don't get it. I have friends who drool and dribble over VW campers. I saw one advertised recently which was an original, it even still had the original weld dots in the roof - split screen too. But then they admitted that to bring it up to date and make it do more than fart up and down the place, they'd replaced the engine and gearbox with something to get it over the 40mph limit of the original. Power steering to help it around corners and to make it more comfortable had replaced the seats installing swivel front seats, new heating, rears seats / bed, modern cooking kit and a generator. Repainted in a rocking new colour too. But the roof weld was still original. Price 80 thousand and something.

Have you ever driven an original one. I'm sure at the time they were fantastic. Along with a gang of friend we travelled around Austria for a few weeks back in 71 but even then I thought they were awful. I mean, being blown off by a 2CV is embarrassing. Oh well, rant over. If you've a rusty old heap of one in the back garden, hang on to it, they're more valuable than Billy's Gold.

so here's a bit about the Bretton Woods system form Wiki

"However, increased government intervention in domestic economy brought with it isolationist sentiment that had a profoundly negative effect on international economics. The priority of national goals, independent national action in the interwar period, and the failure to perceive that those national goals could not be realized without some form of international collaboration—all resulted in "beggar-thy-neighbor" policies such as high tariffs, competitive devaluations that contributed to the breakdown of the gold-based international monetary system, domestic political instability, and international war.

The lesson learned was, as the principal architect of the Bretton Woods system New Dealer Harry Dexter White put it:

the absence of a high degree of economic collaboration among the leading nations will … inevitably result in economic warfare that will be but the prelude and instigator of military warfare on an even vaster scale."

And that's at least part of the problem in a nutshell. Trumps idea that trade wars are a good thing because America will win is just bonkers. Just as the Germans are trying to win in Europe and the Chinese have been doing for years with their currency manipulation.

Something has to give somewhere especially when the other countries involved are heavily armed. There were all sorts of causes but the Versaille treaty dumped all the financial liability for WW1 on Germany allowing Hitler to come to power. We've a few idiots apart from trump in power now who also believe in might is right.

I did a few little jobs on an old splitty for a mate who was restoring it, he managed to flog it to VW uk (it really was THAT good) and they used it in this advert (it's the first one in the lock up with the old bloke) and some other promo stuff, as far as i know nowadays it just sits in air conditioned storage with a load of other old VW's, shame really.

I know they paid him 35k for it in 2008/2009, seems cheap now.

I'd still prefer a T5

Ok no vw for me. I don’t know any mechanics, and I really couldn’t see me taking the time to nurture a vehicle.
It’s just one of my dreams, like owning a motorbike and travelling.

I have friends who drool and dribble over VW campers.

Only happens to me when I’m sleeping with my mouth open catching spiders :)

Edit....god damnit kirky.....now I’ve seen that 2nd clip I really really want one again

Well the inter-war monetary system was the gold exchange standard that Keynes labelled quite soon after its inception a barbarous relic . And which Churchill took us onto at the pre- world war one sterling rate which was highly deflationary because of all the money printing to pay for the war and this led to an awfully poor time for the British economy in the 20s ..the Jarrow March etc. .Churchill called it his greatest mistake.

Free trade arguments were superbly put by David Ricardo and based on English and Portuguese trade. No problem but without the the right monetary system it doesn't work.

Triffin's prediction..Bretton woods 1944 the dollar was made the world's reserve currency . This was a mistake pointed out years ago. Like all economic nonsense its unwi nd is likely to be painful and we will move to the IMF's sdr in the coming years. That's the globalist plan.It still looks like the American body politic is in denial over the dollar problem. In the meantime things will be unpleasant.

I really must run. ...if possible...

Bitcoin - how many to buy VeeDub
Posted: 3/3/2018 4:40:16 AM
Rxy, I tried, honestly I did.

As stated elsewhere I made a profit of 30p on the lottery lat night. Not quite enough to buy the Dub outright but you are welcome to all of it towards your Dub savings fun. I feel that if everyone else chipped in a similar amount, you could possibly buy your own lottery ticket?
