" I have never heard anyone say "As soon as I saw his profile picture, I knew he was the one that I'm going to marry." "

That's because it's much, MUCH easier to gauge the bulge in a man's pants in person.

At the children' tables what did I see? A bunch of kids glued to their phones, so I went around and asked them all if they could turn them off for an hour. OP- I see that basic same thing happening with dating today. Socializing online is easy, as many find the internet a place to connect. However interpersonal "live" connections are becoming more difficult because of it.

I saw the same dynamic at a New Year's party. Cousins who would always talk and play with each other were now glued to phones, sitting two feet apart. I ask them to talk to each other NOW & TOGETHER so everyone could get the latest news, instead of waiting to read about it in a news feed that might not get to you for days. Nah - they kept staring at their phones.

Social Media online is easy because you don't have to show your face, you can hide behind an icon or a silly username. If you don't like what someone says, you can BLOCK them. It's very alluring, because in time, you can craft a nano-cosm of opinions/videos/memes that are closely attuned to your preferences and loves. Why listen to a boring story from Uncle Joe when you can get newsfeeds about all the "cool" stuff in life that you like?

The tough thing for people is that you have to put that stuff DOWN when you go dating. You need to pay attention and see how you connect to another person, who is not a 24/7 entertainment machine designed to make you laugh and take you as a +1 to all the cool parties. Very challenging. How much will people cocoon themselves before a social event is a rarity? Will our society change so much so that talking to a person in public without having a social media connect be considered rude and inappropriate?

Woman: "Officer! That man public-posted a HELLO to me and he's not on my friends list!"
Officer: "I'm sorry, you must log-in and create a profile to use Metro Police Services(tm). Have you tried our demo?"

I'm surprised that no one has invented a device that can send out a frequency that jams the signal to cell phones within a specified range, making them inoperable for the time being. I'm sure some employers would love to stop their workers from always checking their cell phones while on the job. Especially if the job involves operating machinery. Telling workers and giving them warnings to not use their cell phone while on the job is not enough of a deterrent to the addicted cell-head. Cell/Smart phone addiction is on par with alcoholism or drug addiction.

There is a device called "cell phone jammer or blocker".

It is a violation of federal law for citizens to use a cell jammer or similar devices that intentionally block, jam, or interfere with authorized radio communications such as cell phones, police radar, GPS, and Wi-Fi.

Casinos in Las Vegas have very thick walls, which dampen cell phone signals. They don't want you to use cell phones because they could be used to cheat at poker, the sports book, or other games like blackjack, where card counting apps could be used.

^^^They also don't want you finding your car, because you might leave and not come back. So they make you park a mile away.

I know this thread was from 2 months back, but I couldn't help it.

The subject line just made me giggle.

Frankly, I prefer women with:
- conditioned hair
- luxury sized boobs
- a pathological fear of beets
- power windows
- 15 year drivetrain warranty
- deluxe floormats...

I . . . uh, sorry, that was funnier in my head than it looks now that I've typed it all out.

Side note: upon meeting a girlfriend of mine, back in my college days, my mom looked her squarely in the eye and said: "No warranties, as-is. Also, no returns!" :D

Another friend of mine, trying to hook me up, said "Dude, it'll be no problem. I'll take you out there, and say 'boy for sale!' and it'll totally work!"

My response: "Uh, is this legal, man?"

(ok, so I stole that from The Simpsons. I'd say "sue me," but only Matt Groening can do that)

they just send out a series of grunts like Hi, Hello, Hey There or Send Photo and don’t bother to converse about themselves or what they have to offer

I'm on Bumble ( the app where WOMEN message first ) and this is EXACTLY the kind of messages I get from women. Less than 6 words, low-effort introductions.

IMHO - Isn't this pretty much the same thing you'd get if a stranger approached you at a bar or a club? So why the rant?

In the old days, a woman would drop her hanky in front of a man to indicate she wanted some dialogue/flirtation.

The more things change, the more things stay the same.

I have had some luck on Tinder and Bumble, but Ok*Cupid and AM remain my favorites.

What surprises me the most about Tinder and Bumble are the profiles with no pictures, or only a picture of a sunset or a dog or something other than the woman. With basically no profile, and no words, everything is on the picture, and you have no picture, so why are you there?

I wonder if it's a an experiment of some kind? Oh, well, swipe left, move along, nothing to see here.

Really? I've never heard anyone have any luck on that site. I tried it once for about an hour, I was overwhelmed with way too young men and those who wanted a hook up right away. Good on you though, maybe its just the location.

I know she is gone. (Unless she created a new profile.) But there has to be a mutual match on Tinder for these men to contact you. If you didn't want attention from younger men, then change the age settings so younger men won't show up on your search results.

I had some matches on Tinder and Bumble. But most of my matches wouldn't contact me or they will do the disappearing act after a few emails. I think some people joined Tinder and Bumble for an ego boost. Just to see how many people from the opposite gender found them attractive. Not that much different than POF in that regard.

To answer the original question, women use POF as a car catalog as well. If he doesn't exactly match a long list of requirements. Such as being 1-2 inches under a certain height, 1-2 years outside her age range, doesn't have a college degree etc, women often won't be interested.

Tinder and Bumble sounds like a boutique shop. As for the picky people who want a perfect partner (there's some alliteration), chance are whoever gets them, is stuck with a PITA for a date. Like a boss who wants perfection. Unless they somehow pull off a perfect pairing, in which case...they found the miracle paradise we all say we want.

I think there exists a "just sampling" ego-boost experience for some, but I think the main reason for quick-chat-and-gone is that there's cuter guys on the docket. An Average Jane can be a Pretty Penny walking into it. Ego-boost-only wouldn't be required for her to bark up some other, more appetizing trees.

But, as marketing has proven -- give someone too many options in front of them of the same brand to taste-test, they are Less likely to buy.
