Love the shootout but keep it for the regular season only. It's great to see the creativity of the skill players.
I don't want to go back to the days when teams had 20 ties on their record.

Damn Leafs... They are going to get Maurice and Fergie Jr fired.
Wow... do they look bad!
And Avery is killing them.

Perhaps based on Detroit's recent playoff record. Haven't they lost to the eighth seed in the opening round two of the past three playoffs?
Lets look at the Western Confrence Play off records.
If you award 1 pt for each round of the playoffs and an extra point for winning the Cup here are the results.
Aneheim 5 pts
Aneheim 8 pts
San Jose 7 pts
Detroit 6 pts
Colorado 6 pts
Aneheim 12 pts
Detroit 12 pts
San Jose 9 pts
Colorado 8 pts
Detroit 27 pts
Colorado 23 pts
Dallas 19 pts
Aneheim 15 pts
This myth about Detroit being a poor playoff team has been busted!

I chose those for separation not manipulation but here are the others.
Anaheim 8 pts
Detroit 4 pts
Edmonton 4 pts
San Jose 4 pts
Aneheim 12 pts
Detroit 7 pts
San Jose 7 pts
Gee 2nd place in both. What a terrible playoff team the Wings are.
I accept your apology on behalf of the 2008 Stanly Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings.

Once again the Presidents Trophy will mean squat come playoff time and when the REAL season begins. Regular season champs does not guarantee anything come playoff time.
Pucky you are a genius. I never would have thunk that.
Vancouver's current team and past history do not indicate they have the ability to make a run at the cup. They also have the same achilies heal as Detroit ...lack of Canadian leadership.
San Jose and Aneheim are the two teams I fear most.

looks like the Wings are in for a possible first round loss again. They are going to have to face the Ducks, Flames, Hawks or Blue's.
Before you knock Chicago (remember Savard has that team running well, with young stars like Towes and Kane) and ST.Louis (this team has completely changed as well with Kariya and company so they are not a walk through either.
LOL Pucky any other teams you think they might face in the first round.
The Wings have been eliminated twice in the first round in the last 5 seasons.
Dallas has also been eliminated twice in the 1st round.
Calgary has also been eliminated twice in the 1st round and missed the playoffs twice.
Vancouver eliminated twice in the 1st round.
St. Louis when the make the playoffs both times went out in the first round.
Chicago ...won't make the playoffs.
The facts are the facts... Detroit's playoff record while not as good as its regular season record is still as good as anyones in the Western Confrence.
It's tough being the best!

True, yes they are Mighty but can they do it again? That is the question. What was the last team to do it back to back...hmmm...now don't tell me...oh yeah...Detroit Red Wings!

Haha...fond memories, Monsieur Pundit! I bought my scalped ticket online and flew back to Edmonton for the game... and boy o boy, was I unprepared for that weather. I remember buying tons of beer and those Campbell Soup Heritage Classic commemorative bottles full of hot chicken noodle soup to stay warm. What a day! I remember wondering what Gretzky's daughter (raised in balmy LA) must have thought as she sang out there in that arctic weather...lol. Anyway, I would have rioted if they cancelled the second game because we suffered through hell and back just to make it through the first. There were times where I wasn't sure that I was going to make it, but I toughed it out...so I can imagine that there would have been some seriously, SERIOUSLY upset fans. Good on Bettman! I never knew about the potential for cancellation, but that just adds to the legend of that game.
PS. If memory serves me well, it warmed up within a day or two of the Classic, n'est pas??

I think they were tied over the last two seasons.

I was talking about the Flames/Nucks series. They have tied over the last two seasons that they've faced each other. And I know what you mean about the Nucks broadcasts because I have to put up with it all the time. If you want to see real homers, then listen to these guys. You'd think they were destined to win the cup every year the way these guys spin things. That's all we see out here on the coast...unfortunately! Thank god for Centre Ice and NHL radio!!!

Happy New Years, everyone. As for the outdoor hockey game, they were playing probably at 75 percent of their capability because of the conditions, but kudos for the fans for showing up in droves.
Also, it is true that there are homers in every city. If you go to any fan forum, they accuse every other team's commentators of being homers. I have to admit though...the Nucks guys are among the worst.

Canada has a very young team this year. They have the most eligable returnplayers for next year. They are having trouble scoring and in order to beat the US they will need some one other than just Taveres to csore.
This game is just a semi, this is the Gold medal game. The winner will win the Tourney.

Yup, that was pretty crappy of Downie. I loved how he justified his actions: "That's just what I do" Starting to really dislike the Flyers because of the uber-goon, Hatcher, and now this Downie guy.

Yup, the Leafs actually deserved a better fate tonight. They outshot the Flyers by a 2-1 margin, but you're right about the special teams and the weak D are killing them. Funny you mentioned White...I think I noticed him taking dumb penalties and being weak on the puck tonight as well. It's almost painful to watch Leafs games these days because they are actually trying, but it seems to be a wasted effort.
