I can play piano and guitar and can read music but the best stuff is usually played from ear and improvisation so your nan has the best way.

Do you think musical instrument playing is a plus or minus in a date/relationship situation. My Gu-Zheng, in its case, could only fit in the front passenger seat of my previous car. Haven't tried it in the new car yet.

At 40, I'll be picking up on cello. It's never too late.

A Nottingham (lace) band. . I used to play the clarinet but hated it. I was the only boy in the school recorder group (what does that tell you) and can still play almost any tune on that, my favourite being Casta Diva from Norma. :-) I have to say the treble saxophone should be renamed the sexophone as i am sure the above poster can testify. . . Grr woof. . (not the poster the sax. . . )

I played the violin rather seriously for about 12 years. Haven't really looked at it for about 10 years. I'd join up :)

Zenndy, I'm jealous. After watching the film Local Hero I just had to learn to play the theme tune "Going Home". I just about managed half of it but I can't play by ear amd there's no music I can find for it.

I've got a tenor sax but haven't picked it up in years, not so easy living in a terrace house. But if I had the music for "Going Home" I would be tempted to find somewhere to play.

I've tried and tried but just find the fingering too difficult.

Really? LOL

I used to play the clarinet and the piano. I want to be able to play the piano like I used to when I was doing my a-levels, Michael Nymans score to the film The Piano was always my favourite.

Where do you get stuck on the Michael Nymans, I always find it gets easier as it progresses but then that's just me. I like to improvise that song anyway.

No I didn't ever get stuck with it, I no longer have the strength in my fingers to play as I used to, practice is the only remedy to get it back which I don't have the time or the privacy for just now.

vvvv wtf? Shut it, who asked you anyway.

I've often been accused of blowing my own trumpet but since I haven't actually got one, I've stuck to drums, percusion and the odd foray into keyboards.

Thanks but that's for piano. I have no musical training nor understanding so can't transcribe that for a sax.

It's in D major but tenor sax plays an octave and a major second lower than the written pitch, so you'd need to transpose it an octave and a major second higher than the piano pitch to sound in concert pitch D major. I think that means the concert D root note for the tenor sax is C.

OOOoerr! Icarusi. Daver said he had no musical understanding so I doubt very much if he followed any of that - I certainly didn't! It's all digital - if he bought it, maybe you could transpose it for him??....

There's nothing to stop a solo transposing instrument playing directly from a piano score, it'll sound ok. It only needs to be tranposed if playing with other instruments, or along with the record in the correct key.
