I like the Trek novels too. Good reading. I especially like Peter David and Keith R. A. DeCandido. Those books are so good I sometimes find myself unable to put them down!

Count me as a geeky designer! I look forward to the day I pull out my Alienware computer and start showing clients what a room can look like on the computer.

I have the IKS Gorkon series to begin with, and I have several others floating around. I like Keith alot. DC Fontana and Diane Carey are also awesome writers. I tried to message ya but you were too far away. Drop me a line, we could talk more.

Those who haven't read a Trek novel don't know what they are missing

I concur, I'm not a nerd, (the truth is that I don't know what it means, and also noticed that there are some conflict regarding the definition of this term) but I believe that what you describe is correct.

What is call "reality" is what we agree upon. If the majority of the people agree that you are a loser because you are part of a smaller group, you'll be a "loser", yet because the biggest part of the society thinks so, doesn't mean they are right. Because reality is what it is *"AS IS"*
Whether we like it or not, whether we understand it or not, whether we are -or not- able to see it as it is.
There was a time where the majority of the people thought that earth was flat, yet one person showed that the "majority" was wrong, I'm sure you can think of other examples.

And when you look at the final product, it is desirable. I mean, everybody (or most people) would like to be Bill Gates, but (I think) very few are able to realize that he was one of those that many call "losers", because he was probably most of the time studying, and I don't think he was "hanging out" in bars or clubs etc, but probably investing as much time as he could studying in order to develop his Ideas, and THAT is what got him where he is.

Regarding "social skills", this is a problem that many people have, no necessarily nerds, I've seen people with this problem in different areas of society, in every part of the world I've been.
Personally I believe that the way to handle it is in gradient, one step at the time, just like when we learn anything else, you don't read a book about piloting a plain and then jump on a plane and try to fly it. Is not how it works. I'm sure you are aware of it, and know why I'm clarifying this.

Anyhow, I hope you find a way like you say to solve this problem, I'm sure that some of you will come up with the right answer, as I see it you are already doing something about it.
Best wishes everybody!

I'm sick of people comparing nerds to Bill Gates. Yeah, we nerds have ambitions to become billionaires. We always think that our next project is the best thing that ever roamed the internet. But the truth is, most of the nerds are not going to be the next Bill Gates. Some of us will probably be a computer programmer making decent money, living in a fairly decent house in an upper middle class neighbourhood. Basically, getting our degrees worth the effort.

But I feel a little better now that I know there are other guys like me. I only had two dates in my 24 years of my life, once when I was 21, and once when I was 23. So, my next date is just around the corner, in year 2007! Hooray!

Of course they do!
I would even go so far as to say that the more beautiful a woman is, the more likely it is that she will prefer a nerd with money . (its a chick thing) Keep your head up!

Fixed.

No, nerds do not have girlfriends.

They have harems of gorgeous super models who cater to their every whim and fight over who gets to pleasure him next, but no, I wouldn't call them "girlfriends."

This nerdette does not have a boyfriend, at this writing. I am a nerdette of sorts because I love Star Trek and am an **Old School** Gamer. I like the classic games that are played in arcades. Games are meant to be 25 cents per play! Plunk those quarters

And, for the love of meatballs, stop playing WoW.

Them's fightin' woids!

Actually, there's nothing at all wrong with being a "nerd." Heck, I often say to people that I'm a nerd and proud of it. I really am. I have a master's degree, am a professional scientist, am a member of Mensa. You get the picture.

It's just a matter of being true to yourself and liking yourself exactly the way you are. There's no shortage of women who are actually attracted to nerdy guys, ya know.

OP mediamake is right; I can't count how many profiles say ,"I'm a nerd looking for a nerd". totally cool nowadays;

I think the internet has created a lot of nerds; very smart people that are socially lacking in a lot of confidence and savvy. Many hide behind computer screens and text messages instead of getting out their and living.

Just be yourself and get out there and meet people; so many want Mr. or Miss right to come out of their computer screen or knock on their door with a pizza saying,"where have you been all my life".

It's amazing; I dont know how people had sex, met, got married and had children without texting and the internet; lol; of course I'm being extremely sarcastic.

Get out of the house and meet people; it's really not hard if you try.

Went out with 8 girls since what?

Dude, if you are a Nerd, learn math.

And math is about numbers, probability, outcome.

Do you understand this sh it? Or you are going to hide under your own insecurities and fear or rejection.

Go out there and learn to get rejected. Go contact 100 women, all with totally different messages.

Go even hit on a girl with the most ridiculous of lines and see what happens. Get it out of your system and you will realize that you limiting yourself, it's all in your head.

Nerdy girls are so attractive!! Drooool.............

oh and yeah, these so called "Nerds" who claim they have girlfriends.... there isn't a solid way to find out unless you know them or meet them in person. But the idea isn't totally false either... I've seen many guys who look or seem.. "nerdy" yet have very beautiful girlfriends. I for one am jealous of them, hahah....

HAHAHAHAH ....

Nerds don't have sht! They come here and post "nice guy" threads, that's all they got. Jeeez!
Bill gates...well not every nerd becomes Bill gates, nor becomes successful. Most get stuck in 9/5 jobs forever and usually have serious social problems.

Nerds have gfs ..... oh pleassseee...pfft !
All they have is the virtual porn and vaseline.... bah!

Some nerds do, most don't. No matter what you may have heard, the women who are are willing to even consider investing in a nerd are still in the minority. Never mind all the studies that show that nerds are actually physically active, generally smarter, less violent, more caring, make better lovers and better fathers because there are still way too many negative social stereotypes working against nerds for them to even matter.

Video games still aren't recognized as respectable medium or a legitimate form of entertainment by mainstream media, fiction is considered weak escapism by the those with no imagination and intellectuality is often demonized to adhere for the lowest common denominators. The average girl was raised under these effects and is now very much set in her ways. They have different priorities and will avoid all things nerd like the plague without even thinking twice about it.

I'm Irish American, my parents are both Irish. I speak some Gaelic, my great grandfather was a Seachai back in Ireland. That's Gaelic for storyteller. This was in the days before tape recorders in the 1930s and 1940s. He's famous over there, the county council made a stone carving of him I have yet to see in person, so I'm the 3rd generation of that.

I tend to read a lot, so much so that I memorized my NYPL library card number. I'm currently reading The Forgotten Man, it's interesting so far.

I must be a nerd, cause I understand this stuff. My one regret is that my current wireless router doesn't do WPA2.

For 20 years I've built my own computers, I've programmed using DIP switches, built my own model rokets (35-40 years ago), and have shelves filled with C++, PERL, and JAVA books. I've studied, read, and written in Russian, use to be able to bore you to tears about the Krebs-Citric acid cycle, did my thesis on bio-electric-photometric sensors, and believe solder is a programming language (inside joke).

I have 4 functional computers around my house (only use three currently) and my main box has 2.4 TB of memory available internally and another couple externally. Each computer has 2 or 3 different operating systems. I remember, fondly, spending all nighters playing early versions of Civ, Wolfenstein 3D (mein leben), and Doom.

I am currently in mid stride wiring my house for Gigabit ethernet using Cat 5 and Cat 6 cable and putting in enough quad shielded RJ6 coax for a closed circuit network. Oh yeah, fun times.

I thought pocket protectors were an article of clothing.

My favorite genre is Sci-Fi. I have over a 1000 sci-fi paperbacks, somewhere around half are read. Favorite authors are Tim Zahn, Niven, Perry, and others.

I've earned my nerd bona fides.

Oh, yeah, and I did have girl friends.

You seem to think being a nerd is a good thing. Listing IQ and academic accomplishment. Being a nerd means you have poor social skills and not many friends.

And yea, people with bad social skills and not many friends can still get girlfriends. They usually dress up like Spock and go to star trek conventions together.

Nerds do fine as long as they are confident nerds. I've seen some confident average looking nerds with smoking hot girlfriends.

I live with a nerd. So what's that make me- sensitive. Ummm

No.

Makes me the nerds girlfriend.

I'm still "pain in the ass - tell everyone to fcck off" me.

I'm far from sensitive or laid back.

I just happen to love a guy who has a replica of the starship enterprise
In our china cabinet.

Yeah yeah yeah, and at the end of the day nerds come last anyway no matter what the women post here.

Anybody who calls himself "nerd" is just someone who decided one day that since he sucks with women, barely has any friends and likes to collect stamps, that's he's smarter than everybody else and therefore labels himself "nerd" as an excuse. As for IQ tests, I believe that a lot of people feed off of that for the rest of their lives and seriously think that the mind is so simple that any test in the world would measure intelligence as if given by God himself on a stone tablet.
