Gainesville Florida - it is dank and stinks to high heaven in some parts. 8th highest impoverished city in USA. Drunken students from UF, copulating in doorways, crapping in alleys behind churches, wandering into the streets. The business and homeowners are all hateful creeps, probably because of the stupid drunkard students. All the traffic of a big city with all the poverty and lack of employment and culture of a backwoods territory.

Egypt. Absolutely horrible vacation. If you ever go 1 day to see the pyramids & museum. If you have to go to Luxor only make that a day as well. You will get insanely harassed for Bagshish(Tip). If you take a bus it is entirely possible the driver will stop mid-trip and refuse to continue until everyone tips him. It happened to me on the trip from Hurghada to Cairo. If you find yourself over night in Luxor, check out the English Pub there. It was the only good time I had in Egypt besides the awe in seeing the Giza Pyramids. If you get offered a package to go and see the Memphis pyramids, eh, nothing special. And Elvis never lived in them ;-)

Also if you are here, don't bother with hostels or doing it cheap. If you cant afford the Nile Hilton & a tour to Giza definitely don't come. It is not worth it. The only itinerary I would grudgingly recommend: cab to Hilton from airport, stay in Hilton until Giza Tour, return to Hilton after Giza Tour. Stay in Hilton until cab comes to take you back to the airport.

1 day, GTFO. I hear Alexandria and Sharm El Sheikh are better, but I didn't get a chance to go as I was busy for kicking myself in the arse for wasting my vacation.

Also do not fall for the "come upstairs and see the picture of my father with Muhammad Ali" con. You will get guilt tripped into buying something at best.

The stupid shi.t you can think of... they do it in Korea. Sewer smell all over the city.
And the worst is racism. What they see on TV, is "reality". Whites are doctors, lawyers, execs, and Blacks are gangsters, rapists, theives. They have a status level for Asians.... they cry about Japan. And on the map they don't recoginze the Sea of Japan.

Homeless kids in streets and train stations. Nearly mugged across the street from the palace. The ppl try to shake you right hand and dig in your pockets with their left. Dogs everywhere.

Middle East:
Saudi Arabia
-- they throw trash out the window, on the highway!
NASCAR style tailgating at 80-90 MPH
and.... saw a driver on the highway, on a laptop!

I agree......Gary, Indiana....terrible,depressing city. We had to detour through the city last September due to the heavy rains and the I-94 was closed. Even the populace in the city looked depressed.

My very own town Penticton...
Not becauce it's beautiful, warn and thousands of people vacation here.
It's cuz we are a small town of 30,000 people that grows to 130,000 in summer, too hectic.
But if I was a visitor what a kick azz town.

Never traveled but what a great thread as to "not where to go"

Camden, NJ - Detroit, MI - Gary, IN - Chicago, IL - Los Angeles, CA - Boston, MA - Philadelphia, PA - Flint, MI - Cleveland, OH - Newark, NJ - Washington, DC - Charlotte, NC - Miami, FL .. all horrible cities. I've been to all of them for work. There's a laundry list... oh yeah, and Memphis, TN and Nashville, TN .. gang warzones. And can't forget Atlanta, GA. One of the most violent cities in the world.

However, nothing is as bad as Baltimore, MD. The armpit of the East Coast. You can't walk 10 feet without being accosted by a panhandler. In the 6 collective months I spent there for work, I had one hotel room broken into, two rental cars vandalized, and fought off an attempted mugging right in the Inner Harbor (The "tourist" area). But damn if they don't have some amazing seafood.

I love Turkey and Egypt! My God who could hate Turkey. I have been 3 times and travelled all over alone. The Turks are so open, honest and friendly. I love the food and people in Egypt as well.

I think Prague is overrated. Worst food on earth. Mexico is a hell hole. Utah is a truly dreadful place. Although they have the most beautiful national parks. Spain has horrible food and to many picky pockets. Italy is also a nation of thieves and their pizza sucks.

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It took me a week to get out of there. We had to pay off people so we could board a plane. There are lots of pay offs there very corrupt. You couldn't wear jewelry because people would cut off your fingers to get it. There are safes in the room for valuables. A guy in our group got beat up leaving the hotel at night. They told us not to leave the hotel. I couldn't wait to get out of there.

I would have to say Marseille in the south of France. Other than the coastal ports that are very beautiful and the historical monuments. That's the only good thing I have to say about Marseille. This city is not a safe place for tourists. There is an extreme amount of poverty, theft, other related crimes in this city. It's overrun by people from Morocco, South Africa, and other South counrties. I was told never to walk the streets at night, even during the day. Many area's are not safe or walk around in. Taking the subways at night the same. Was there once in my life. I will never travel back ever again.

Loads of English people go there on holiday (which I don't like because why would I go on holiday to see people I normally see?)
Of course they do - Just like you they either booked on a UK travel website or went into a travel agency and picked up an English Tour Operators brochure and booked Gambia just as you did.

If you are English and do not want to run into more English people in resort then do not book a holiday in one of the popular destinations frequented by Brits.

Its very easy to google Gambia on the net and find smaller resorts outside Kololi Beach, Banjul Senegambia etc that have a more diverse mix of holiday makers. You will have to book direct and arrange your own transfers but then if you want to escape commercialisation and over developed tourism you have to pay the price.

I have been in 55 countries and Papua New Guinea is by far the most dangerous place. The hotel grounds was surrounded by razor wire and armed guards at every entrance. Local escorts had to be with you every moment to secure your safety. When hiking the Kokoda Trail, all personal items had to be in your tent at night or they would be stolen. The guards were necessary at night to assure our safety. The 10 days hike was amazing but I would never return to the country.

Eritrea...incredibly poor, beggars everywhere. Everyone looked malnourished. Very depressing place. Mombassa Kenya places a close second for it's violence and crime.

Ballaratt, Phillip Island, Great Ocean Road...
Excellent transport infratructure, great choice of food from most cultures, great club scene - Aussies by their nature are welcoming people.

What did you do ? Stay one night in a back packers ??

Melbourne's a great place and Victoria has a hell of a lot of to see - Soverign Hill the site of the gold miners rebellion (The Eureka Stockade)

Most Disapointing? The Great Salt Lake- Smelled like low tide on steroids and while walking along the shore we heard a crunching sound and looked down to see that we were walking on seagull carcases.

Detroit-Windsor, nothing really to see except for the Ford museum and they charge you $30 just to visit the damn place. There are only liquor stores and prostitutes everywhere. Road condition was horrible too, nothing really to see.

Fenghuang City, China. Greatly exaggerated place with not much scenery, food was crappy, street vendors everywhere hawking services and goods. The water was smelly due to people doing laundry, etc.

Toronto - Other than the Lake Ontario and the CN tower, the city is just one big urban sprawl spread out miles and miles.

Halifax - Smelly harbor, small city with not much of anything there. No need to visit a second time cause there is nothing to see there.

Algonquin Park - nothing really to see, most of the park is like abandoned and really nothing to see.

Not the worst but still bad,boring a trip to Las Vegas.So much
smoking,drinking,...ppl handingout um..xesual..papers to clubs or stuff.
and gambling abound an such headaches from the lights an its tacky buildings an..blah not a very good family trip but it was still ok. the natural side was there were cute lil stores M&M Store for example.but wasnt exactly a bad trip but it wasnt very swell either
its a toss up.
but its natural beauty again is amazing.go farther from its city an you can see the desert,experience the dark night truly:pitch black an see the milkyway an others.That was worth the trip to get to L.V.though too the city had its charms here an there so even its bright artificial lights had something alittle nice to it.
