Cover better than original? (Boys of Summer)Page 5 of 5    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
I don't know how many of you are familiar with Brian Ferry and Roxy Music. They had a hit with "More Than This" This song was also covered by 10,000 maniacs, I think I prefer their version. I do however, listen to both versions on occasion.

Other good covers are Gwyneth Paltrow/Huey Lewis version of a Smokey Robinson hit "Cruising" and Sex Pistols version of Sinatra's "My Way" :)

tortoise and bonnie "prince" billy - daniel(orig. elton john)
sonic youth - superstar (orig. the carpenters)
miles davis - guinevere (orig. Crosby, Stills and Nash)
elliott smith - thirteen (orig. Big Star)

Sufjan Stevens' version of Free Man in Paris is really good but not quite as good as Joni's.

Gotta Get you Into My Life by EW&F, as stated by a previous poster, excellent call...

Fugees, Killing Me Softly, oh they do this so well.

Lady Marmalade, by Pink, L'il Kim, Christine A and another girl (ooo can't remember her name...)

And of course, All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix on Ladyland and Peter Gunn on War Heroes, no more needs be said.

Cheers, Raven

I agree about The Sundays doing "Wild Horses". Catherine Wheeler's voice alone gets it done.

I also agree that Hendrix has done the best "All Along The Watchtower".

Here are some more (some don't actually beat the original but at least give them a good go):

The Cardigans covering "Iron Man" (Black Sabbath) - hilariously laid back and cool.
Devo covering "Satisfaction" (The Rolling Stones) - another funny take on a legendary song, really stands on its own.
Primus covering "Tippy Toes" (The Meters) - actually, the whole Miscellaneous Debris e.p. consists of covers that are fantastic takes on the originals.
The Pixies covering "Head On" (The Jesus and Mary Chain) - I love the guitar sound on this one. It gives the song a more emotionally raw sound.
Daniel Ash covering "Day Tripper" (The Beatles) - I know, I know, but it IS very good, and very trippy.
The White Stripes covering "Your Southern Can Is Mine" (Blind Willie McTell) - just amazed they pulled it off.

But the Lifetime Achievement Award in this field has to go to Weird Al. His parodies regularly top the originals, at least in entertainment value.

Motley Crue covered Brownsville Station's, "Smokin' In the Boys Room" (don't like either version because I don't care for the song) and Gene Simmons' cover of the Prodigy's, "Firestarter" (which I love) SUCKS.

Don Henley for sure

These were excellent and frequently better than the originals
Metallica - Turn the Page , Bob Seger
Aretha Franklin's version of Respect by Otis Redding
Van Halen's rendition of Dancing in the streets and You Really Got Me
Garth Brooks - Shameless

While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Jeff Healey, love that version
David Bowie - China Girl by Iggy Pop
The Talking Heads-Take Me To The River, Al Green
The Beatles,Twist and Shout by The Isley Brothers
Eric Clapton, I shot the Sherrif - by Bob Marley
The Cowboy Junkies, Sweet Jane-Lou Reed
UB40's, Red Red Wine - Neil Diamond
The Black Crowes, Hard to Handle - by Otis Redding
Eric Clapton, Cocaine - by JJ Cale
Soft Cell, Tainted Love - Gloria Jones
Cream, Crossroads by Robert Johnson
Cheap Trick, Ain't That A Shame

I also really liked "Shout" by Disturbed, but they never should have tried Phil Collins...ick

Don Henley's version is 100 times better than the Ataris.

The Hooters (All You Zombies, And We Danced, Day By Day) did a really good cover of 'The Boys Of Summer' on their latest CD.

---

Some really good (maybe not so well known) covers:
Damnations Tx. - Copper Kettle (Bob Dylan)
The Flatirons - Crazy Train (Ozzy)

Great covers album/CD:
Dead Ringer Band - Hopeville

But now I'm being driven nuts because I can't think of who originally sang "Last Kiss" and who later put out "If You Can Read My Mind" and anyone who can fill the blanks in, it's much appreciated.

J. Frank Wilson & the Cavaliers did the original "Last Kiss"

Haven't heard the Lightfoot cover.

Actually in the early 2000 that same song got covered again but in a dance version and sang by a female don't remember name off the top of my head but I think that is the best verison of the Boys of Summer.
