I sit tonight needing shelter...

I'm leaving my grampas estate
I sat in the creek this afternoon designing my own tributaries
shifting the water from east to a westerly flow I found my heart dangling below the waters edge and I presumed I would live forever

but as the day wore through with a soothing mist the land I knew as a child was preserved
because I made it so

the shore is only a soft reminder of what grampa left
and in his last days he reminded me to keep the water flowing

to take a huge breath of oxygen just before the lungs pillowed and fought to be submerged
his wealth was in tying knots on burnt baileys at 8pm when the skippers came to the surface

I'm not a fisherman without him
but my tears flow in abundance when I think of leaving this land I made with him

from the rocks lining the entry way
a dumping ground for the concrete that made our city
sweet sounds from David bringing the sax to the creek
and in a mindless surge of courage
I break rules
show the night that sequence
bought from resolve and in the madness I'm calmed

And everything that flows from it is wonderful! And, God, how it does flow. More than 'mere' words it is like the soft, respectful, longing caresses of your hand on the old man's cheek. You could retire on that line about him tying knots on burnt baileys... but hopefully, you won't!

I wait patiently for you
long draws from a square
next to that street light
that has a been hit by more than one mail truck
it reaches inside me and bends time backwards
as I wait for you

smoky steam rises through doors to sewer
painted lines are fading right to left
depending on which direction traffic is flowing
and the damp streets with residue
are slick in the morning
as commuters spin warn tires
past oil, rock and cement
me standing, brooding
waiting for you
patiently for you

my breaker is worn
fiddling with the zipper
I release some body heat into a folded map of downtown
and decide to find you there
in that same little shop that captured me
and connected me to you almost two years ago
when I stopped hurting and started living
in mornings lined with hedges cut in the early
with doors closed I remember that the town sleeps until at least 10
4 hours past my waking
since I have been waiting for you
with pockets in hands and scarves holding my neck with a gentle hug
I wait patiently for you

the broken down shell of a light flickers in the early evening
when you told me you would meet me there
I criss cross traffic patterns and early lights in my eyes and realize that
I'm squinting deeply into a spot on the map that is only accessible through one ways
I wait for you
and as the sky dips down and takes one more yawn of day air
a fiddling man and a cow jump moons as I tilt my head to the heavens
waiting patiently for you to arrive
I brood a bit and pace
with cigarette stains on my writing wall
and black leather soaked in Oregon's rusty rain
I smother the breathe from my lungs into a wisp
that floats to my fingers and warms the tips enough to light another stick and
wait patiently for you

the dark sets in an adjacent sun and the opacity in my eyes is becoming clouded
small rivulets drip from my brow
saline mixes with acid rain
I kick the last burning ember of today into a curb drain
wet tobacco floating with the filter falling off
it drips down below
as I wait patiently for you
I walk to the corner and spit air from my lips that pretends to be someone much younger
and as my boots slosh
I walk home
waiting patiently for you

A Sudden Moment

Triggered by an apparition
An eclipse befell me. I
Soon drifted into an heirloom
Pleading that my sanity
Would return. My keepsake
My panacea, attempted to
Guide me through the storm
Where my eyes were heavy
For my soul was suffering
From a temblor, and my spirit
Was knotted with splinters.

I was in dire need of a quilt
A quilt of calmness, for an
Existential cobweb had lain
Claim to my psyche. How I
Longed for soundness, or even
A citadel for the mercy of
Groundedness. I was falling
Where I stood, in need of a
Spiritual physician—the grand
Potter of clay to aid my sore.

Somehow, I had unveiled
Darkness and the zephyrs of
Hell were upon me. How was
I to war with the unseen

Desolate cities, screaming in
My mind for clemency!

I took refuge in the spirit
Saturating my being in
Prayer, lost in the confines of

Lots of food for thought up there...I wouldn't blame Obama for everything though. He is doing his best to build back a country.

They come
every Thursday before noon
each with a story
times are tough
educated people without jobs
who need that chance to tell their story
exist on the $25 dollar gift card for groceries

Tho’ walking on a sunlit street
Within brilliance of its’ light
A man sees only darkness
Within his inner sight

For his home has been taken
His job is there no more
Wall Street Greed ate his house
… his job’s on a foreign shore

Congress makes no decisions
Save for accusations placed
Against another party
They hope they will disgrace

Joblessness simply escalates
Children go un-fed
Bonuses for the privatized
Should be the children’s bread

Avarice, unfettered
Swells the corporate’s stash
While ethics and morals
Go discarded with panache

T’is corporate’s calloused gluttony
Of un-satiated greed
Which drives the avarice onward
To feed that malfeasant breed

The country now divided ‘tween:
“The Haves” and the “Have-nots”
The latter begs from hunger
The former steer their yachts

America’s succumbed to Greed
And China holds their purse
Proven will be: Greed and Avarice
America’s final curse.

All those spoken, hurtful things.

Those who spoke the hurtful words
Which roll like balls of billiards
Inside our heads eternally
Care not of damage they don’t see

But all the pain, their words have caused
Which haunts us every time we’ve paused
Will form our lives and mold our fate
And of our lives will educate

And of their words we can’t forget
No longer do we fear nor fret
There are higher planes we see
On which to place our normalcy

Words I write are very, very rarely directed at an individual, and even more rarely do they criticize or condemn. Only do I pen such missives as clarifications or adulations. The rest of my writing is of a general scope and, if read and re-read without a personalization of any kind, can be seen as just that. I hold malice for no living soul – certainly not angels. “Won’t Forget” was penned for a fellow volunteer worker, who had been nearly spiritually devastated by thoughtless, intentionally hurtful comments from a third party – I just happened to also place it here in this forum – in two locations.

The traveller reeked of weariness,
His companion was Fatigue
Wear upon his clothes suggest
He’d come a million league.

Gaunt were eyes deep set and brown
Above his cheekbones high
His being was pure somnolence
And I heard his silent cry.

Hard roads had been his travel
With pains chiselled on his face
In lines of furrows on his brow
Permanently enlaced

Around I saw no motion there, then …
His head began to rise
Finally he looked at me …
Suffering in his eyes.

So quietly I attended
And with a heavy heart
I wanted so to speak to him …
But knew not how to start

Within his laboured breathing
He then began to speak
His words, when finally spoken
Were truthful and unique

His lips began to form the words …
Then said; “My name is: Union Man,
I’m a father; I’ve worked hard;
… always done the best I can.”

“The road’s become uphill and steep with
Burdens I can’t propel
I’ve tried to move on and forward …
But, was struck here … and I fell.

“There are others on me
Who so do depend
I must keep moving forward,
This mustn’t be my end.

“So now I reach out to you
Together we’ve never failed
I’m turning now to you
‘Fore on hardships I’m impaled”.

A calloused hand then extended
Toward my outstretched hand
And I want to heed the call
For this Union Man

But, Greed and Avarice have won
And assistance can’t be lent …

We are forever joined, you and I. When one soul feels the pain – the other also sheds the tears. I believe our spirits were joined when our souls touched on the day we first communicated. The planes on which we wander are melded, not parallel, because they have crossed and re-crossed one another many times – in other lifetimes as well as this one. What we experience is beyond mere friendship – it transcends the physical and defies time or distance.
