should prostitution be a legal business in the ukPage 6 of 6    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)

It beats me why men pay for it.

I guess it's because women hold the key. From the point of view of a bloke I have often felt that I am paying for it anyway, drinks, meals etc.

I met an American chap in Bangkok who expressed such sentiments to me. He had gotten totally fed up of having to wine and dine his dates back in the states a few times before getting some so decided instead to save the money and simply have a holiday in Thailand two or three times a year. I don't see that for myself but it is a point of view.

Aitche, I'm afraid that view is alive and well. I went out with a woman a few times, never was going to go anywhere and we remained friends. A group of us were having a conversation about this subject and she said that the chap should always pay as the women spent their time and money looking good. Not my words and I have been out with any number of women who do expect the bloke to pay (maybe I pick the wrong ones?).

What I was talking about and my American friend was saying is that everyone has their own rules and sex only occurs after 3,4,5? dates and he was fed up of the idea that sex only came after paying for x number of meals/drinks/cinema tickets.

For myself, I'm not interested in sex outside of a relationship and thinking about it, I actually like the idea of that slow build up of getting to know each other.

Well as we are now paying the EU extra dosh based on the idea that we are very successful in this area perhaps we should legalise it.

Prostitution is never going to be stopped. Being illegal and hugely profitable it attracts the criminal element and results in people trafficking, violence and coercion.

Bring it out into the light and perhaps the really nasty side of this business could be properly targeted.

Perhaps decriminalise the act of selling sex, so that sex workers are not prosecuted, but criminalise the act of buying sex, and then actually police it.

That would be the Swedish model which clearly doesn't work. Amnesty International have got into some trouble over the issue with high profile celebrities criticising their calls for decriminalisation. As long as its between consenting adults and discrete I don't see the problem.
