Whats your town/city famous for?Page 5 of 7    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7)
vegas? it's one of those places, whenever i'm overseas for a long time i miss it here incredibly. but when i'm here i pine for so many other beautiful places i have known. sick i know, but that might in a small part be attributed to having grown up here. and yes, while i have a great job with an amazing company, i'd move in a heartbeat for the right reasons. see, it's not really "my" town anymore...

but vegas is famous for the familia, lights, money, gaming, sex, entertainment, drinking, smoking, shopping, elvis, tourism, crime, drugs, grafitti, our homeless and transients, our foster children, mayor oscar goodman, siegfreid and roy, wayne newton, the brat pack, cool cat, andre agassi, celebrities (yawn), weddings, divorces, attorneys, an amazing ferrari maserati dealership if i do say so...;)

lake mead, hoover dam, mount charleston, red rock natl park, tark the legend, boxing, concerts, live shows and pretty great entertainment, fine dining, water sports, rodeo, ces, comdex, all other conventions, lounge acts, hype, secrecy, beautiful desert sunsets, dry heat, wind, dust, allergies, corruption, greed, traffic, bad drivers, survival, buffets ugh; and cheapest food available anywhere i've seen in the contiguous us...

it's also the fastest growing city in the us and has more than 6000 people moving here per month, its close proximity to california, arizona, and utah and of course disneyland.

we have among many others, resorts like the rio, bellagio, caesar's, harrah's, mandalay bay, mgm, wynn, venetian, paris, the luxor, treasure isalnd, mirage, hardrock hotel, flamingo, bally's, redrock, all station casinos, barbary coast, icky palace station, etc etc and all the beautiful (gak) downtown fremont street...

it's ever worked on maze of highways always under construction including but not limited to the spaghetti bowl, i-15, i-95, 215 etc.

being a 24/7 playground at any time any day or night you can procure about anything your heart or mind can think of desiring and too much else to think of presently, although i'm sure another vegan will set this to rights...

I currently live in Columbus, GA. This town is famous for winning the little league world series. Frankly that means nothing to me because I hate baseball but it was big news around here.

My hometown named "Kirkland Lake, Ontario Canada" is famous for:

Gold Mines

Actor Micheal Mahonen from "Road to Avonlea" played as "Gus Pike"
4 Seasons=Winter, Spring, Summer and Fall
Recently known for our new "Hockey Heritage North" building
Sir Harry Oakes, museum was once his home
A home on Main Street was well known as a Brothel in the 1930's for all the miners and is now a family home
"Swastika" a little village just 10 minutes from town was named after Hitler visited and named it (if im correct about that)
Famous for fishing, ice fishing in winter, hunting for all the southerners
Adams Mine (the place where Toronto wanted to send their garbage to at one time)

Anyways thats all i can remember for now if i remember more i'll post it another time if this thread continues.

For now I want to wish all the POF'ers a "MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR"

Portland, Oregon

We're known for:
Rose Festival

Portland Jail...Trailblazers

One of only two cities in the U.S. containing an extinct volcano (Mt. Tabor)

Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons grew up in Portland. Many of the of Simpsons characters are named after the streets here. The nuclear power-plant is based on the old Trojan Nuclear plant.

Gus Van Sant, film-maker lives here (Good Will Hunting, My Private Idaho)

Nike and Intel are both based here.

Nicknamed "Little Beiruit" by Bush 41 because of the nutty, radical lefty protestors that cause trouble.

We have more strip clubs per capita than any city in the U.S.

I don't think this is a "biggy" for our town but I think is really cool. The writer for the 1st James Bond Novel "Casino Royale" was a spy himself and trained in our town of Whitby at Camp X which I didn't know existed here back in WWI !!!! Thats famous I think that we had the creator train here in our town!

Pittsburgh PA, checkin' in!!! Voted the "most livable city," according to Rand-McNally. Woohoo!!

Famous for....steel. At least, we USED to be, about 60 years ago, but for some reason people still think we're this grimy industrial city with gray air and smokestacks as far as the eye can see...NOT TRUE, PEOPLE!!

Home to the Steelers (2005 Superbowl champions--everyone around here's a little bit sports crazy), Mr. Roger's Neighborhood, Kennywood Park (amusement park with some really great classic old-school wooden rollercoasters), Isaly's (aka the place that first sold the now-famous Klondike bar), and birthplace of the ferris wheel, the Nickelodeon, and playwright August Wilson.

Oh, and don't forget Pirmanti Brothers--damn good sandwiches (especially at 3 AM after you've been drinking all night)--typical Pirmanti's sandiwich consists of some kind of meat, egg, cole slaw and french fries slapped between two thick slices of bread. Mmmmmmmm, tasty!!
