Hell, Michigan - Town of Hell

Patterson Lake Road, SW of Pinckney. US 23 to Exit 54. Follow M-36 through Hamburg and Pinckney. When you reach downtown Pinckney, look on your left for the sign to Hell. Follow the signs, you can't miss it. The town is roughly 1/2 hour from Ann Arbor, 45 minutes from Flint, just over an hour from Detroit, and 1 1/2 hours from Toledo.

Meteorologists often reference the temperature in Hell, Michigan... they LOVE to mention that it is a "cold day in Hell."

Dennis, Massachusetts...made the top ten list of best small towns a few years back...The beaches are some of the most beautiful in the world....coupled with a thriving arts scene thats the envy of the East Coast....Pottery rejects for free on display all along King's Highway, Rte 6A
Chestertown, Maryland...so did this beauty of a place, another cultural college town find with surrounded by great beaches, an incredible array of historical buildings, outstanding blue crab and stripper fish and friendly people..
Lewes, Delaware....Pristine town beach perfect for swimming, , eat homemade ice cream on a working dairy farm sitting on a fence by the cows, adorable gingerbread victorian houses, great 1940s grocery store, wonderful shops and resturants surrounded by the canal and harbor, one of the best art shows on the east coast, all right next door to the incredibly breathtakingly beautiful Cape Henlopen State Park, where the wild dolphins put on a show for free...Need I say more?
Salado, Texas...a real historical gem not ruined by commercialism and the strip malls in central Texas.....babbling creek runs right thru town amonst great art shows and antique shops....Stop and eat the corn dodgers at the Stagecoach Inn...You wont be dissapointed.
The people are awesome here.

Far from being a small town but Honolulu, incuding Waikiki, is the safest big city in the country. An hours drive takes you to the small village where I used to live called Haleiwa. This time of year you might get to watch them surf the 30 footers.

If you are an NFL fan, I'd have to say Green Bay, WI. The people there are some of the friendliest I have ever met in my life, and it is home to the greatest sports franchise in the world - the Green Bay Packers! :)

I nominate for consideration, Lawrence,KS (UofKS). A fabulous eclectic town with a vast cool variety of individuals, shops, and eateries. It has carefully preserved historic houses and the original downtown, which is buzzing even at 3PM Sunday afternoon. A city boy, I was not entirely sold on rural living; I soon changed my mind. When I first bought my property in the area, I had a big draft horse go down- a call to one person for help resulted in an army of over 20 people and equipment showing up; most of which I had never laid eyes on. One of these unknown individuals had the only rig in the area big enough to haul a Clydesdale- he transported the horse 3 hrs to K-State and would not take a penny for fuel. "I know how it feels to have one of these big 'ol boys sick." He drawled, "I'm glad ta be able ta hep ya out a little."

Something in our national character is vanishing as our small towns and their rich heritage fades away.....

Frankenmuth, Michigan.

Such a cute little place, it's a little slice of Bavaria smack in the middle of vast farm lands. The restaurants there are great; they have the best chicken dinners, and even the servers wear traditional costumes. There's a christmas store (that boasts as the biggest in the WORLD) that's open...I think 364 days a year (I don't actually know WHICH day it's closed haha). They have several festivals a year, including Oktober fest, Bavarian fest, a summer music/polka fest. Most the buildings are Franconian-style architecture.

AAAnnnnddd, if that doesnt hold your interest, it's very close to a large shopping center that features major brand name outlet stores. :)

Love this post! Bottom line is that no matter what direction you drive there are wonderful quaint little towns! America the Beautiful it really is - and the small towns across this great nation are one of our greatest treasures!

Visit your local used book store, or drop by Amazon.com and get a copy of the book, "Blue Highways: A Journey Into America" written by William Least-Moon. This is an incredible book about a man's journey around the US traveling on the blue highways on the map! For years I carried this book with my on business and tried to visit as many of the places he wrote about!

For me - best small towns? Definitely Netarts, Oregon, Jacksonville, Oregon, and Port Townsend, Washington. (Just to name a few!)
