Peppermint p, thanks for the pointer to Damiana, it appears to be effective from what I have read.

I had read your post before, but since I don't have high BP and don't feel a need for an aphrodisiac, I didn't think to google it.

But the info on Damiana says that it is particularly stimulating for sexually exhausted (rats), at times I have to say, enough is enough, let's just cuddle for awhile. :):)

I will order some and see if it has the purported effect on humans.

This guy has always been one of my favourite practitioners of holistic methods.
The article you want is this one:
He comes up organically in the search engines and I checked in on the authority of the site...he ranks pretty high. Considering the state of Africa and the high numbers of Hypertension (I double checked that too btw) I would say his track record is pretty shiny. I hate to be the one to tell you this though; changing your diet is sort of a necessary part of holistic and herbal healing. Please don scowl at me, I'm just the messenger!

Contributors to high blood pressure include

1 Stress. By activating the sympathetic nervous system, stress can cause the arteries to maintain a more rigid tone.
2 Excessive salt consumption: The sodium in salt can cause excess water retention, expands blood volume and ultimately increases blood pressure.
3A diet low in calcium, magnesium and potassium.
4 Insulin resistance: This condition can increase blood pressure by various mechanisms including increased systemic inflammation and sodium retention as a result of kidney damage.
5 Excessive alcohol intake, defined as drinking in excess of two drinks daily for men under age 65, or in excess of one drink daily for women or men over age 65.
6 Being overweight.
7*** Medications. Some prescription drugs, including steroids, birth control pills, decongestants, NSAIDS and diet pills can raise blood pressure. Some over-the-counter medicines, such as those containing licorice root, ephedra, guarana, kola nut, yerba mate, ginseng and yohimbe, may also raise blood pressure.

I thought this was interesting support for those like Pepper who insist olive oil is good for your health. Now they are closer to finding out exactly why.

Scientists discover why olive oil lowers blood pressure

(WASHINGTON-AFP) - The secret to the Mediterranean diet may be in the salad.

Eating unsaturated fats, like those in olive oil, along with leafy greens and other vegetables creates a certain kind of fatty acid that lowers blood pressure, scientists said Monday.

These nitro fatty acids are formed when consuming spinach, celery and carrots that are filled with nitrates and nitrites, along with avocado, nuts and olive oils that contain healthy fats.

Nitro fatty acids appear to inhibit an enzyme known as soluble epoxide hydrolase, which regulates blood pressure, said the research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a peer-reviewed US journal.

The study was based on experiments in lab mice, and was funded by the British Heart Foundation.

"The findings of our study help to explain why previous research has shown that a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil or nuts can reduce the incidence of cardiovascular problems like stroke, heart failure and heart attacks," said Philip Eaton, professor of cardiovascular biochemistry at King's College London.

While most experts agree that the Mediterranean diet -- which consists of lots of vegetables, fish, grains, red wine and fatty nuts and oils -- brings health benefits, there has been little scientific consensus about how or why.

Some have touted red wine as a driving force behind the ability of Europeans to eat high fat cheeses and meats while maintaining better overall health than Americans.

But research published last week found that a key antioxidant in red wine, resveratrol, did not help people in Italy live longer or avoid cancer or heart disease.

Meditation, just sit and just relax 15-20 minutes a day and think of things that calm you.
Some herbal teas could help also.

Massage, aromatherapy Clary sage, white sage and lavender mixed with lemon essential oil.
Men seem to like a bit of pine in the mix. (Woodsy)
Massage into shoulders and sit a few minutes inhaling deeply.

I swear by lavender and peppermint mixed to relax me.
Some studies show that mix in particular reduces blood pressure.

This was probably said before but check your salt intake. Don't add any salt to your foods! If you eat out a lot or eat a lot of processed food you don't have much control over how much salt gets in your body, so you may want to change those habits if you have them. In restaurants, you can ask that no salt be added, and some processed food also have a "low sodium" label. This is probably the most pertinent dietary action you can take.

Otherwise, don't expose yourself to smoke, be active, and avoid/reduce stress ...

^^^^^^^^^Very important to watch salt.
That and some supplemental magnesium in the form of citrate and garlic would be a good start along with walking and finding a way to relax when tense.
It can take up to 12 weeks in some individuals to see a difference if taking a capsule form of magnesium.

Sing Kokomo in your head and think of the beach or do some light yoga or deep breathing with aromatherapy.

L arginine, with garlic and magnesium is a "cocktail" quite a few have had good success with , ALONG with heart healthy foods, low sodium intake and an exercise program.

L arginine needs to be balanced with l lysine, so eat foods containing l lysine also ,or if taking a supplement, try and fine the combo.
L arginine can improve sexual function also. ( Watch taking to much if prone to cold sores).
L arginine changes into no. (nitric oxide) and helps the blood vessels relax/improves circulation.
Magnesium relaxes blood vessels and calms. Its best taken in divided doses in a highly absorbable form.
A balance of 2:1 mg to ca is a good rule of thumb.Calcium is best obtained from food sources esp if you have heart disease/hardening of the arteries.
I would talk with your cardiologist before taking supplemental calcium or any natural remedy that is not food if you have be diagnosed with heart disease.
Garlic is best crushed from the clove and then let it sit in a bit of evoo for about 10-15 minutes, making garlic oil.
Just throw it on your food of choice or down it.
Cayenne is amazing also for your heart health. If you cant take the heat in your mouth, they do have capsules. Take with food unless you are used to it.

The health benefits of garlic are astounding in so many ways and the more of the allicin in the form you take , the better.Just pop some chlorophyll if you cant take the breath.
If you take a capsule, make sure the brand has studies that show how much allicin you are getting.
Crushing the fresh clove releases more allicin. Uncooked is the way to get the benefits . Heating slightly isnt much of an issue.

Magnesium and/or potassium deficiency helps push BP up, since those two plus sodium sort interact to balance each other. search for it.

Mg deficiency is supposedly widespread.

Mg citrate and K citrate are the more bio-avaible forms, and cheap.

I have tried the following "natural" remedies to control my high BP. And I'd just like to mention my high BP is hereditary; it's not due to weight, cholesterol or being sedentary.

I have tried: cider vinegar, hibiscus tea, more dairy, less dairy, garlic supplements, fish oil capsules, pickle juice, more potassium, no red meat, flax seed, and I know there's more but I can't remember.

The ONLY thing that worked for me is taking a drug called Lisinopril HCTZ. Also, eliminating all canned food and fast food due to their high salt content.

thinknmansgirl- High blood pressure, especially long term, is serious.
I do NOT recommend trying a homeopathic approach.
There could be any number of underlying causes for long term high blood pressure.
You should see a heart specialist asap and whatever you do, do NOT stop taking your medicine!
Diuretics and/or potassium treatment is a viable option, but these things should ALWAYS be monitored by a doctor.
Overuse of diuretics and/or potassium can lead to heart palpitation, dizziness, fainting and possible heart failure, do NOT attempt this on your own.
I realize you are limited by finances.
Schedule a visit with the physician who has been treating you for your high blood pressure.
Tell him exactly what you have told us and ask him for resources/referrals to agency's that can help you pay for the medication that you NEED.
I know for sure that Catholic Social services can help.
If you know any social workers, they are an excellent source for referrals to agency's that can help you.
Consider this as NOT optional, it's about your health and well being, PLEASE do this for yourself.

DNA can be manipulated/changed.Its proven scientifically.
Don't get stuck in a" victim of DNA" mindset.
Genetic "determinism" is a flawed theory.

No one has said all natural things work for everyone, esp. quickly like a RX drug.
Most trying natural things don't give it time or dont take the time to try different things in correct dosages/combo's.
Some only try one thing when they need to change many, including a positive outlook and diet.
Many "hear" about things and have no clue how to use them.
It can take a year or more, depending. Esp regarding the mind/body connection.

Having physicians in the family has nothing to do with what I have learned in alternative medicine and I never claimed it did. In fact we enjoyed the debates..many years over the table.

It did make accessible to me journals, more books and testing in a lab when I other wise could not always afford such luxuries.
I referred to it in a completely different context.RX company kickbacks.

So you have tried a few things and it didn't work. That could be for many reasons.
I would just guess, maybe you don't what you are doing.
Maybe your age, general health, life style, sex and /or mind set is the major issue and you are to toxic. I have no clue.

peppermint petunias- I want to clarify that I am not against natural medicine/homeopathy, as a whole.
Herbal treatments and/or diet and lifestyle changes can be helpful with SOME issues- one example is the use of Melatonin for insomnia.
However, there are some conditions that REQUIRE treatment with prescription medication and heart disease/high blood pressure is one of those conditions.
My grandmother had high blood pressure and it was only when she found a physician that put her on Buspar, diuretics and potassium that it got under control.
One poster suggested trying potassium therapy and even went so far as to say it's a diuretic, that's NOT true.
Potassium is needed WITH the use of diuretics, to replace what the diuretics deplete.
Use of potassium without knowing what you are doing is like playing with fire.
I believe that homeopathy and natural remedies CAN work, sometimes.
I don't mean to sound like a know it all, far from it, but bells and whistles start going off when I see misinformation put out there as fact.
This is NOT directed at you, peppermint, I've NEVER seen you suggest anything dangerous.
I am asking every one on pof, if an Op asks for health advice, PLEASE know what you are talking about before giving advice when it comes to peoples health. Lives are on the line.
Peppermint petunias knows her stuff, there are also a lot of nurses here. I'm NOT saying you have to be a nurse or a doctor to give advice, but I AM asking NOT to do it unless you are VERY sure that what you say is CORRECT.

^^^^^^^^ I wasn't offended at all.

Use of potassium without knowing what you are doing is like playing with fire.

Potassium can be very dangerous ( cause hyperkalemia) if taking to much.
Most supplements of potassium will not be over a certain amount because of that fact.
But dont dose yourself.

HBP is very dangerous and usually natural remedies are for borderline patients.

Always work with your Dr. when trying them. Ask if its Ok to try*such and such* first, or along with lower dosages of medications..
If they say NO, then you do what the Dr says.

The Dr should know "you" and all of your issues and we certainly can't know that.
I think most , like you know.
I may not say it every time, but you need to clear anything with and discuss with your Dr, what you are doing, including what you eat, and supplements.

Maybe, I should always add for new readers..Discuss with physician first.

The secret to the Mediterranean diet may be in the salad.

^^^^^^^^^ They put it on a lot of food, esp after cooking.
I said in the Mediterranean diet thread, its the olive oil and garlic.(Not the food).

They eat a lot of carbs imo, but drench almost everything in olive oil and use garlic liberally.
Even bread, they dip in EVOO, garlic and other spices.
Mediterranean oregano is much different than ours also.
also eggies and pasta, most pour it on liberally.

NOT changing the genes.

I hope thats not what came across.

Your DNA "profile" wont be changed, but you are not predestined to most things so called"genetic" in your DNA. You CAN change it in most cases by what you eat, don't eat , do and dont do.Environmental/psychological issues also have an effect.
Thats for Presbyterians isn't it?( predestination) :)

Rocket-ship- It can be, but you have to monitor it.
Get a blood pressure cuff that will give you the results when the check is done.
Start by knowing your baseline/resting blood pressure : Sit for at least a half an hour and take it and log your results, including your pulse.
Then take your pulse and blood pressure before and after a walk. If both results are within normal range (you can Google this to find the numbers), keep up the same walking routine for at least a week, always note your pulse and blood pressure before and after.
If the numbers stay withing normal limits with just walking, then you can try jogging.
Start out with short jogs, and again, check your pulse and blood pressure before and IMMEDIATELY after.
You can keep stepping up your routine until you get a pulse and/or blood pressure that is out of normal range,
When that happens, you have to go back down to where you were when the results were still within normal range.
You can also check your pulse during your walks and when you step up to jogging, if your pulse gets too high, you have to slow down.
This can also be done by a stress test at a doctors office, they do the same thing, but you are in an office surrounded by medical personal, which makes things safer and they will you give you a print out that tells you how far you can safely push yourself.
I would go with the stress test first, just to be safe, and then use it as a guide going forward on your own.

I want to thank all of you who have participated in this thread ...
yesterday, I got a new blood pressure machine and hadn't taken
my blood pressure in about a month since the old one failed ...
when I saw the numbers, I was shocked ... horrified ... I'd never
HAD HIGH blood pressure before and I was considering going
to the E.R. ... came in here instead ... saw that some folks were
bragging about getting their numbers down about where my
highest were and realized I was over-reacting ...

so thanks ... I slept ... got up, determined to do better ... low salt,
low fat, more exercise ... taking the suggestions made by my
cardiologist !!

first Q I would ask is how different is the new BP machine, particularly the cuff, from what you are used to? I have found that each unit is slightly different in what it wants, though there are commonalities. Make sure you align the cuff correctly with your (brachial?) artery as the manual instructs - this alone can add 10 points to your readings (learned the hard way) May be an expectation of using on the Left arm vs. right -- makes a difference with my unit. weird.

To the OP, lose weight! has this been mentioned?
Visceral fat, that fat which builds up around your internal organs (vs that which is under your skin, subcutaneous) is a killer. It is metabolically active and can have a tremendous effect on BP; and on certain other hormone levels - esp. in men.
Get out and walk, not stroll. Work up to a fast pace, say ~4mph, for several miles. For most people that's the secret: lose weight and move.

Look for generics: generic lisinopril is, what, $50-$60 / year. Others not much more. Talk to your doc. Focus on getting BP down immediately, then make the lifestyle changes; don't think you'll do the lifestyle choice and then get the BP down. Hypertension has a way of biting you in the rump when you're least expecting it.

Oh, almost forgot, Molly, take your new BP unit in to the doc with your next appt and have it checked. Don't assume it is accurate right out of the box - you'd be surprised.

^^^^^^^^^PLEASE do this Molly.
Also ,you check it in frt of the nurse yourself so if you are not doing it correctly the nurse can show you how.

Lifestyle changes - more exersize.

I used to suffer low blood pressure and keep feeling light headed a lot and passing out, think I was lacking iron though and had messed up blood sugar.

Now I take a load of vitamins and avoid unhealthy food and obviously never smoke anything. Also drink rarely.

Recently have slightly high blood pressure readings during the day (never morn or eve). for me: high b/p is 145/ 84

My BMI is 24.5 and it has been suggested that I should lower the BMI to 20 - lose weight

I will try the 5-10 pound weight loss and see if there is a difference.

Interesting ideas. apple cider vinegar -- my grandmother used this treatment a long time ago
