The Maytag repairman!

Or tradespeople in general. We would not have anything without someone to build it. Doctors could not do their job without technicians, tool and dye makers for the instruments, builders for the hospitals and houses... In fact we would have nothing at all without tradesfolk.

There is no one word answer for the question you ask. This is what makes society. Society exists on collective efforts.

The doctor needs a patient, the farmer needs a hungry mouth, the carpenter needs homeless and the list goes on.

Garbage collectors and sewage workers.
Modern sanitation and the availability of clean water have done more to extend and enhance human life than all the medical and technological discoveries in history combined.

1. Researchers in Science, Medical fields

I'd have to go with this one, or inventors.

Teachers help people to learn, but before formal teachers, parents and elders were the teachers. Farming has been around since the beginning of time, but can be learned by anybody. Doctors and physicians help heal those that are sick, but their knowledge is completely branched off of the studies done by the Scientist/Researcher.

It takes years upon years of studying to recognize the differences and similarities between molecules, and how each element reacts to the others. These people are the ones that spend their lives dedicated to figuring out how to fight new viruses, stunt mutations, and develop new serums to battle new bacterial strains.

Engineers...hands down...without us...you'd all be f'd.

I'm an Engineer. It seems they don't need us they way we get laid off all the time. So I wouldn't recommend it as a career these days. Don't work in the defense industry, that's a guaranteed layoff. But if it wasn't for engineers, we wouldn't have much in the way of technology.

Let "most socially useful" be defined as; The activity which results in the largest net benefit for society.

Utilitarianism is only similar to this. There are many problems with this. Firstly, there is no unit of measure or even a method of measurement. There is no basis for argumentation. Any answer to the question amounts to an expression of preference, which was actually pointed out to begin with. It is like asking whether chocolate or vanilla is better.

Executioners of Engineers....somebody has to shut those arrogant b*stards up!

Great!! Now I have to show it to my brother in law... Metallurgical Engineer, and as arrogant as they come.

I still say no one can do their job without the tradesfolk to build their tools

If you are talking historically, farmers (farming techniques allowed urbanization), without it we'd still be hunter/gatherers and dying at the age of 30.

As for modern society?

Printers.

The printed word and the rapid dissemination of information has allowed more scientific, philosophical and economic progress than any advance in history (to date). Similarly, the creation of paper money (and later financial instruments such as bonds, stock certificates, etc) has led to the rapid mobilization of capital in ways completely unrecognizable when the form of money was metal coin (or shells, tulips, etc), allowing commerce to expand in ways that would have been unimaginable.

You could claim "inventors", but it really isn't a profession per se -- historically "inventing" was not an actual profession. Inventions were conceived by individuals in any of a variety of occupations who made incremental changes or substantive leaps in technology.

As for Printers (the folks that actually print stuff) they are actual professionals that continue to this day. What do they print?

- Books
- Newspapers and magazines
- Money
- lots more stuff

I won't speak to the future role of the Printer as a profession, just suffice to say that the advance of digital technology and computers will probably erode it's existance until at some point the impact of the professional Printer will be much smaller. However, until then, it's hard to underestimate the Printer and the way their work impacts and permeates almost every level of modern society.

Teachers win hands down on this question. They are critical for guiding our next generation to be well educated and good citizens.

Doctors for healing people when they are sick. Nurses for helping people who are sick. You folks in the medical profession are very special indeed! It takes a special person to enter the health professions.

Police and military to ensure our safety and freedom.

Firefighters

Artists to help make the world more beautiful, musicians to create music that makes people smile. Don't forget the arts!
