Just for fun: What was your first car?Page 7 of 9    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
My first car? Bought it in 1977 for $100 in Texas. Got me to the Rainbow Gathering by Truth Or Consequences, NM, where everybody celebrated 7/7/77. It was a 1965 Silver Anniversary Dodge Dart with push-button automatic transmission. In other words, instead of having a shifting knob on the steering wheel or on the floor, there were buttons on the dash marked P,R,N,D,2,1 and all you had to do was push one of those buttons and it was in gear. Got me all the way out to Cali, where I sold it for parts.

My first car was a used '87 porsche 911. I got it in '90 when I was a junior in high school. I don't know what my parents were thinking. I had it approx 2 weeks, then got popped by CHP doing 120 on the fwy. Needless to say, after that, they sold it and my next car was the bus!

82 chevy celebrity with tinted windows, it was 2001.. I would get pulled over all the time. I rammed a truck and sold it after about 6 months. Then I got a 96 gmc pickup. owned it for about 2 months, drove it up the side of a mountain, dropped 20 feet and totaled it. The day after my insurance expired.. yay...

My first car was an old police car. You know.... "Its got cop shocks, cop tires, cop brakes, cop engine, and the engine was designed pre catalitic converters so it will run ok on regular" (Blues Brothers)

Cost me 100 bucks and I put over 100k miles on it before it finally gave up the ghost...

Yep... 100 bucks... within 6 months, I dropped a thousand dollar stereo into the thing (that's a thousand bucks in "1980's money") and I had a monster stereo *long* before the gangsters learned to abuse the bass.... mine was crystal clear and natural. If there was a piano playing at the time, it sounded like a real piano was in my back seat. If Led Zeppelin was on (which was quite often), it was like they were sitting in my back seat ;-)

Last but not least, my first car didn't have a gas gauge, so I had to keep track of how much I bought and make sure I made it to the gas station in time. It got a whopping 12 miles per gallon, so it wasn't hard to do the math ;-)

Never had to change the oil, either... just the filter... the oil leaked far faster than any "3000 miles between changes" came around.

My first car was a ‘63 Blue VW Beetle. It was 1968 and I was 17 when my dad handed me the keys and the pink slip. He told me he had it insured for the next 6 months, had new tires and brakes. He then said I was 100% responsible for my Bug, if it broke, I had to fix it and pay for the insurance. My brother helped me jazz it up with a good sound system and baby moons. Being a born and raised in So. Cali girl, I had the 4 board rack on top and a few well placed peace sign decals.

I kept my Bug for almost 10 years, even after I bought a ‘69 Roadrunner . Up until a few years ago, I always had a project car, from my ‘57 Chevy to my last project car a ‘78 Anniversary ‘Vette named “Gracie”. I will always be grateful my dad told me “If it breaks, you fix it”. My VW was the beginning of becoming the “Car Chick” I am today.

I still have the best memories a girl could have of driving down Beach Blvd in the early morning hours with the Beach Boys blasting!

I still have the best memories ....

Boy... that's for sure :-) Like this one... my nephew's about 7 years younger than I am.

One night, he and one of his friends grabbed my stereo (it had a "slide-out" mount) and went to listen in my car and have their little "party".... about 45 minutes into that "party", they're hootin' and hollerin' and suddenly "someone" sits straight up in the back seat and yells "HEY!"

It was a friend of mine who got a ride over to my house, but I had already gone to bed. He decided to sleep in my car instead of finding a way back home. (nothing new there)

He said he'd never seen eyes get so big, so fast and they literally dove out of that car :O) I wish I had that on video.

Tons-o-fun in that car.

I was extremely fortunate. I got to drive my mom's 67 convertible Mustang my Jr. & Sr year of school. Black with black top and red interior. I took auto shop too. The guys thought I was the coolest.
The first one I owned was embarrassingly a GOLD Ford escort. An 86 I think. Urgh! This was in 1994. I shouldn't complain cause my mom bought it for me, but she should have included me in the decision. At least not GRANDMA GOLD ya know?
The first one I bought myself was a blue Eclipse. I loved it.

It was a brown used Peugeot. It was about 400.00, and worth every penny. It became worth more with every trip to the shop...

I was 18--I learned to drive a little late, but I had a date who was intent on teaching me properly, and he drove us halfway down the Devil's Slide on Hwy 1 and showed me how to change a tire...right then and there.

At least it wasn't raining...

^^^I can’t think of a scarier place to have to change a tire.

My 1st car was a ’64 VW bug. I paid $300 my junior year. It doubled my truancy rate. I got popped for 14 cuts the first semester. I guess I didn’t know how to handle the freedom very well. I’m still not sure!

Oh good, a car gets you on the driver's side, or the cliffs to the ocean below swallow you on the passengers!
Learning to drive stories are fun. My dad taught me. He took me to a big huge empty lot for our first few days. After a couple of trys at each lesson, he'd then ask me if I thought that "I got it", whatever it was we were working on. Then when I'd say 'yes', he'd then say, "good, try it again in just a second" and then he'd get out of the car and stand himself as a pylon at a key location in what I was about to maneuver. Only twice did he say, "oh, and by the way, if you mess up, it's just your dad!".
I told that story to my 13 year old son and told him I'd do the same for him.......he's not too sure he wants to learn at 15 now.... lol
A few months later when we were in the middle of nowhere (soCal was so different back then!) when he was passenger he told me to open it up shall we say just a little faster than the speed limit..............He wanted to be sure that I could do everything that a kid out with the engine would want to do when he's not looking. Gonna hafta take my son to New Mexico to recreate those times.

Mine was a 1976 green volkswagon rabbit I got in 1986. Called it the green machine. One time, I had my girl friend up front and 3 football players (friends) in the back, SQUISHED, going to a party....and obviously we exceeded the weight on the car, and it was rear of the car just barely scraped the asphalt as we were driving to the party...there may have been some sparks???......Ahhhhh, good times ....! :)

1960 Austin-Healey 3000, black with red leather, wire wheels, 4 speeds plus overdrive. No windows, had side curtains and a ragtop.
Roger Moore drove one in "The Saint" on TV, then switched to a Volvo P1800.
I had never driven a stick shift, I just knew that I wanted it:)
That car would be worth some good bucks today(sigh), I paid $650 and it was in xlnt condition.

Similar to post #136, another Buick here: A 1972 Buick Centurion 455-4 barrel; another tank. Unfortunately, it only lasted a year. The mounts for the real axle had rusted away due to the use of salt buildup from the Northeast.

I still have my second car. It's 35 years old and still running. The other car I have (in one of my photos) is 44 and also running. A family member was the original owner of the latter.

A '56 Chevy 2-door sedan. It was a really clean car, no dents, with a 6-cylinder and Powerglide. Not sure what color it started out as, but someone had taken it to Earl Scheib and had it painted navy blue. It got me everywhere just fine. I sold it to a guy who was going to make it into a street rod and just wanted the body. Wish I still had it!
