I've got a permit for a three week river trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon a year from now.


Have heard how they allocate most of those permits to the commercial outfits, and how difficult it is for a lone wolf to get on (waiting list is, like, years). Well done! Yeah, the Colorado waves can be huge, usually straight, but the Gauley, imho, is way better, and the New, with a little water in it, is a blast, too.

Hmmmm ....how to keep this remotely on topic.....

Yup, it's been a long wait for this permit. My last trip was in '98. Not a lot of do-it-yourself private permits available, but this will make my seventh trip since '84. I generally aim for 8-10 participants, mix of genders and skills. I think it's safe to say all women participants meet the tomboy test.

As for comparing Gauley, New, and Colorado, that's like comparing sex experiences. While certainly some rank higher than others, I hope no single one stands out as 'best'. I've had 150-1000+ days on each of those three, with memorable magic moments on each. Think of day trips on New or Gauley as great one time experiences, three weeks out of touch with the rest of the world while totally immersed in a constantly evolving Canyon trip as more of an extended relationship.

Great Tomboy experiences all!

That depends on alot of factors.
When I was in my late 20's I dated a girl for 5 yrs who was without a doubt the most intriguing woman I ever met.
She and I did the following together....
Hunted,fished,trapped,bailed hay,worked the fields,partied,sat at home,watched sports(her idea not mine....I'm not much of an armchair athlete),went out on the town(she would wear "peasant dresses and no underwear....ULTRA sexy!!!!)rebuilt the motor in my truck a couple of times...she was better at the mechanics part than I was)We swam naked together at midnight in the creek by her house we made love on the shore by the moonlight and we had one **** of a great 4 yrs together.
I loved that little girl more than I can even explain.She actually armwrestled a guy at a local watering hole one night and won....he paid up....she was awesome.
Then she decided she needed to have a baby and at that time I was not ready for that kind of commitment .I take bringing children into this shit hole of a world very seriously and we parted company.
.I will obviously never forget her and her ways but I have never found anyone like her since and I am now in my early 40's.
She was one hell of a shot with a rifle and could fillet a bass for the grill like no body'd business and she loved me with her whole body,heart and mind.We just weren't meant to be together.
I miss her much and yes.....I would absolutely without question date a "tomboy" girl again.
I guess this long winded( and please excuse me I'm feeling kind of sentimental today) answer is a resounding "YES".....I would.

When you're hanging out with a tomboy the cooking duties get shared, don't they? But it's easy on Canyon trips. I go through a local outfitter who quizzes us on our preferences and buys and packs all our food, plus we go through them for any needed gear we don't already have. We all take turns cooking, one day on, two days off, leaving plenty of opportunity for creative off-river activities whether in a tent or up a trail!

But I had a companion lined up for a trip once who I thought wasn't taken until her boyfriend called me, quite irate, just a few days before the trip started. Don't want to go through that again!

Interesting thread you all have there...
Coming from a wallet in the back pocket of her Levi's, motorcycle riding tomboy, I'd have to say that attraction is in the eye of the beholder. I am very independent, and that in itself is a turn off to a lot of men, I don't think it is just the short hair and the adventurous personality. But hey, even this tomboy knows how to glam it up when the occasion arises. I personally don't care whether or not a man wants to date a tomboy, or not. Anyone that refuses to get to know someone based on looks alone is just stupid, and probably missing out on many interesting opportunities! To each his own!

Hells, yes, I'd date a tomboy!

Although I don't have a single "type" I'm interested in, I'd have to say that petite, thin, or athletic tomboys probably top my list & generally = RAWR! for me in a big, big way. The vast majority of the girly-girl Barbie clones of the world just don't do it for me & never really did. When I was younger & was just starting to actually pay attention to girls, the short-haired tomboy who did her best to knock the ball out of the park during Phys Ed was waaay hotter to me than the wannabe supermodel who couldn't even be bothered trying to swing the bat for fear of chipping a nail. Years later, I still don't feel that a short haircut & a dislike of flowery dresses negatively affects a woman's femininity in any way. If she watches sports (or better yet, plays them), drops the odd F-bomb, & likes a beer once in a while, I'm putty in her hands!

I might take the attraction a bit too far, though 'cause I've actually found myself attracted to enough short-haired lesbians over the years that I've been known to joke about being a dyke trapped in a man's body. I'm not talking about the butchy ones sporting lumberjack shirts, crewcuts & belt buckles bigger than my head, mind you, but still...

farting: well, we are all human....but some of us do have some class.

burping: been known to!

tooling with cars: change my own oil and can change a flat tire.....but the rest I leave up to my mechanic!

mudding: My 4 X 4 or yours?

hunting: I've bagged 1 buck and 2 does.....but these days I prefer you kill it......I'll cook it.

fishing: Got my own gear and even bait my own hook! I get a bit "girly" when it comes to cleaning them tho.

drinking beer:not a beer girl.....but I can drink whiskey straight up with the best of 'em!

attractive: in the eye of the beholder, but I definately don't look like a boy!
and I'm told I look just as sexy in my black mini as I do my bib overalls!

I also mow my own yard, trim my own trees, dug my own pond, can plaster a wall, lay tile and just recaulked the tub and put in a new ceiling light. Why? I'm single and I've taught myself how to take care of my things!

I work out... yes, with heavy weights... I'm not bad with a gun... I can beat many men at a game of pool... Ive had my own motorcycle for 30 years.... I luurrrv rum... I'm a volunteer firefighter.... Ive ridden and worked with horses since i was a child, And lots of the other stuff the ladies before me mentioned... BUT... I can turn every single male head when i walk into a room when i get dressed up.. And when i was single i certainly didn't lack for quality male attention... So i guess a lot of men do like a tomboy. I haven't had any complaints..

I've worked with quite a few women in construction that don't wear make up on a regular basis, like to play sports instead of just watching and they are quite feminine. Certainly would not mistaken them for men at all.

These women come with the benefit that they are not the"stereotypical princess" that can't change the tires on a car. They also don't need a man to pay for anything to feel like they are being treated like a woman, as their egos are quite healthy. So certainly no complaint from them that men are paid more than women because they had the common sense to take the job that paid more that the men were doing.

Now, nothing against the stereotypical princess.
They are just not my cup of tea.
And yes, I know that ALL women who wear make up and become a secretary do not fall into the princess category or are unable to change the tires on a car.
So for those who are looking to start a flame war go for counselling,
as my intention is not to slam, insult or bash the stereotypical woman....
I'm just stating my personal preference like we ALL do on these forums

Tomboys are really the only feminine women left. The thing that separates a tomboy from other girls is that she enjoys more active recreation. As a result, her playmates tend to be boys. She grows up dealing with them and she knows what makes them tick. Other girls spend their time gossiping and being cruel to each other. Tomboys learn to cooperate and negotiate.

Later in life, they know men. They know what motivates them and how to be supportive. Other women are clueless. The ones who claim to "think like a man", don't know the first thing about men. A tomboy will put them to shame every time.
