I think there is a Harley group for old timers that ride from the assisted living home to the VFW bar every Friday........

Oh wait......that is my Harley group.......never mind......

Ever Metro Area has numerous Singles Groups sometimes divided by age group. I have had experience with these group in recent years and most are quite dignified and often down right fun.

Do a search for local Singles Groups. They most often have monthly get togethers, dances, parties, etc.

Quite frankly I find these Singles Gatherings to be a much better way to met eligible others.

One Word --- Volunteer. I do

Try any Charitable outfit - go see what goes on there.

I find that Habitat for Humanity and especially their retail outlet - ReSTORE to be very good for meeting people of al backgrounds. And - it is a great experience in all regards.

Well...I would attend, but they will not let me out of the nursing home after 8pm on weekends and 6pm week days.......

Pof has not quite made it up to speed for all those of us that need doctors available at receptions, have modified areas, and wheelchair accessibility to all parts of the activities and the women too......

Guess I will just have to hop on my Harley and try on me own.......

Just my opinion......

Although this thread was started a long time ago, it seems the same thing applies for people these days--the last two posters--I have to agree with the premise of this thread. I live in a small town, nothing much to do--a few activities for kids (usually only tiny tots, nothing for teens or above age 12) and a senior citizens center with activities for people over 65 (age requirement applies evidently). I am only 51 and don't want to go to clubs/bars (not there are a lot of them here) and don't want to go out with 70+ men from the senior center (they do have a new class-Mah Jong--wow!!)

I am active with groups I am interested in (at least as much as possible as mostly they are groups for the wealthy "ladies who lunch" crowd--junior service league types, not real women who work and struggle to pay bills, etc.). But, most of the groups that do exist are women--not too many men except the shriners clubs.

I have about given up--small town life stinks!

AutumnWind, I live in a capital city, and it isn't much better for singles 50+ here, either. It's a conservative area, and people look at you very oddly if you aren't married or cohabitating......

And I ca really relate to what you said about the "ladies who lunch" crowd.....I sure don't fit in with them, becaue I, like you, am a "working woman"....

And I don't "do" bars.....didn't at 25, won't at 55........

Life in a conservative area stinks, too!

I've checked out meetup.com as well ... my dog and I are attending our first meeting tomorrow ... it was a Pug group but they have decided to invite some of their more furry friends as well so my Pomeranian and I will check it out ...

other than that, there wasn't much on meetup.com for this rural area ... there was a chess club that sounded interesting ... what I'd really LIKE is a mystery club ...

I used to belong to GAP ... Grandparents as Parents ... predictably, I was the only SINGLE GAP! met a lot of nice married folks, tho!

I tried the Catholic Singles dances ... not my cup of tea ...

there are a lot of groups that use the senior center ... not necessarily just seniors ... I forgot to attend a group today that meets there once a month ... GadAbouts ... a travel club ... they invite all ages ... a friend and I have gone on 2 trips with them so far and they've been great fun ... on one trip, we set sail on a couple of "antique" tall ships for 3-hour tours of the harbor ... on another trip, I met a couple who met online when he was in his early 70s and she in her mid-60s ... he emigrated from Canada, they got married and are still enthralled with each other 5 years later!

there are 2 different dance groups who meet at the senior center ... one is "senior" ... the other is REALLY SENIOR! (my parents ages!)

there's a social club around here called Fresno Friends but I'm not sure how active they still are ... in the late '80s and early '90s they were great fun ... dances, dinners, parties, hiking ...

I've technically joined a hiking, biking, skiing club ... but haven't attended a function lately ...

ya gotta search ...

i ran a tri-state one at my home back east years ago, in my early 40's. there are many here, but i tend to go to special interest social groups for all ages. go onto meetup dot com, check out what they have and use their tools to start one . i am amazed at how many new people i meet, as i join each new group. you can then advertise in other ways as well to support your meetup, knowing it takes time to build up.

way back, i tried to seek others to join me in starting a local event from pof, but got no responses. probably because there aren't enough people from pof, in this area, in a datable age bracket, and there is so much else going on. others, in other areas, have had successful meetup groups from here as well. i also host a few interest groups in my place, but i don't do the meetup organizing, as it takes some computer skills. i'm better in the hosting and feeding department. back east, i had a biker roomate who oversaw who came to my parties. often there were a good 75 people! i didn't allow drinking and got a "quality" crowd. the ages back then were 30-5o, w/o advertising by age.

ps town is not enough. you have to go at least countywide. if rural, as i was, you'd be amazed at how far people will travel. also try to get sponsors to help recruit and carpool in areas further away.

I live in a very small town. There are activities for kids up until about age 12, then nothing. Then there are activities for those 65 and over--one senior citizen center, has bingo, 5:00 pm dinners ($3.00 type), a few church singles (65 plus) groups. That's it. I volunteer but it's with a domestic violence task force--mostly women. Also, I don't get off work until after 5 pm so those senior citizen center dinners are out! LOL

I'm only 52--too young for pot holder making classes, too old for college-town bars/clubs. Otherwise, Wal-Mart is pretty popular on weekends, at least before 10:30 pm--after that, they lock all but one door and there's a deputy guarding that door--I mean, only bad criminal types are out after 10:oo pm on Saturday nights!!!! A date and I actually got run out of the parking lot of the local DQ at 9:30 Saturday night. Not exactly a dating mecca!

Nothing here. Unless, just maybe, you go to one of the 'right' churches. I don't.

There are alternatives to a bingo or pot holder classes.
Last night, I went to my local camera club meeting. Out of 120 people, at least one third of them were over 60. More men than women, though.

We had to fill out a questionnaire. One of the questions on the form was INTERESTS. I was going to fill in "women", but the helpful fellow who assisted me in filling out the form, tactfully suggested that I could leave that field empty.

There is nothing like that here. The few possibilities are a couple of skanky bars with hardcore drinkers, and a mini casino. The bars close what I'd consider early, and I'm about 2 generations beyond the people I've seen through the windows and going through the doors. The casino closes early. I don't gamble, and the noise and flashing lights give me a headache. The very few restaurants tend to open at 4 AM fort he breakfast crowd, and close at 3 or 4 PM. No nightlife, no classes of any kind. There isn't even a pizza delivery place. You who all live in more urban areas or are still able to drive just don't get what it's like.

after I wrote my "upbeat" comment in May ... I haven't been able to participate in anything else where I met people even NEAR my age group ...

I've gone to one of those 2 seniors dances a couple of times and have met MAYBE three men NEAR my age ... ok, they were "only" 10-20 years older than I am! my Pomeranian has been too ill to meet up with the Pug group!

I DID go to my high school class reunion ... which was UNbelievably Great Fun! I wish they held them annually! Facebook has been fun, too ... catching up with a lot of folks from my past ...

"when in doubt, do the right thing!" now ... if I only knew what the "right" thing to do ... IS ... I'd do it!

In my view of it: any place that *has* a Wal-Mart is NOT a small town. . . . I'm about an hour and a half from the nearest Wal-Mart, and it's in a different state, lol!

I say it again: bless the internets. . . .

I probably would have filled in the answer with "women". It might get you noticed!!!

I presume, you meant "photographing women". That could really open a can of worms. Next thing they will ask - what type of photography? I have such a feeling that they could take an exception to my telephoto and close-up lenses.

Hmm. There's one here, but it's known locally as 'the world's smallest' and it is small. It's like comparing Costco with a 7-11 or a Qwik Stop. A bit of this, a bit of that. One of some things, none of most things. But it is open 24/7. But with the exception of the pharnacy (which is not open 24/7), there's more choice at the local Dollar Store.

about 1990 or so, there were many active "Adapt" groups in California ... (divorce adjustment group) ...

and THAT group was fun ... we'd have a meeting where we'd discuss whatever book we were studying ... then break out into separate study groups ... then go out to dinner, coffee, dessert ... whatever ... we had parties at least monthly, sometimes more often ... periodically, we'd meet with one or more of the other Adapt groups, sometimes at retreats in the mountains ... the club I went to joined another Adapt group and we all went dancing at least once a week, sometimes more often ... very social group ...

it was very useful for those early stages of separation from a marriage you'd THOT would last forever and you're at lost places and don't know what to do, how to act, where to turn, etc. it provided healthy sounding boards so we wouldn't drive our families and friends nuts, listing to all of our whining and complaining about the ex and how angry, sad or whatever, we were!

fortunately, I "adapted" and moved on ... as did most of the members ... I think "Adapt" sadly did not survive the 90s!

Columbus has a singles square dance club ... which is mostly older singles at this point ... not too many young people there. We have a lot of fun. Tomorrow one of the members is throwing a wiener roast at her house and some of us are going to be taking our musical instruments with us (guitars, banjo, karaoke discs) and we'll be putting on some entertainment for our fellow dancers.

There's also a club that sponsors regular dances for the older crowd and then of course there are a few swing dance clubs too. I've been to all of them and there are primarily older folks there although we get folks in their late 20's or early 30's as well.

For me, most of the places I go to sing at are also well attended by the older crowd, but there are enough of the younger crowd there that it makes for a diverse display of music being sung.

they do, but i never really identified with purely senior centers. most of my close friends were always a good 20 years younger and only recently am i finding women my "age". i found a woman in her late 60's as a friend, but she dates men way way younger and indeed is our oldest in the group. my man friend is six years younger.

here we have many venues and many groups, but the best place to start is meetup dot com. you can join existing groups or start your own. we go by interests more so than age. most of the people in our groups range from 40 and up. majority in their 50's, but some younger ones starting to join in because they are tired of the drinking/pot scene at the university and like our activities--thus, we are kind of like "family".

the older men mid sixties and up, seem to join hiking groups more so than social or dancing groups. some of them also join film and classical music groups. my guy, 56 (I'm 62) does not do much dancing short of country-- but has made an exception for me, as it is my total passion and lifesaver to dance kind of funky style. My older female friend is a swing dancer, so I guess it all depends on your emotional, spiritual, intellectual and physical energy levels. i cannot hike as i have lymes, but i can dance. just sit down more than i used to do with mini rests, in between dances :)

Dear pinkpout:

Look this up in your city: meetup.com. It is a WORLD WIDE free to join website.
Whether you want to meet someone with similar likes such as bicycling, hiking, kayaking, board or video games, yoga, knitting or like me- dinner, dancing, listening to a band..
My friends turn up "already made plans for the weekend" or not wanting to go out so I wanted to find people like minded so I could have someplace to meet and enjoy a night out. My meetup groups do wine tastings, meet at different places for dinner, meet at the Sand Gnats (local) baseball game. Something different every time. No demands to attend every event- always welcome whenever you wish to attend. Casual, laid back, no pressure. Ahhh!

Here in Nevada, the older singles guys are in Senior Citizen Center the whole day, from 8.00 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. they are only enterested on food, and listening to their own voice of complain ,they even complain why I am laughing ,what am I happy for??????? working as a volunteer, around them makes me depress so I quit......... I change my preference on liking older men, now I like younger guys they are more fun and nice...

Pardon me, I am going to the Football game............................................
