the way we dress for that first meet should reflect how we dress every day.


Bikehikenski....I agree, but why not try to look our best every day? Or at least every day that we leave home? From what I see in the POF profiles and read on the forums, a lot of guys, many women too, seem to have the "love me as I am, no matter how unattractive I allow myself to be" approach....and then wonder why people aren't attracted to them.

Since we are all different and all have strengths & weaknesses, positives and negatives -why not at least make an effort to be the best that we can be, each in our own unique way. It seems to me that a lot of people are unwilling or afraid to make the effort...I know that I was for a while but am much happier now being "back on track". None of us know what lies ahead or for how long, so let's make the best of whatever we have yet to experience. Seems like more than a few people need a gentle push, or maybe a swift kick, to get themselves out of the rut they've settled into.

Jeans and a t-shirt or sweats, something comfy, gets my attention. A man in a suit will not attract me, I'm not going to wearing a dress or skirt so give me a man in comfy clothes.

I guess i'm a little suprised by the tee Shirts being exceptable. Personally i only wear one when I'm working in the yard or painting.


I agree with you Artz, on the t-shirts, especially white t-shirts. I had to look back and make sure this was really the Over 45 forum. I could not imagine going on a date, especially first date , in any kind of t-shirt. I have been on a lot on dates that I met online, usually meet at a casual restaurant(Red Lobster, Applebees, etc)...most of my dates have been in their forties. I always wear a polo shirt and khakis in nice weather, long sleeve shirt and maybe a leather jacket in cool weather. Belt and shoes always match. Out of approximately 25 first meets, only one declined a second date, and I don't think clothes were the issue there. I have usually been complimented on my appearance, and I certainly don't consider myself a fashion plate. And I don't wear expensive clothes.

So, guys, go ahead and wear those tee shirts if you want to. The only tee I will wear will be underneath my other shirt in cool weather.

As far as boxers or briefs, I have never met a woman that preferred briefs. Nice, soft cotton, colorful boxers for me.

Hey Artz here in the NYC area tons of us guys wear $200 jeans and $150 shirts - it is all about fashion here - just part of the big city life as oppossed to the boonies of Utah where you live


Well, funguy, you just keep your smarta$$ and $200 jeans in NYC. I will stay out here in the boonies, wearing my $40 jeans, and the women are just as fine as any in NYC. And it doesn't take $200 jeans to impress them.

When dating the women I have met online, the discussion usually gets around to funny previous dates. One woman got a good laugh telling me about one of her dates. A guy in his fifties, drives up in his Mercedes, and he is wearing a Harley tee shirt, extremely baggy shorts, and RED tennis shoes.

They were meeting at a fairly nice restaurant. Other than the attire, he seemed like a pretty decent guy, and he keeps calling for a second date. She finally decides to give him a second chance, figuring he would take a cue from the was she was dressed on the first date. He shows up for the second date and guess what he is wearing....the exact same outfit he had on the first time!!! Needless to say, that was their last date.

If you want some one to love you just the way you are - dress the way you normally would for the occassion and what you're comfortable in.

and for the hope it's not him;;;needs a shower guy!!!
Please guys take a shower before a date..haha
Spandex is not a great impression..
unless on a football player..
and does anyone acually have a loud plaid jacket ??..
Leave the jacket at goodwill..

I like crisp jeans and polished boots.. with a crisp shirt. The great thing about jeans is that you can wear a jacket with them.. to dress them up a little.. Don't forget a clean hair cut.. small amount of after shave.. The idea is to look put together... and that will create an impression on a woman that you care enough to dress for her. You want to look neat but casual.

If I were your girlfriend I'd go shopping with you ( I love shopping with a man for clothes because my dad used to take me shopping with him when I was a little girl)... but since I am not.. I think you should go to a good clothing store and spend a little money on yourself.. get yourself some shoes, couple of pairs of pants and shirts.. maybe even a jacket.. but let the guys who work there dress you a little..and help you get together a few outfits.. mix and match ..

You can dress youthful without looking foolish.. you just want to look updated.

Where I live now the standard fare is dockers and golf shirts.. that is ok.. but I am from Texas and a man in a good pair of jeans, with polished ropers, and a crisp shirt.. is a major turn on for me..

The other night my date wore a button down shirt with his jeans and a camel colored suede windbreaker style jacket with boots... he looked casual but put together.. I wanted to jump his bones..!!!

P. S. don't wear the cheap aftershave.. women don't like Ole Spice.. ok??? invest in a good aftershave.. I prefer Cool Water or my new one is Paul Sebastian. The last time my date wore that I slept with my blouse under my pillow for a week because his after shave or cologne was on my blouse it smelled so good and reminded me of him.. Oh, also don't forget to be sensitive to allergies. Some ladies may find cologne or after shave a little over powering so either go very very light on the stuff or don't wear it till you find out.

Jeans or casual slacks are all right if they fit, have no holes or stains and do not look like something you would wear to work on your car or dig a ditch in. Your pants should be the appropriate length – no high waters or dragging the ground. If you’re sagging, you’re going to be alone. A lot. Same thing goes for sweat pants.

Shorts? On a date? Maybe if we’ve been dating awhile and we are going on a picnic, otherwise please do not make me look at your hairy legs. I promise to shave mine and return that favor.

A shirt with a collar! It too should be clean and have no holes or stains. Extra credit of it is neatly pressed. You lose points for wearing a t-shirt. You lose more points if it has holes, stains, cut-off sleeves or some weird slogan on it. I’ll pretend I don’t know you if the slogan is pornographic or obscene.

Be clean and well-groomed. Get a haircut, go to a real barber and have him trim up everything that needs trimming (you know what I mean). Wash your hands - including cleaning the grease out from under your nails! Do you really want us worrying that our blouse will get stained if you touch us? No cologne is preferred, unless you know that your date does not have perfume allergies. Ladies should keep this one in mind as well. I’ve had to cut dates short simply because I could not breathe! Nothing is a bigger buzz kill than asking your date to go back home and bathe.

Jackets are great. Men look so handsome in a jacket and tie. I realize that a tie is most likely overkill for the average date scenario, but if you want to impress me, dress like you mean it!

Shoes, belt, jacket (outerwear) should all be clean, polished if appropriate. Don’t ruin all your effort by tossing a crappy dirty coat over it. If you want to wear your leather jacket and it has offensive logos or patches on it, maybe you should save that one for a later date?

If any member of the cast of ‘Welcome Back, Kotter’ wore the article of clothing you are considering, do not wear it now. That includes your haircut.

Too much bling reminds us of those cheesy 70s-era disco guys. Leave it at home. Same for the ginormous belt buckle. Especially if it has your name on it. MOST especially if your name is ‘Dick’.

Me too....I have had someone walk by and have caught a "whiff" of his cologne....made me just want to "get in a little closer" haha

There was a commerical many years ago where the lady says, "my man wears Englih Leather or nothing at all".....thats how I feel about Calvin or Velocity.

Hmmmm does this mean I can't wear my tobacco sack bikini? lol There may be more expensive places to shop for men, but I like the Men's Wearhouse clothes, but that's mostly dressy and no jeans, still if you're gonna wear a suit, check them out guys.

it's hard to get clothes on my manfriend. not that this doesn't have it's benefits, lol. he has this thing about hawaiian shirts! him and a whole lot of guys around here. he also likes free t shirts with advertising on them. now, i am happy if they are blue to match his eyes!

i guess if you love someone, you try not to notice. but, in all fairness, after he pulled out the 60's neru jacket to go to a play, he did let me get him some dress up clothes for x-mas. but i also got him what "he" wanted--tools, alongside, a nice washable suede jacket and some nice shirts and pants. picking them out was sheer hell, but we did luck out with a good gay saleman helping us fit him. still , for the most part, they hang in his closet. there seems to be an endless supply of those free t shirts though.

let's face it, coming from the corporate east coast world, i practically live in jeans now. it takes adjusting, but they are a lot more comfortable. back east, i hardly ever wore pants. from suits to dresses to gowns. my current man would never recognize the "old me". these guyguys! they just get under your skin, no matter how many of the hawaiian shirts. and he sure has good dance moves in those t shirts!

PLEASE no sharks tooth on a leather "chain" ugh ...Had a date with a guy awhile back and he had one ...it was so uglyand stupid looking I couldn't focus on anything he was saying

I am so glad no one said to dress like a hip hop star, that is my pet peeve. To be fair, dressing like a Italian used cars saleman with a cigar in his hand gets on my nerves too. And then don't forget aboout men who wear those butt tight short is just sick.

I'm still wearing tshirts and jeans, like I was 40 years ago. They still sell tshirts, and they still sell jeans, right? Okay, the jeans I wear are a bit more "relaxed fit" than they used to be. And,okay, sometimes I wear the polo-style shirts. But basically the same as I always have.

Probably would wear a polo shirt for the first date.
