For I have seen the dead..although they are not truly dead
Merely appearances like compacted smoke
Filling an area alongside my bed or whizzing past me as I lay at the foot of the steps comforting the dogs who were whimpering
I do not know who those appearances were before but I do know of spirits passing and stopping to visit before moving on
I also know of grandparents and parent offering assurances to me
I also know of the numerous being feed medications in the sustaining of "life" and the "dead" that you speak of regarding the lack of care received
I pulled this site up to the top as I miss having the assortment of folk that came to share on this site. Hope to hear, again, from you Donna

miss you
I woke up this moring
and then I raised
I think Ill get dressed and
head outside
Hey Honey I miss you
like the moring dew
I looked out I think the rain ended
And I dont think I
can live without you
I walked out side and I
can feel the sun on my face
Hey babe dont you want
to come over to my place
I woke up tismoring
and then I raised
I thought, Gee I wish you
was here by my side
because your lips are as
moist as the moring dew
And your love holds on to me
like the rain, after
its gone and went throght

Alef
Posted: 11/20/2008 7:25:03 AM
My people were reborn
in the letter Alef
which gave birth to bet,
gimmel, daled...

Alef was A-dam,
made of adamah
which is earth.
Bet was ben-Adam
“son of Adam,” son of man,
that is, human..

My people are of earth
and were reborn
after Auschwitz, Buchenwald,
Chelmno, Dachau, &c.,
&c.,&c.,&c.,
&c.,
the whole alphabet
of calculated human bestiality.

Reborn, not so much when they were returned
to Eretz Israel, the “land of Israel,” the earth
of Israel, but when they unearthed the Hebrew tongue
from its 2,000 year sleep,
and found their beloved Alef
once again!

AT THE CANCER CLINIC: born from his own experience, fighting cancer

She is being helped toward the open door
that leads to the examining rooms
by two young women I take to be her sisters.
Each bends to the weight of an arm
and steps with the straight, tough bearing
of courage. At what must seem to be
a great distance, a nurse holds the door,
smiling and calling encouragement.
How patient she is in the crisp white sails
of her clothes. The sick woman
peers from under her funny knit cap
to watch each foot swing scuffing forward
and take its turn under her weight.
There is no restlessness or impatience
or anger anywhere in sight. Grace
fills the clean mold of this moment
and all the shuffling magazines grow still.

Ted Kooser

Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore.
A ship at my side spreads her white
sails to the morning breeze and starts
for the blue ocean.
She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until at length
she hangs like a speck of white cloud
just where the sea and sky come
to mingle with each other.
Then, someone at my side says;
"There, she is gone!"

"Gone where?"
Gone from my sight. That is all.
She is just as large in mast and hull
and spar as she was when she left my side
and she is just as able to bear her
load of living freight to her destined port.
Her diminished size is in me, not in her.
And just at the moment when someone
at my side says, "There, she is gone!"
There are other eyes watching her coming,
and other voices ready to take up the glad
shout;
"Here she comes!"

And that is dying.

By Henry Van Dyke, a 19th Century clergyman, educator, poet, and religious writer.

Oh, Brizo, did you know that she loved Ted Kouser? That I downloaded every one of his poems I could find and sent them to her one by one in the daily emails she and I used to exchange!

How did you die, Donna?
How did so much life,
love, wit, aspiration,
avidness to read
and learn and communicate
come to such a screeching halt?

Those crazed, miscued cells
just chewed you up
sinew by ligament by bone
burrowing, tunnelling, attacking
head on. Those crazy fu*kers,
mindless, Godless, with no agenda
other than multiply, destroy and
multiply, they nickle-&-dimed you
out of the life
that at one time had been a veritable
Fort Knox,
a treasury from which you dispensed
love and wisdom to all
who came and asked or
didn’t even ask
but you sensed their need

The only meaning
of this goddamned
so-called “poem”
is that you will never see it

Jer I would like to say I hope she does read it because it was written from the heart by your loss of a friend. I remember looking forward to any poem Donna wrote over on Old Souls - it was always such an inspiration. None of us really know what happens when you die - let us hope that peace flies.

well, I would suggest the title of her thread, Between Worlds indicates that Donna herself thinks there is more than one, and so I'm thinking she is headed to the better one...

I love Ted Kooser too, the least pretentious poet I've ever read. Good looking in a rugged way, too...

I've been so hungry for contact ever since I got the news. I wrote this a short while ago but don't think/know if it's complete:

Now, with the loss of your voice
I seek out a hundred other voices
to equal your sweetness,
your quiet strength,
your almost religious faith
in reason...

Donna, the day before
Posted: 2/16/2009 5:33:44 PM
A silence settles back
over the day just past, a day
I spent talking, to everyone within reach,
of my grief over the imminent death
of my friend. I talked
and talked
and everyone was sympathetic

but my grief was not assuaged

and my words and theirs
were swallowed up by the silence
encroaching from later on

So sorry to hear of this. I will gladly place this here, for it rang in my mind when she left it here in her thread! Amazing and absolutely Beautiful!

~ Be~

This between-space...
This breath between steps...
shall offer thee a window on what has gone before.

Look back.
Sweep thine eyes over the greenness of the valley,
the deep forest darkness that has sheltered thee,
the watery expanse that has carried thee here.
Cast your glance across the breadth of experience
that is you.

This between-space...
This warm and quiet embrace...
shall offer thee a vision of the future.

Look beyond and remember
what has not yet come to be.
Take me in your arms.
Spin me around the back of the moon.
Feel the tingling of stardust pass thee by
as we dance on a comet's trail,
skirting along the edge of quantum depths,
dipping and gliding through the shadows
of planets not yet born.
Take my hand...come with me beyond the universe...
back to where we have yet to begin.

But soft....
This between-space exists here for you...
All that you need is here.

Be here.
Be in this between-space....
Be...

?where is my love?

if heaven can let go doves, then - it does!

But they always fly back above!

If heaven can spill her diamonds to glisten on shorelines underneath shells of the sandiest ocean, then she does!

But diamonds are always picked up and then mounted, worn, hidden, or stolen.

How about that polished one.

We suddenly SEE no more?

If smiles were meant to last, then our teeth might forever gleam.
But decay and gingivitis sets in...

We are mummies.
We are pharoahs without all the red-tape (I mean white tape, I mean duct tape) I mean Duck Tape!

We are
Calling

Out

A name.

A meme.

A
Memory.

Research.
Watch her flee!

The body
Could no
Longer

Carry me, Jerry...

Dear Seanymphriding &c. I can't cut & paste via this browser but that is such a glorious, loving poem! Via another browser I will cut it plus some of Donna's poem to add to a compilation I'm making for her sister and mother.

Vivid

I wander alone....
with thoughts of you following my every step.

Jade memories of what we once were
A deepness of shade and shadow that blankets the forest.
I draw the dark cloak around me,
covering shoulders chilled by the disappearance
of the evening sun.

Crimson flashes of passion spent
Tinkling down to earth in handfuls of rubies....
sparkling where the moonlight grasps a faceted piece of magic.
I gather them in the folds of my skirt
and set my soft lips upon each one
before placing them gently
in my pocket.

Indigo blue the night sky shines....
glittering star diamonds sprinkled.
I reach up and pull down the heavens,
fold it in neat quarters, and tuck it into my belt....

And in sleep I dream of you
....clothed in vivid colours.

.

I remember the night that I first read this poem of Donna's and how the imagery struck a chord inside me. It has been a journey wandering back and reading all she has left as a gift to the pond and its many writers. It was well worth it to sift back in time and realize just how remarkable this woman was.

Talking with Donna
Posted: 2/19/2009 1:16:22 PM
You may talk with hundreds
and still feel unheard,
unassuaged, or

you can talk with one
and feel as if hundreds
have been listening attentively
storming love your way

Wonderful recollection, Autumn!

I've compiled a collection of Donna's poems that were posted here, but at something like 20 plus pages it would be too long to send as a PM. If anyone would like a copy, they should PM me their email address and whether they'd prefer the attachment in Words 6.0/7.0 for Windows or in rtf (Rich Text Format).

Talking with Donna
Posted: 2/23/2009 5:41:13 PM
ravin asked me to post this for her.....

What do we come here for
if not to express
as eloquently as we dare
just who we are?

What do we come here for
if not to address
our souls yearning to share
what we have learned so far?

For what reason are we here
if not to impress,
to all the world declare
set our highest bar?

It is why we are.
Our soul’s success
is being fully aware
of shining our brightest star.

She did.

The heavens will have even better poetry to download to us with her there....

Sometimes, a poem is not enough.
Breakfast, lunch, supper
are not enough.
Deeply treasured contacts
with good and loving friends
are not altogether good enough,

but one last post-mortem
conversation with you
would be enough

to last until I longed
for just one more

Between world

As the sun is genlty rising
A new dawn awakes
But the clouds are quickly circling
Over my heart as it slowly breaks

The birds are singing softly
But my heart is icy cold
The children outside are playing
My sanity I try to hold

I know I have to move on
with each and every new day
Lost alone and confused
Why is it again you didnt stay?

Remembering the times
When I tasted your lips
The protective embrace
Your sweet sweet kiss

In my world
you were the air that I breathe
The fire in my heart
My reason to live

Did I imagine it
Or am I blind to you still
I hope you will return to me
Tho I dont think you will

Im stuck in between
Two worlds, dont belong
Frozen in time
I just cant move on

Thoughts of you
Are filling my head
As I rise to the morning
Try to get out of bed

Where are you now
Do you miss me sometimes
The answers to my questions
I know I wont find

A new world is waiting
If I could just sieze the day
Move on from the old world
Where I was betrayed

Where will it take me
What course will there be
When in this new world
there is only just me
