Spinal tap was first called "The Originals" but then found out there was a skiffle group on the East Side, that had that name. Then they became the Thamesmen. They heard that the band called "The Originals" had eventually broken up, so they were going to call themselves "The New Originals" but then decided on the name Spinal Tap instead.

The New Originals.

Some bands have their name chosen for them. The Beach Boys were originally called the Pendletones, after a brand of shirts surfers wore back then. When they were on the Candix label the labels owner didnt like the name so after playing with names they came up with the Beach Boys. The Beach Boys themselves didnt know this until their first single "Surfin'" came out and it read "Beach Boys".

The Turtles were originally a surf group called The Challengers. When they signed to White Whale again the record company picked the name. They guys in the Turtles hated the name at first until the record label owners explained to them that its an animal name and people might think that they're British.

The Searchers got their name from the John Ford western.

Other bands who got titles from movies

Faster pussycat
Mudhoney

Both bands took their name from two Russ Meyer films

There is a punk band out of Chicago called the Baseball Furries. Their name came from one of the gangs in that film the Warriors.

commodores chose their name by flipping through a dictionary and stopping randomly on a page and blindly putting a finger on a word.

rush was going to be called 'hush.' then alex's little brother walked in and said 'why don't you call yourself rush?"

Tragically Hip got their name from a Mike Nesmith (of the Monkees) produced video, called Elephant Parts (1981).

Nesmith got the phrase from a Carolyn Mas song called He`s So Cool.

Alice Cooper came about as a little joke. Vincent Furnier thought it would be funny to give his band an "innocent" title, and have some old lady pick up the album (thinking it was jazz or something), just to discover that it was hard rock. I remember him saying something to that effect in an interview.

Pink Floyd - named by Syd Barrett after two obscure bluesmen: Pink Anderson & Floyd Council.

the Doors - named after a book called "The Doors of Perception" a favorite of Jim Morrison.

Doobie Brothers - Pat said in an interview on 20/20 years ago that they were all sitting around smoking these funny little cigarettes and the name just kinda popped into their heads.

Butthole Surfers - Gibby Haynes said once in an interview they were tripping heavily and were conversing about wanting to do the very act the name implied, but the story has changed several times over the years.

Mountain - named after the girth of their frontman, Leslie West and also due to the fact their sound was as big as one at times.

Don't know if this one is a fact or not but heard it a long time ago and it sounded real good:

Little Feat - named due to Lowell Goerge's shoe size.

The Ramones: Dee Dee Ramone was inspired from Paul McCartney who used the name Paul Ramon as an alias.

Malcolm McLaren saw the words Sex Pistols in graffiti in New York City and thought it described a better looking assassin.

I havent heard them but there is a band called fallout boy which takes its name from the cartoon the Simpsons. Fallout boy is the name of Radioactive Man's sidekick.

The Bay City Rollers got their name by sticking a tack into a map.. it landed on Bay City MI. They later started calling themselves just "The Rollers" which made them not so popular in Bay City anymore.. lol

And it killed them because Bay City was the only place they were still popular when they did it.
