Aww that's sweet :) I'm sure that is why redheads don't realize it though...years of torment

Maybe the following has something to do with it, taking into consideration the different sensations of "touch" or "sensitivity" that some people have. For example, blondes have the finest hair of all and the most follicles, thus giving it a silky, smooth and soft feel.
Hair Density, Numbers of Hairs, Rate of growth
The average human scalp measures approximately 120 sq. inches (770 sq.cm).
The hair covering varies numerically according to hair colour and ethnicity.
Each strand of hair has a root and a shaft. The root and a small section of the shaft lie in the follicle, just below the surface of the scalp. At the bottom of each follicle, is a projection called the papilla, which contains the artery that nourishes the root. The papilla manufactures the keratin, or protein. As new cells form around it, the old cells fall away and die. These dead cells are gradually pushed up out of the follicle and become part of the hair shaft.
Hair grows at a rate of about 1-1.5cm per month, faster in summer than in winter and more at night than in the daytime. Hair is lubricated by the sebaceous glands or oil glands. The anagen phase is when a new hair is produced and lasts for about 4 years. At the catagen phase, the production of cells slows down considerably before stopping completely; this lasts for about 3-4 weeks.
Next comes the telogen phase when the hair follicle retracts and its base moves up towards the surface of the scalp. A new hair now grows regularly and expels the old one. Every hair follicle has an average of 25 cycles in its 4-year lifespan. If we constantly lose hair every few months on the same place, once the 25 cycles are up, no more hair will grow in that particular spot again.
Caucasian hair type.
Blonde 146000 hairs, diameter measuring 1/1500th - 1/500th in.
Black 110000 hairs, diameter measuring 1/400th - 1/250th in.
Brunettes 100000 hairs, diameter infinitely variable
Titian (Red 86000 hairs, diameter infinitely variable
Afro hair type: Colour is predominately black. Hairshafts are multi helixal with a wool-like character. Healthy individuals possess between 50000-110000 scalp hairs.
Mongolian (Asian) hair type: Possessed by the greatest numbers of people worldwide. Hairshafts are predominately straight. Colour is predominately black. Regional variations exist, but healthy individuals possess an estimated 80000-140000 scalp hairs.
Even though all of us may have hair that looks different, we have one thing in common, that is the structure of our hair. Each strand consists of three layers: cuticle, cortex and medulla.
The cuticle is the top layer of hair. Like the skin, it is made up of a protein called keratin. It is transparent but very strong. It is layered fish-like scales and helps the cuticle protect the next layer. These scales can have as many as 7 overlapping strata, or as few as 3, bound together with a putty like substance. The cuticle reflects light, giving the hair its luster. If the cuticle is damaged, hair is dull and lacks luster.
The cortex is the thickest part of the hair strands and makes up more than 75% of the hair, providing strength and elasticity. In addition to determining the hair's texture, it's contains pigment granules that determine the color of our hair. Coarse hair contains more cortex and less cuticle than fine hair. The medulla is at the center of the hair. However very little is known about the biological function of this layer.
What does that say about people that prefer red heads ? You decide, but in general, red heads generally have the most "coarse" hair of all.
Personally speaking, I find that when I have the hair of a red head in contact with my skin it causes irritation, but then I can't wear wool either !

My hair is fine and soft; everyone in my families is, but i do agree and notice that most redheads is more towards the coarse side of things. Hmm....interesting Thanks for sharing

My big bro has like baby hair, my sister really nice and thick, and mine is somewhere in the middle.
Dr. Phil had a show on people that have physical reactions (like hives and itching) to people and it turns out it is all in their head.

Very interesting. We have learned more about hair then anything else on this site.
I have very thick hair and not because it's course. I just have many hair folicles on my head. Every hair dresser comments on it, then curses under their breath if they have to wash and style it. It's what is known in the trades as heavy hair. They tell me I have enough hair for 2 people.

In my family, there is at least one person, usually more, in each generation that has red hair. Both of my kids have red hair, my dad and one of his brothers as well as thier mother are redheads and.....well you get the point.
I have very dark red hair. No carrot-top, strawberry blonde or auburn. I think there are too many shades of red to be able to put them into only those 3 catagories. I don't fit into any of them.
As for the kind of attention I got when I was young from other kids....not always so nice. I think they were just jealous. They only wished they looked as good as a redhead.

Genetically there are only 3 recessive red haired genes. RR...Rh..rr.
Within each of those 3 catagories you have various shades. But there are only those 3 catagories.
RR...is the carrot top shades
Rh...is the auburn shades
rr...is the strawberry blonde shades
I have no idea how many shades are in each one of those catagories. Only your hairdresser knows for sure.

What is this pain between the sheets crap? Why do some people judge me on the color of my hair for pity sake???

I agree with the intense, fiery part, and yes, do not piss me off, but what is with the dirty, nasty part?

I know I am a late comer to this thread but I totally agree with you, dane x(way back near the start of this thread). Most stereotypes ARE founded in truth and this is No exception. Redheads are very much more prone to psychosis; from mild to bunny boiler! No joke. She wasn't called Pippy Long"stalking" for nothing... Though in all honesty, I found that redheads are chock- full of a distinct fury that manifests itself in the most intense, passionate, and flat-out enthusiastic intimacy a guy could ever have the fortune to limp away from. <img src=http://www.plentyoffish.com/smiles/icon_201.gif border=0>

I've found FAR more psychotic Dye-Job-Blondes than I EVER have redheads or any other color. Sad thing is the blondes tend towards stupid...as in "Artificial Lobotomy" stupid. I think the bleach melts their brains.
My favorites amongst redheads have always been the Female Marines. Those gals...lovely and Dangerous!!

Do you guys remember in the original Superman movie I think it was, there were criminals on Superman's home planet and Superman's dad, none other then Marlon Brando, banished these criminals into this glass plate thingy and launched them into outer space?
Well that's where redheads should go too!
Posted: 8/28/2008 6:22:24 AM
^^^^^gee- i dunno- while you were watching superman, THIS redhead was out running successful companies and retired at age 50 ...hmmm-

I personally think they should launch your ass out there....also just sayin'
I'm extremely hard to piss off but ignorance (and bad drivers) does it for me. If you have rude comments keep them to yourself.

Well, Cynderella, if you missed that boat then I would rather be on shore with you.

I can' t help wondering if guys who go for red hair in a big way are a little bit wierd. Personally I couldn't go for a bloke with red hair, and think that men who tell me they've had numerous girlfiends with red hair are just racking up the numbers. Is it kinky or something? I just don't get it.
Grew up hating my hair, standing out from the crowd, not being able to fade into the background, Got teased mercilessly, name calling etc.
These days it's faded a little, but I still stand out in the crowd, and now get guys who, it seems to me, want to date me so they can see if I have 'matching collar and cuffs'.

As a red headed woman I have asked guys what the big deal was and I get...exotic, sexy, challenging, different, and of course they want to see if we're better in bed than most women. I always get complements on my hair and sometimes just stares. As a child I wanted brown hair so I could fit in but I never felt ugly for it, Im the youngest in a family of 5 red head kids. Of course I got called names but it goes away as people get older and now people rarely even make the Little Orphan Annie connection. So I say embrace your beauty and individuality!

I hated my red hair when I was young. Lots of teasing and stuff but I'm OK with it now. I was the only one in our family who had it so my brother and sister tried their best to convince me I was adopted. What goes around comes around though. I have one daughter who is a blonde. My sisters first daughter has red hair and my brothers first son and last daughter have red hair,
