From Toronto to Montreal on Line Number 9

When I was very young my grandmother
Took me on a trip to see my cousins in Montreal
It was my first big adventure aboard a train
In those days the dining car was dressed
With white table cloths, china and silverware
Sparkling glasses and cloth napkins
I remember so vividly the feeling of movement
The gentle sway and clicking tracks
Comfortable seats with little trays
Pulled out for me to colour upon
Watching the scenery dash by
In the most amazing silent movie
From pastures green to small towns
All Aboard!
They treated you with warmth and courtesy
Smiling and teasing the little ones
Allowing you to go into those outside sections
Where the floor seemed to move
With the heartbeat of the flight
Along tracks
Through valleys and cities
And tunnels
The light flashing inside like a ride through
The fun house at a fair
My grandmother was a lovely lady
With a beautiful smile and gentle charm
We had to dress up to dine
Watching how we eat
To always pick up both knife and fork
At the same time
And when you were through
It was 5 o’clock where you placed them
On your plate
I can smell it still
A different smell
I can’t explain it in words
The bustling at the station
Smiling people
Bags being delivered down on the platform
To be picked up by a man who seemed to really love his job
Snuggled up and reading a good book
Or just napping as it swayed lulling you to sleep
These are memories I shall always keep
The beginning of adventure
Sometimes intrigue
The whistle blows and you are on your way.

PS I almost finished it with into the twilight zone LOL

The Train

In bed at night I hear a distant train,
Its rumble grows in volume as it nears.
My heart beats fast, I feel my muscles strain -
How strange, I think, for I've heard trains for years.
My window rattles with the shaking ground.
I feel as though my room has come alive;
The rumbling has become a wall of sound
Into whose solid depths I soon will dive.
Then all vibrations suddenly give way;
The air is still except a muffled hum.
What broke my peace has melted fast away,
The quiet's as before the train had come.
But now the dark is empty, cold, unknown,
I feel alone, so very much alone.

Marker lamps
End of train
Coal oil lit
Protect again.

Black upon knighted
Markers glow
End of train?
Journey flow?

In black of night
Little markers end
Signalled mind allusions
No longer contend.

Clothed in black
But shine of brass
Coaches lit to comfort
Fears subside in journey pass.

Marker lamps
At end of train
Protect brightly
Begin again.

i'm incomplete

'The Baggage Car'

Crewman in charge of baggage
King undisputed in that car
Muscle bound, world weary
Experienced much travel far.

His job to dispense baggage
Receive and care for cargo
Reflected on the freight in charge
Baggage passengers bestow.

A rusty bird cage
Worn out bike
Back Pack, tent
To never hike.

Broken heart
Bitter strife
Chamber pots
Precluding life.

In wild thought
Imagination flow
Enroute to station
As speed did grow...

Toss it all
This baggage dross!
To free those riding!
Not be loss!

Train begins to slow
Reality jolted thought
Opened door of baggage
Baggage passengers sought.

I love the subway's distant roar
you hear it coming quarter mile or more
the earth does rumble and echoes grow
until the subway appears and slows
my favorite part of the subway ride
has now disappeared with technology's strides
the lights that would flicker, go totally out
your spine would tingle without a doubt
cobalt blue lights would rush on by
eerie and scarier than an evil eye
just the click-clatter of rails neath the wheels
then the brakes on the curve would start to squeal
the darkness a blanket, respite from the bustle
for all too soon you'd be back in the hustle
of bright city lights that never are dimmed
you're back in the middle of the loony-bin

under darkness, under cover
train goes speeding down the track
headed for a destination
moving forward never back

Taking mothers to their daughters
helping sons find long lost homes
taking youths on an adventure
stars are shining, moon's a dome

Side by side they all are strangers
not to others at the end
once they reach their destination
mother, son, adveturer, friend

Aiobheann: Magic of rail sonnet precludes You not! Thank You.

AV: Eloquent thought gives vision to pasengers from the dome car..You have been guest speaker in charge there. Thank You.

'A Short Story'

Well, ...ah ...just because! Lol! I'm the Conductor!

Her hair like a sunset upon the pillow, carresed gently, so as not to disturb the magic of Her slumber. Morning ablutions accomplished: polished, shined clean pressed, body and soul, tea is prepared, for His love.

She will awaken soon. Contenteded, strolls He down the path of their well attended home. She is his heart's desire. Today marks the 20th anniversaary of their union.

With graying hair, respected in the community, black suited uniform donned, the day begins. Excitement is within! There will be a surprise today!

Curtains drawn back subtly, She watches. The pompous shined ass. He owed everything to Her intelligence.

She dumped the tea down the sink, and prepared a kettle for coffee.

So predictable! OH! Another dozen roses! Crap! Perhaps Two dozen because its 'special'! What a crock of crap! How She longed for excitement! Not that pretense of dancing at the local legion hall, or at some Union function....but desire! surprise.....

Flowers two dozen ordered delivered, and One extra to carry personally. Today, He was not going to work, as arranged with his employer. The florist smiled.

Dreamed she...'Bob'! Now there was a man! The mail carrier: worked a bit as a truck driver, played pool at the bar. Quick to fight, tough...and ..oh...! Enthralled She was at their first meeting at the rural mail box at the end of the lane, where he grabbed her butt......She feigned disdain.

She would meet Bob. Today. Again.

Her heart thrilled with the thought!

With One limp rose
Black suited suppose
Love to disclose

What a train.
What a journey.
What a station.
What a nation.

Youth spent

Smile no drill
Life not warried.

Soul fire lit
Calm aware.

Counting tickets
Rythm of track
Passing thickets
Perceived attack.

Kind in eye
Much of wit
No pretense try!

To workers kind
Aboard the train
Contented mind
Place to obtain.

Journeyed well

Sweetest smile

wow. A train thread. This is from a song i wrote in my teens... a train song

When you live beside the train
You could die miles away
I can’t live with you again
Please don’t ask me to stay
Cause I gotta move along
I gotta move right along
When you live beside the train
you can always hear
that lonesome song.
When you hear that whistle blow
and that rumble from the ground
Lord you know I'm gonna go
Don't depend on me being around
Cause I gotta move along
I gotta move right along
When you live beside the train
you can always hear that lonesome song.

Welcome Aboard!

Salty: Thank You for Your kind coincidence I suppose that 'bob' is something fisherpersons! Sincerest thanks! Patrons eagerly seek Your further poetic renderings!

Thank You!

Ravincause: Sincerest welcome! Your poem personally touched me with regard to memories of connected rails: tracks ripped up, trains disappearing, one person vehicles....relationship parody....that lonesome whistle song.

Thank You!

Station stop to soldiers there
Polished shined exteriour
Strict and proud with discipline
Share heart with but only 'kin'.

In parlour car to enjoy
Relaxed comradeship employ
Heart wrenched tears expose
With comrades experience chose.

Soldiers focussed heart true
Consciencious to duty due
Rowdy thought by some on train
Perceiving not sacrifice of pain.

Conductor turns an eye, not blind
To Steward says 'Be those kind'
Comfort in bed when done
Enjoyment have Our soldiers won.

In respected Honour of Soldiers.

'Wee One'

Wee One with gold locks of hair
Enthralled to see train go by there
Excitement rush in heart content
Much of Her leisure time spent.

Schedules knowing and locale
Something made Her heart pall
The track a washout rail bent!
Message to crew must be sent!

Wee One with gold locks of hair
Ran east to Westbound most aware
Flagged Her dress with all She had
Engine crew seen most glad.

With screeching brake
Eyes seen in heart to ache
Golden One is honoured true
Heartfelt by that westbound crew.

'Stopped at a siding'

While stopped here at the siding waiting for express trains to pass, passengers and crew need not be alarmed: the train continues. To pass the time, perhaps we might revisit 'Content' I know, a poem already seen: but expanded upon in intended thought...

'What about a beer!' Heard from patron in back.
'Steward. Please give that person a beer with my compliments.'

Complacent job becomes routine
Bored but not with passengers seen
Dwelling in personal emotion thought
Loss of youth the battles fought.

Older Lady with hair of gray
Spark of eye board train today
Packages bright and bags carry
No need of Porter to ferry.

Seated at the aisle seat
Position did not Her eye defeat
Enjoyed the scene with craning neck
From crew and all She earned respect.

Enjoyed the journey infectious smile
Gave cause to personal reflect awhile
Sincerest sweet content smile impart
Personal reflection on new journey start..

'What a trip'

Shining admired on steel blue
Board locomotive invited crew
Throttle eased to power felt
Secret card of fate dealt.

Exhilerated power of speed
Adrenelin excitement feed
Scenery sweet panoramic view
Subtle perception power mistrue.

With open door gazed out to obtain
Streamlined beauty following train
From view to rear curve not seen
Tossed held only by grab irons clean.

Regaining balance climbed back in cab
Rocked G-force another stab
Face first close to ballast past
Upside down clung by toes fast!

What a ride 'though scared to wit
Force thrown clear to tumble after bit
Dusted off with but minor scar
Watched streamliner vanish far..

What a trip...

eye Guy:

Lol. Welcome. Lets hope for no further crash! lol.

Layed over in Mason Ohio
Leisure desired to heart glow
On excursion train to Lebanon
With friend met night previous on.

Train depart Mason with ancient car
Destination 'Lebanon' mile not far
Thrilled in heart to railroad sound
Rembrance in my soul abound!

Aboard the 'Indiana & Ohio'
Short line aboard travelled slow
Open gondola at rear of train
Assault pleasant on all senses gain!

Alas, What! All must disembark
Last to leave is I train stark
Boarded again on 'I & O'
Passenger talk contented flow.

From Lebanon to journey end
Not forgotten my ol' friend
Thrilled in heart this ol' lad
Rekindled in fond memories had!
