Hey, my occasional plan is to bet on the Irish horses. Sometimes they even run the right way round the track.

But by far my most successful plan is to gamble at the bar...

What I do is get as close to the horses as possible when they walk them out and make my decision there looking at their demeaner.
I should have followed one informed better (a bookie and best mate of my friend I was staying with) on one tri fecta when I was in Nowra. It would have paid for my entire trip down under.
Maybe a combination of using your research, intuition, and following someone informed on one of the big money making races.

I Could tell you were a man of distinction
a real BIG SPENDER!!......
Being a soldier of fortune, I've had many a battle with the formidable foe the BOOKMAKER, so a soldier doesn't reval his plan of attack too early in the planned conflict. Best to sneak up on th little wascal, then do a MAD RUSH at the last minute.

Go the work sweep. As for betting, a sure way to come ahead is to take your dollars out of one pocket, and put them in the other.

This is a tip from my Mum - pick a grey horse & also helps if bred, trained in NZ????

missfee1 thats pretty much a good tip in most races not just nz-but any imports theyve gotta b good to bother shipping them in

also if ya quick enough to place a bet ....i used to watch a lot of races in a little country pub ...keep your eye on horses playing up @ the gates 9/10 times if there not scratched they run a place

Yellow yellow Daffodil, dancing in the sun..
oh yellow , yellow Daffodil, you tell me spring has come.
I can hear a blue bird sing, and hear a robin call.
but yellow yellow Daffodil I love you most of all.

I've got a tip.......there's a 110% chance that i'll be flicking channels and radio stations trying to avoid one of the most boring and overrated sporting events on the Australian calendar.......at least its a public holiday!

Think there's a good chance one of twenty or so horses might win it.Thats about the limit of my tipping skills.Prefer to watch a horse run around a paddock than a racetrack.

Daffodil.... and that's from a Melbourne girl. And also , for the outsider, because I like the name, Newport.

Well I live not too far from Newport in Melbourne and if you saw it you might not back it in the Cup.

I backed a horse on Derby day at 20 to 1. Unfortunately it didn't finish until quarter past three!

I think from..... that posters... previous posts.. they miss being in Melbourne...as opposed to being stuck in WA....(from what they have indicated)
So maybe home sickness.. makes even Newport seem.. nostalgically ..... enticing?
or they just like the name...

Well. after the whipping horses thread....bringing to my attention.. the many facets..
of the industry... (until I make an absolute decision..on how I feel... which I haven't seen /heard all sides yet... still clueless re horses/racing etc...)
Ive decided I won't participate..today...
although my usual Melbourne Cup.. betting style...(formula)...
I always win 1st...2nd..3rd... so sit back.. and smile...
I usually add/weigh up the odds on the least winnings on 3 places....
If it is viable to get my money back.. I place $1 for a win or place...on every horse....
if an outsider wins.. I make more money...
To date.. I always get my money back... plus a few bucks..
Then I put a couple bets on trifectas etc... (still come out even)
and the fact.. I visited my pub yesterday.. and they had only 3 beers left.. of the type I drink...(until thursday.. whoever does the ordering.. farked up)..and those beers will be gone.. I only....had one...
Ive decided to sit this year out......
punting elsewhere...

peace

You're right Soulmate... I am practically weeping with nostalgia. I picked Newport because it was such a 'down market' suburb but just you punters in Real Estate watch, so was Williamstown at one stage and look at it now... only a Melbourner would understand.
