Why are people scared of mental illness?Page 9 of 9    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9)
I don't want anymore trouble in my life... so, I do stay away from men who are on medication for all kinds of mental health issues. I'm not talking depression, I'm talking PROBLEMS. I admit it right up front that I can't handle it... it doesn't mean I'm ignorant, it means I've been down that road with men before, and I learned my lesson the hard way.

Why are people scared of mental illness?

Maybe you should read the thread instead of tearing me apart

Lela, you did come up with an interesting topic. I think that the answer to your original question is obvious, though. Lela, believe me: I'm not tearing you apart. I did manage to read your post right above my original post, and it seems that you're still questioning why people are "scared" of mental ilness.

Again, people are not scared of depressives, addicts, or people who merely have personality quirks. Are people generally wary of psychotics, bipolar people, Alzheimer's patients, etc.? Absolutely. And that's the right approach to have. It doesn't mean that you can't have some sympathy for a demented person. However, it is just common sense to be cautious or wary (you can say "scared" if you want) around a person who exhibits very disordered behavior and speech patterns. Paranoid schizophrenics, in particular, are downright dangerous, both to themselves and others. Being very wary and uncomfortable around a demented person is a normal, acceptable reaction.

So stop being defensive, Lela, and address what I said in my two posts!

^^^Great sense of humor. It's always great to have a dose of that on a thread! It lightens things up.
But no, we're not all crazy. Many people have unusual behaviors or quirks; but that doesn't make you crazy. Some people are mentally ill, and most others are not.

I think that a person who decides to get involved w/someone with mental issues has to have tremendous patience & also read up on the illness (DSM Manual - & other literature & articles). That way, each party can work harder to preserve the relationship. I am pretty open-minded & think it could work between 2 people but they have to work that much harder.

Even people with mild symptoms of depression, anxiety, bipolar, borderline, addictions etc. etc. can be pretty difficult for some people to handle.

OKAY a sensitive topic that hits right to home. My divorceeeeee husband "decided" that he does not need medication. Now he casually drinks. Hangs out in a casino with his whore. I just got a financial from a divorce paper (one of many)and he blew 45k in one year. "this was legally the family money" HE HAS DECIDED THAT HE IS NOT BIPOLAR WITH SERIOUS PSYCHOSIS.
Bipolar doesn't go away. he was diagnosed by 6 or 7 doctor's. tried to commit suicide. ans was baker acted~was put in the mental hospital. OHHHHH ~he is fine~ gave up his career altogether `his family and everything. No job. nothing.

I have a panic disorder. I was traumitized when I was 24yrs old. i will have this for life.
I do take meds. I will take meds for life. My body shakes sometimes. There is no medication that can change the post traumatic stress. The damage is done. And that is the way it is. Now as my psych say to me..........why would some judge you???? would they judge an epileptic for taking epilepsy medication? Demean them? Because
for any halfway educated people ot there nuerological issues does not neccissaily mean that the person is crazy, nor does a seritonin imbalance. I take Topomax.
It is for epilepsy. I have a pannice disorder. Not panice attacks and stupid people misjudge mental illness with their ignorance.

Before being so quick to judge. Educate yourself on the working of the brain~which may I add~this science has only developed in the last 15 years! Educate yourself on what part of the bain that the medication effects. And get a thorough understanding of whatever this condition may be and what steps, vitamins, health store products, exercize, support groups, books, herbal suppliments and dietary changes can help possibly even correct some of these illnesses.

Stop judging for the opinionated **stard. Look at yourself. Get on atreadmill and loose some of that excess weight that you are carry or maybe join a Bible study group to help EDIFY your soul and teach you kindness toward other people.

Thank You

As a man suffering with schizophrenia and depression I can understand most people would be affraid of someone like me. I've had experiences of hurting others, no doubt. Do I do anything about it? Nope cause I know that's not gonna solve my problems. Does the medication do me any good? Nope! I still get visions, I still hear voices. Best thing I can do is put on some soft music and transcend and meditate. D lily is right. Those of us suffering who have friends do much better. However most schizo's are barely audible and suffer from not speaking our mind and as such have little or no friends. It's an ongoing war in our minds and we find little peace. Always wanting to be ourselves when it's just not possible. Anyway I hope you can see what we go through.

I should add this... 3/4 of the world has a mental illness whether they recognize it or not! other 1/4 are just plain out freaky normal people with no personality. Look inside yourself before you judge.

I'm sure if given the choice you would not choose to have a mental illness... why would you expect someone else to choose that in their mate?

Is this how you get your kixx? Starting sh!t with people online? Grow up! There's more to life than making people misserable. Yet you say you work with mentally ill? You're just afraid lil girl. Work on your confidence it'll make you feel better about yourself. BTW no one has contradicted you even though you obviously need a hug. Peace

while i don't fear the mentally ill, i do fear their behavior. after meeting a deeply disturbed individual on this site (alcoholism, inability to differentiate between sleep and waking states, hearing voices, rage, projection, delusions of grandeur etc.), i noticed that i simply shut down as soon as someone starts showing any behavior or saying something out of the norm.

overreacting? probably. but when you go through the kind of sh*t that i did, trying to encourage the person to seek help, you get gun-shy. quickly.

And I'm sure somewhere there's a "be fair... stupid people need love, too" thread.

Dating is about choice, personal priorities, etc.

This has nothing to do with "fear". I don't fear a nut-job, but like a cow-pie I choose to step around it, not bring it home and put it in my bed...

geezz...
