I dont like the country music performed by the younger "recording artists" of today.....Its seems very silly and shallow and commercialized to me.....Give me a woman who can play a fiddle or guitar and tell a riveting and emotional story with just her and her musical instrument anyday...I dont consider airbrushed, lip glossed, tight shirted big tits sticking out young women "mouthing" songs they never even wrote to be stars.....But I absolutely adore the older singer songwriters who write and perform their own stuff and are focused more on bluegrass/blues and folk like Mary Chapin Carpenter, Nanci Griffith, Lori McKenna, Shawn Colvin, Rosanne Cash, Allison Krauss and Union Station, Lucinda Williams, Townes van Zant, Rosalie Sorrels, Natalie McMaster, Marc Cohn, Bruce Hornsby,John Prine, Kris Delmhorst, Loudon and Rufus Wainwright, Woody Guthrie, Arlo Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Bill Staines.

Agree with musicismyporn... good stuff can be found in any genre, IF that's what you're looking for.
If you go by whatever is playing on the local country station, you might like it or you might not. I mostly don't. But I have 4 CDs by Sara Evans, who I consider to be one of the great artists of our times. So is Loretta Lynn, but for me, Sara is more fun to listen to.
What I said about the radio - true of any other type too. I don't hear nearly enough really original art to suit me. But radio is where I first heard some great artists, sometime. Including Jackson Browne, Black Sabbath/Ozzie, Sixpence None the Richer, and Disturbed. On the other hand I've only heard OF Sleater-Kinney being played. Found them and a lot of other people whose CDs I bought on the Net. So - you want more quality, dig for it.

I used to really dislike country music until a few years ago when my favorite "pop" radio station started playing nothing but R&B and Hip Hop. So I switched to the country station and actually discovered a lot of artists who I really enjoy now. I've seen a few of these acts live and have to say some of them were amazing. Just saw the Kenny Chesney "Poets and Pirates Tour". Keith Urban opened for him and IMO stole the show. He is an amazing guitarist - I was shocked at how talented he is. Gary Allan is also a new favorite of mine. He kind of snubs Nashville and their attitude in regards to becoming a sell-out/pin-up boy - his music is heartfelt and his voice is gravely and refreshingly unique. As for female artist, my vote goes to Allison Kraus. She sings like an angel.

Once upon a time ago, I used to listen to it. But then the day came that I heard it, in its more current incarnation as it is popularly now. I mean really listened to it and heard the lyrics and the lifestyles that most of them were mostly singing about, and right then and there I asked myself if that's what I really want to 'aspire to' (you become what you are exposed to) in life. That was the day that I chose to move out of the trailer park and move on....
Sometimes there's very little that we individually control in this world, but that still doesn't mean you can't vote with your feet on some things once in a while too.

country was the beginning of american music. let's not forget it lead to rock n roll and eventually hip-hop. anyone who can't appreciate the moaning lyrics of a hank williams sr. song just isn't listening. i don't know about you, but i can relate to heartaches and headaches more than ****es and bling.

I think what many people - including myself- find unappealing about country music is that today, it just seems so 'cookie cutter', for lack of a better term. Shania Twain is the perfect example: her producer was Mutt Lange (Def Leppard, AC/DC) . Her stuff is 'cut and pasted' together and sounds more like pop music. What's country about that? It also seems that country has fallen into the same pretentious groove that pop and rock are in: talent is not necessary - it's all about how beautiful you are! And why try to gain a following? Just sign up for the next Nashville Star on t.v.! Yuck! That's why country music is littered with 'artists' like Whitney Duncan.

Give me Johnny Cash any day.

Yeah rock n roll was influenced by Country and Blues. The only difference is Rock N Roll hasn't changed. Country isnt country anymore. The voices havent changed so much, it's the lyrics and the instruments. Could you hear Johnny Cash singing anything from cowboy troy? Could you see Hank Williams dancing around like a rapper? Thats why I cannot stand to hear country music anymore.

Truthfully the only thing I have against country music is just the sound. If I didn't have to hear it, it wouldn't be that bad...............so yeah, just to sum this up..............................the sound of it. Not so much, the look of it because I really like Faith Hill, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, etc. Yep, it's the sound...definitely.

There is only one country musician...Johnny Cash. Other than that? They are all pop-star wannabees. I absolutely hate country music as it sounds all the damn same....and I also agree with the poster about Shania...her music is pure pop all she did was throw on some boots!!

O-T-B...I'm with you. Remember when Aerosmith released that hit love song, then it showed up on country charts by a country artist...and it goes on and on. It's like we have a generic brand of music now, and the only thing that defines the genre is a desicion to use either a pedal steel or electric guitar, and a matter of a vocal inflection.
I love Cash and Hank. That was real. Cash wasn't a great technical singer, but it was honest. He recorded Live fom Folsom Prison against the label's better advice, and proved them wrong. You can't do that in today's hit-churning mediocre music machine.

One thing that happened is that Garth Brooks made it possible for any hick with a guitar and cowboy hat to become a superstar.
I don't like his songs but he's well respected in the CM community for that reason.
He also incidently sold twice as many records as anyone else.

What about Allan Jackson, Brad Paisley, Alabama, George Strait, Brooks & Dunn ..............they all sound the same ?
I was impressed when George won a bunch more awards this past year.....I forget but did that include Album of the year ?
George also holds sellout and attendance records in a number of cities and the most #1 hits by any singer.

I agree about Shania.......and it's been a while since I really liked a female country singer.......mind you she is'nt hard to look at.

Anybody remember Tanya Tucker or Highway 101 ?

I dont mind a bit of country rock now and again,use to do the linedancing thing.But i like Mark Chesnutt,Joe Diffie,Saywer Brown etc.Then you get some of the aussie artists to such as Lee Kernaghan and Kasey Chambers.

I can't stand country music. I heard 18 years worth of country music growing up at home, and I hear country music every day now now at work because many of the co workers listen to it. I don't like the sound, the style, or the songs.

What is the problem with CM in todays day and age?
How about the commercialism? It seems that's pretty much all the labels look at and it really hurts the artists who have that unique vocal talent, those artists who write songs that make you think (Johnny Cash-Drive On) or touch the heart (Keith Whitley-Don't Close Your Eyes) or just plain make you laugh.(David Allen Coe-You Never Even Called Me by My Name)

CM is also changin, becomin a different style then the classic country. It's more crossin country with pop rock. Look at the pop rockers (Kelly Clarkston/Miley Cyrus) who are tryin country style songs.

I've been a supporter/fan/friend of a young country artist for the last three years now and he's got the talent, artistry, and writing skills of the classic country style. I think it's one of the reasons he's on such a slow progress of becomin a "big star" of country music TV/radio but has spent more time on the Grand Old Opry than any other new artist of his age. Ya'll are probably wonderin ok, what's his name already. His name is Chris Young. If you go to MySpace and search for him you'll find his page and can listen to his newest single "Gettin You Home" which has been out for six weeks and is already at #44 on the R&R charts

To me, this is what CM is about....
