we didn't support al queada in the 80's it was the mosa ha deen I beleive, the afgan freedom fighters who were fighting against the communist who invaded. Our support was limited to giving sam's spacificaly stinger missial systems which allowed them to shoot down the Migs the russians were using for close air support leading to many victories aganst the russians and saddam only received 3% of his total support from the US only durring the iran & iraq war you do know that some times the enemy of our enemy is our friend..... just like we supported russia during WW2

Yea right. Just giving Afghan freedom fighters stinger missiles. Those fighters were fully supported every way possible. Don't you think it is impossible to back up a couple of freedom fighters to beat the whole Army of Afghanistan, which is great in size and capability? During that time when we supported them, Al-Qaeda was in full contact with these freedom fighters and there were lots of Arabs working there as well including Bin Laudin and the US government was an ally with Osama. Those who help and support terrorists are terrorists themselves.

And mind you, the overall goal wasn't to bring democracy in Afghanistan because those freedom fighters were more religious than the "communist" regime run by then president of Afghanistan, Najiubullah, but it was to beat the Russians through Afghans because they were more familiar with terrrain in Afghanistan than American soldiers.
