What about the personal ads on Craigslist? Page 1 of 5    (1, 2, 3, 4, 5)
I have not responded to one of those yet, but if you do consider replying to one of them, there is one simple way to prevent spam.

Ok, well it won't prevent spam, but it will divert it from your regular email.

Go to a free webmail service (yahoo, msn/hotmail/live, gmail, etc) and create a new account.
Use this new account to reply to the ad.
After several emails when you confirm that this person is not a scammer, give them your regular email address to continue the conversation. Explain that you use the email address to reduce spam going to your preferred email address.

This has an added benefit. If you ever need to submit your email address to a site in order to utilize some content, you have this email account to sacrifice in the event that it generates spam.

I was wondering if anyone had ever met & dated someone who posted their profile on Craigslist?

I have. I've posted and replied to posts. This was 3 years ago though. But like every other site, there's good and there's bad. I could write so much on the positives of CL but I won't get into the personal stuff. Just take a shot, answer the ad, it isn't too hard to spot a scammer these days anyway.

I've seen ladies from here on Craigslist, a couple under the services section. Here they are looking for a nice guy, there they are looking for a naughty boy that had a stressful week.

Your best bet would probably be to post about doing an activity rather than a general post in the personals section. There are usually a LOT of posts from guys in there so it would be difficult to get noticed. But if you post in the activities section for whatever you enjoy doing, I think you'd have a better chance at getting a serious reply. And then you can sort of go out on a "date" without it actually being a date. And if that goes well and you like the person, just go from there like usual. Less spammers in the activities section as well.

And don't write your post out as though it sounds like a date either or people might flag it ;) Just say you're looking to play tennis or catch a movie.
And the suggestion above about using a free address like hotmail is also a good one.

I haven't a clue what the dealio is with CraigsList. I went there once to see what the buzz is about and I still fail to understand it.

My ex (LTR of 8 yrs) met his now-wife on Craigs List. Claimed he met her in the politics/athiest chats. They met, she left her husband, he broke up with me, I moved out, she moved in, and they got married as soon as her divorce was final. I thought CL was only for used couches and for cheap rugs, but I guess you can find everything there..... me, I still use it for furniture and car parts.... LOL!!!!

I can say in all honestly about the whole postings on CL that yes.... there are the occasional (well, actually TONS) of postings that are fake but fortunately for the people who use the site voice their opinions and flag the postings before anything serious can come of it.

As for meeting people off of the site, I have actually met a couple of people and truth be told.... it wasnt that bad, mind you we will remain platonic but hey who am I to complain of making another friend.

I will say this... out of the 2 months I have had postings on CL I have had more success in responses MUCH more than this site for over how many years I have been on here..... how sad is that!

In the end, if you dont feel comfy about answering one of those ads then trust your instincts, but ..... from time to time its a little bit fun taking that risk knowing that it could be that possibility of what you are actually looking for without the BS.

Hi, Petrock,

I just posted an ad on CL in SF bayarea. I did not post my photo, but asked for one. I did this on Sunday afternoon and by Sunday night I had 10 plus emails with photos (not a bad haul for an old broad!). I returned my photos (the same here on POF) and have only heard back from 4 men. Two of the men I hope to meet as friends (one because of the age difference and one is going thru a divorce). The other two, well, well see if they email pack that they actually want to meet.

My advice is to post your photo. But from what I've heard, it's pretty flaky out there. But, that seems to be my experience on all of the sites (Yahoo, eHarmony, POF).

Ironically, I did get one "hate" mail from someone who assumed I was a fake (a 51 y/o woman is the figment of someone imagination?! I think not..).

So my 2cents worth is to go in with no expectations and maybe you'll be pleasantly surprised. I do think this medium can work well because I do know of 5 couples that met and married someone they met online (various sites). And, I've met some good male buddies this way (the same ones that eventually met and married a woman they met online.

Best of luck!

I don't think CL is any better or worse than POF. Many of the things that happen on CL can also happen on POF.

1. People who have a laundry list of requirements.
2. People who lie about their age, height, weight, marital status etc.
3. Rude, vulgar emails.

The only major difference is that some of the ads ( especially the w4m ads ) are spam. However there are probably some fake profiles on POF as well.

More than half the people on CL are a waste of time, if they're real, to begin with! However, I have a girlfriend who happens to be quite lucky when it comes to finding decent guys to go out with on there, so I guess it's basically a hit or miss situation. My experience has been quite the opposite of hers - nothing but fakers and guys just wanting to waste my time! I'd rather stick with POF - I'm not having much luck here, either, but at least I can actually TELL who the scammers are on here!

craigslist home of the scammers, spammers, escorts, trolls, pic collectors , sex freaks and the occasional real connect.
reading some of the posts can be funny though. read through the missed connections and "strictly platonic". i dont know about other areas but ny and long island cls strictly platonic is never platonic when m4m m4w.

I had an ad on Craig's List. Took it down after I got a bunch of replies from men 3 times my age, married men looking to cheat, and perverts.

So yes. Some of those ads are real. Mine was :(

Recently read about a case-study on Craigslist personal ads:

"After reviewing 6,590 personal advertisements, it was found that 84% (possibly even as high as 91%) of the personal advertisements examined were by imposters posting fake ads".

They targeted the women seeking man category, and their main method of fraud detection was looking for duplicate ads (pictures, text) in different cities.

You can read the details of their report at http://www.onlinepersonalsfraud.com/

I started using CL a few weeks ago with fairly good success. As a result I have two steady lady friends now and several nice chats going. I give CL a 5 out of 10 for a rating in personals. But there are LOADS of nut jobs there too! Easily 80% are certifiable! I recall one nasty old woman who didn't like what I posted, she haunted me for weeks with nasty things like: posting my photo and making up lots of lies about me on CL and telling lies to some POF's. I know some of the Washington DC POF folks know her. Apparently she has conned quite a few into believing she is a nice person when she is anything but. However, I refuse to stoop to her vile level and tell tails about her, even though she had no problem with slandering me! If you are reading this, you know who you are, and so do I! I also reported her to Markus, hopefully he'll do something about that snake. If you are reading this TL: Get a shrink nutzo!

i know the sections for craigslist for all states are differant but yet in away they all remain the same..same trolls same spam same trash same predator types..

i don't know how many of you have read the rants an raves section on craigslist but here in Tulsa,Oklahoma the rants an rave section is just pure racisim in raw form.. pure redneck white trash okies at thier finest talking s hit about anybody who isn't a red blooded white american..

i mean from time to time differant people come in an rant an talk about differant things about what happened or is happening but 70& to 80% of the time,, it always leads back to the N word an every other word in the book about other minoritys an how dirty stinky bad evil an dumb we minorities are.. it's really depressing an sad..

an it's only gotten worse since we have a non white president..an for those of you who think racisim an dicsrimination is dead or not as bad as it used to be,, you need to wake up an take thoses rose tinted glasses off.. anit nothing changed it just became more sugar coated..

I am about to go out on a date with a girl I met from craigslist. It's better than POF, that's for sure. It seems that the more I message someone here, the less we are able to meet.

When using Craigslist you just have to jump in and start responding to people's profiles because if you're afraid you're contacting a spammer then you'll never respond to the real women who put their profiles on CL. I've used Craigslist numerous times and have had success in meeting women off of the site. But I've been fooled by spam and been contacted by spam. After a while you recognize spammers but until you try you'll never know.

Truth. Tons of spam responses. Sometimes I put out an ad and just get spam. Other times i get responses.

One thing it has taught me is that this whole dating thing is more than just pictures. Physically, I was into this one chick I meet, but personality wise, we completely clashed and I couldn't keep the charade up.

When in doubt, dont.

Most are just scammers, as for the legitimacy, well, there is always one in a million.

I've used craigslist in the past and it's a little hit or miss, in my case, mostly misses. From spam replies to no replies at all, craigslist personnels kind of suck. I have met two people through craigslist though and we're great friends, so in a sense, the old saying "nothing ventured, nothing gained" still holds true.
