Gotta have the funk!Page 1 of 2    (1, 2)
So lately I've been getting interest in funk. Its a genre you just don't hear enough of these days. Unfortunately I know precious little about it and don't really know of any artists to listen to. Can anyone recommend some good artists/albums to listen too (besides Parliament/George Clinton)?

well, first off James Brown. James Brown, James Brown.

then Al Green, Al Green.

after that...well, it doesn't matter after that because that about says it all but I'd definitely try some of Bootsy Collins stuff. funny and incredibly funky. (oh and google Bootsy and read up on him. he's a trip)

Scus y! Do North Mississippi Allstars fit in here somewhere? Even if they don't, I recommend Hill Country Review album because it kicks some serious rear. You'll be driving along the highway thumping your thumbs on the steering wheel while you listen. Good stuff.

Just caught a great music festival last month that featured quite a few amazing funk
bands ... many with ties to New Orleans and the roots music that comes out of that town ... check out Galactic, Dr. Claw, Ivan Neville's Dumpstafunk, Lettuce, The Slip and one of my favorite bands, Bonerama ... type in Bear Creek Music festival in a search engine / You tube and get your boogie shoes out ... as a lot of these musicians were on - site for the entire weekend, there were quite a few guest appearances as musicians sat in with bands other than their own ... some good stuff here, folks.

War , Fatback Band [ early stuff] , Charles Wright 103rd St band [express yourself] , Gil Scott Heron [ Forefather of rap], Last Poets [ditto] , Stax records [early 70s] , Bobby Byrd - Lynn Collins and [of course] JAMES BROWN ....

that small selection should set you on a grand old groove !!

Depends on what you're looking for and a lot of the bigger names have been all over the map. I like the rawer early stuff more associated with late 60s early 70s James Brown.

James Brown - In The Jungle Groove
Curtais Mayfield - Superfly
Pleasure - Dust Yourself Off
VA - Keb Darge's Legendary Deep Funk
Eugene Blackwell - You Can't Take Life for Granted
The Meters - Struttin'
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - Naturally
The Village Callers - Live
Spanky Wilson and the Quantic Soul Orchestra - I'm Thankful

Rick James (She's a very sexy girl, the kind you can't take home to momma")

Average White Band

P Funk
"Never gonna tell It"

Lee McBee (local)

Finnegan and Wood (also Local, also wood is deceased)
"I got A Letter"

BR549 (Local) any

I dunno, I am very intimidated by this list...but I'd like to see it grow

takes me back to the 80's and that whole decade is foggy. At least it was sucking in the 70's. I do love funk, but it's got to be real tacky to really love it. Tell me more! Stop, don't!

Gregory Isaacs does he count? Um, wracking my brain, be back later

mate you've inspired quite a debate on a musicforum over here in the UK [ a reggae forum] !!! ....
Funk, like most musical styles follows a time line starting somewhere in 40s jazz & continueing to the present day ....
George clinton/parliment/funkadelic/ brides of funkenstien etc lie roughly in the middle of this timeline, ...... try putting 'funk' into wikidedia .....
Sooo, which way 'tickles your fancy' - back to a more stripped down [ james brown ] or more recent stuff [sort of discofunk]??
thats about all i can say with the info you have given us!! lol

until then how about trying The Jimmy Castor Bunch - trogledyte [sp] or The Bertha Butt Boogie - they should raise a smile !!

some cd's of earlier stuff - Funk Drops vols 1 to4 atlantic records [warner bro's ?]
The other style you can check out is [in the UK] called Rare Groove ..
Its proving an enjoyable challenge, so please feel free to respond !!

Ps - We have been checking out some of the other posters recommendations - Thanks

Ah, wow. This makes me reminisce over the 70's and 80's. Nothing like good Soul, Funk, and Jazz music.

Hmm, I recommend music by Isaac Hayes, Sister Sledge, or Gil Scott Heron.

Victor Wooten's "Soul Circus" is a great one (among others by Mr. Wooten)
Bootsy Collins is another guy to look out for
Marcus Miller is phenomenal
Jaco Pastorius, although more a jazz player, has some pretty funky stuff. See "Come On Come Over".
Sly and the Family Stone
The Commodores
The Gap Band
Cameo
The list goes on and on... :-)

Oh yeah, the Gap Band! I forgot about them. "You dropped a bomb on me", one of my favorite tunes.
