Hello All,

This is my first post in this section. I was at my Dr's yesterday and had had some blood work done last month. Turns out my triglycerides are literally off the chart! They can't figure out the ratio of good cholesterol to bad because of this! I am 3 points over the high end of scale!

I am now at 31 on Lipid lowering medications. I am being referred to another specialist about this. Family history etc. I have always had higher cholesterol, but this test scares the bejeezus out of me. I guess it has something to do with my liver over producing them or something, as opposed to diet and lifestyle.
I am average build, maybe 10lbs over the ideal for my height (so not obese). I have a relatively healthy diet, I eat egg whites over whole eggs etc. So diet suggestions are not what I am looking for, I have seen a nutritionist years ago over this, and found my Triglycerides jumped 1.5 points when on a special diet.

I am looking to see if there are any other suggested natural remedy's to help lower this in conjunction with the med I am now on! I need to get this under control, as I don't really want to be on a lifelong medication at my age.

I lowered my 'bad' cholesterol strictly by becoming vegetarian. You get the bad stuff from animal products.

Get another test to make sure they are that bad. Assuming it was a 12 hour fast before the test, since that is standard procedure for cholestral testing, did you adhere to it?

It has been an ongoing thing over years and have monitored it! This test I had fasted for 13 hours when blood was drawn, so it that sense it is accurate.
Discovered originally as a child when my dad developed heart problems, and have always known I tended to run on the high end of scale I watched my diet and intake to avoid increasing it.
Was just a little spooked, still am! I started the Lipidil yesterday. I know some say that cayenne or other herbal "supplements" can be used in conjunction to lower levels and this is the advice I was seeking.

High triglycerides are caused by eating too much sugar, refined grains, white flours, pasta, white rice, etc.
You can lower then by changing your diet to whole grains.
Eating cholesterol doesn't give you high cholesterol. On the contrary- without enough cholesterol from food sources, the body is forced to produce it. Egg yolks are not the problem.
How much sugar (+ sweeteners) and whites do you eat?

There's more good stuff in them that refined/milled grains, but they are still predominantly carbs.

Your body produces about 2000 mg of cholesterol/day, no forcing required, and average dietary intake is about 200 mg/day. Dietary cholesterol has not been proven to affect serum cholesterol. Cutting dietary intake of cholesterol to zero has little effect on serum cholesterol.

Sounds like she's got genetic problem managing tryglycerides, which is considered "by some" to be worse than high cholesterol. Low cholesterol and high tryglycerides still means CVD. Many people with avg/low cholesterol still die from heart disease.

Our son whose been on insulin since he was a baby, had genetic cholesterol issues and he avoids all white foods, be it bread, rice, pasta, potato, sugar, flour. And he eats whole grains, oatmeal, vegetables. fish.

Consider seeing a registered dietician to see how your food choices are and what changes you could do. Also ask your physician if trying niacin which can help boost your HDL. It is tricky and can cause some people to get flushed.

Thanks bugsbro! This is what I was looking for.
I will look into the flaxseed oil and garlic, I knew about the fish oils.

I know that this is a genetic issue. However right now with a level of 5.28 and the normal high for triglycerides here is 2.8, they have decided to put me on the Lipidil. I will be doing liver function tests often and cholesterol tests to to monitor, as they thik its the liver that is creating the high levels to begin with.

Currently I am in an air cast for a nasty sprain and chipped bone in ankle from softball, but normally I am on 4-5 sports teams at any time so I have a lot of activity in my day to day life. I do eat a lot of veggies and fiber, and have cut down massively on the "white" foods way back in January. So diet alone is not my issue, as I had said previously that I have seen a nutritionist before and following that diet caused my levels to jump up 2 points a few years back.

Thanks for the input everyone, hopefully I can get this under control!

A lot of the time high Triglycerides are caused by sugars. Regular sugar, processed grains (flour) ,beer , sodas ect. You can probably lower it quickly taking these out of your diet. Pancreas problems can lead to blood sugar swings .
Did you also get a complete blood work up done? Bun,/ast /got,basophils ect. if not get a complete work up when you can. Foods cause problems and can cure problems . Don't give up trying.

Sorry I didn't see Landras reply. Most people asume LDL and Triglycerites are the same. They are not. Sugar is your culprit 99% of the time.

And a Total Cholesterol number doesn't really tell you much. You need to know the breakdown between HDL and LDL. For HDL, the higher the better.

RE do test after fasting.

Oatmeal works best. and it must be teh cooked one not the instant one. Whole grains Seem to take the numbers down. I am surprised yoru dr did not advise you of this.

If your eating a well balanced diet w/o sugar and foods that are on the low glycemic index then you may want to look at your lifestyle. If you work with computers, sleep with an electric blanket, or are constantly exposed to high doses of electrical transmissions this could be causing you to produce more cholesterol. My stepfather used to work with supercomputers and his body was manufacturing more cholesterol than it could use. EMF's can be very damaging.
If you do/are on medication I would not be taking any herbal remedies as some could be contraindicated. Talk to your Dr. or pharmacist to make sure of any side effects.

OP save your money, as MonaVie is typical multi level marketing scam. Although it may have some health benefits they are not any better than just eating healthy and exercise regularly.

The only difference is that stuff will cost you tons of $.

Having a car in the Indy 500 has nothing to do with the product claims and it matters less what place they finished.
All it does prove is that they make enough money from the product to field a competitive car in the Indy 500.

Oprah is taking a good bashing from news week for endorsing bogus products.

hi... diet and exercise instead of drugs.... animal products are bad, so is stress... do yoga and eat high raw without any drugs for a few months and then recheck your levels... blessings for health, warmly Mona

This is a health and medical question best left for a doctor to answer and discuss any suggestions with him first before doing it.

here are a few suggestions:
1. fish oil
2. garlic

fish oil:
Benefits

There is strong scientific evidence for its effect in lowering blood levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein/LDL ("bad cholesterol"), and triglyceride levels (see below). Because an approved drug is identical to the molecule it is therefore regulated as a drug by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

remember discuss this with your doctor to make sure it doesnt affect your medicine.

Throw garlic into some kind of fruit smoothie. Garlic increases circulation, which keeps artieries from getting clogged pumping blood, which helps purge bad cholesterol through natural means, urine and feces.

Also Omega 3 & 4 fatty acids are good for promoting healthy blood circulation and purging bad cholesterol. I take them in pill form. Liquid is more quickly absorbed.

I did not see anyone suggest niasin, vitamin b-6, as a "natural treatement" for triglycerides. Large dosages should be monitored and directed by a doctor. Now the bad part: A large dosage will cause a brief (10 min) flush, which will turn your skin red and cause a burning sensation, much like an allergic reaction. However, when taking multiple 500 mg tablets in rapid succession, after you had the intitial flush, you won't experience recurrences as you take the subsequent ones. I understand there are some prescription products that put this are time release and much more comfortable to take. Again, I'd talk to dr before doing this. It can complicate other maladies, like diabetis.

On reducing LDL, I've found that counting mg of cholesterol works quite well. Cholesterol is in only in animal products. During the week, for example, I target 100 or less mg per day during the week by carefully apportioning dead animal products, and eat let go during the weekend. This is similar to the T-factor diet of old, which counts fat grams, in the post melt down phase. Google that and get a nutition book, and keep a diary for a couple of weeks until you can do it mentally. I started the above when I reached the lipid medication max dose. After 3 months, my LDL went down 25% under the ceiling the doctors want to see. Another side note, if you combine a low animal fat T diet with carb selections made with reference to the glycemic index, you will lose weight (essentially the South Beach diet). You can eat as many of the low glycemic carbs as you want. The T factor diet is the absolute opposite of the Adkins diet.

Protein substitutes: Egg whites, nuts, legumes. Meat stock is not fatty, and Philly fat free cream chesse (5 mg of cholesterol) works.

OP, I'm not offering advice -just information that you should take to your doctor and discuss.

Although you mentioned "not mentioning" nutritional aspects, I find this to be integral information:
Dietary cholesterol is only part of the equation. Other substances affect cholesterol:
saturated fats ( a given these days; however products labeled " no cholesterol" can still have a negative effect on cholesterol). Sugar and alcohol raise the level of natural cholesterol (that the body produces). Stress also raises natural cholesterol. Even things like large amounts of coffee can raise it.
It takes a comprehensive approach that includes avoiding the consumptionof animal products, saturated fats, sugar, alcohol and eliminating stress.

Suggestions for lowering LDLs: (again, under the care of your practicioner)

I haven't practiced medicine in about 7-8 years, but the last I knew, the medical community was working on an enzyme to break down the LDL (and accelerate its removal) for people with hereditary disorders.

Certain drugs can elevate chol. levels: steroids, oral contraceptives, furosemide (Lasix), other diurectics, and levadopa (L-dopa, sold under the names Dopar, Larodopa, and Sinemet); beta-blockers.

Substances that lower cholesterol:
Apple Pectin
Calcium Aspartate
Chromium Picolinate
CO Q-10
Fiber (dietary is the primary goal)
Garlic (Kyolic)- also lowers blood pressure- it's not for everyone
Lecithin granules

these are the main ones- there are several.

replacing pepper with cayenne pepper is good for cholestrol and has other benefits.

EFA's (essential fatty acids) are very important. These include (best sources):
black currant seed oil
borage oil
primrose oil

olive oil is good to use in the diet as well

there are many alternative therapies, such as chelation therapy, as well.
google alternative therapiees for lowering cholesterol, and discuss all of the info. with your dr.

1 T 3 times daily, before meals

this is also: 1200 mg 3 times daily, in capsule form (before meals)

this is the equivalent of 1.2 grams, 3 times a day, or 3. 6 gms
