How young to use the internetPage 1 of 1
At 7 I finally turned my daughter completely free to use the internet on her own..

In kindergarden we had to sign parental form to allow them to use the computer at school. Same in 1st and 2nd.(each year most likely)

Well, for the last 2 years my daughter has been going on, only after I log onto a site, or open an email page to write a letter or school work.

Now this summer she has been grabbing my screen name (open) to do searches(while I've been right there)..BUT......security settings only stop stuff coming in and an "OK" box to agree for adult material.

SOOOOOOOOO...last week I spent the hour to set up parent controls, blocks, 150 min daily limit, and full DAILY parent report to my email ...and turned her 100% on her own to come and go as she likes...

FYI... I have her settings through AOL set at the up to 15 yo range...As she already reads years advanced, can read any newspaper, and has been doing school work/games on the computer for about a year anyway.

However... even at 15 yo setting...I have to give permission for Icarly and disney channel...I found that strange... I understand google,ASK, and such search engines have been blocked..

Soooo in a computer age, where my daughter sees her dad order parts, equipment repair, shop, get cooking recipes, watch news around the world, etc... A world were my daughter has been on the home computer and library/school computers for well over a year. A world where a computer with a 36 inch monitor is ON almost all day everyday, right there in the dinning room, is it not right for her to be able to use it, just like a TV/DVD/Microwave, etc

Thoughts?

Again the parental controls are totally limitless through AOL (You can actually set a block for 12 and under users, 10 min daily limit, no email, no IM's etc etc etc), as well as daily reports broken into a dozen catagories are sent to my email daily.

You can get around AOL blocking very easily and I am sure a 10 year old can do that without issue.

Really??? Seems only way is with "MY" password(she'll never get)...weather I am there when the block happens(her screen name open), or when SHE emails me a request...

Tell me more,please

I was amazed I had to unblock Icarly and the disney channel. Also am amazed at my email when I read the sites that are blocked(which is a click link right to the site) they seem almost on a 1st grade level..I was guessing that the site itself had been breached in the past and maybe that was the block factor.

She can't use ANY search engine (Internet Explorer is blocked),but the aol kids ( which actually kinda sux ) I thought I'd keep the settings set pretty tight for the summer...

I do have "computer cop" software, but opted out not to install it.. As aol seems already too tight for my own interest for her. CC even has keystroke memory for spying.

Thanks for all the info though for everyone.

Joe

side note..When my daughter was 3,on my lap, and I was a newbie to the net, I open a link for free chuck e chesse tokens only to have a screen full of checker board porn pixs. I spent the next 1/2 day learning and blocking that non-sence..(which basically just makes you click one more "OK" button on ADULT settings un restricted. That experience was the biggest eye-opener/learner as a parent. And have been a net police kinda guy since then..

My kids have been playing online for a couple of years now and know they are only allowed on the sites that are bookmarked for them.
We learned the hard way last summer that they aren't allowed to use youtube without a parent there. The girls found some pretty interesting videos on there LOL
They are great though...they ask for mommys help getting to whatever site they are interested in visiting which prevents them mis-typing and ending up on inappropriate sites

Google cyber stalking, while it is not an issue with a child of this age, it is a problem for kids in the latter years of grade school and middle school particularly. With the ability to connect to the Internet with phones, children have found innumerable ways to torture each other with false profiles, manipulating people's cells, etc.

My kids were allowed facebook and myspace accounts when they were I think around 12 only if I had their passwords. Kids don't think because they are kids. Because of the shirt styles today, I almost had a heart attack when I saw the picture of my daughter on one of her friend's pages. The girls were looking at the faces, good pic in that respect for both girls, but the first thing I saw was cleavage. That hadn't even occurred to her when they put up the pic, and she immediately took it down.

My 9 yo has had email since she was pretty young...like 4 because her father is military and I used it to teach her to spell and also to give her the outlet to contact him and not feel like he was unreachable ( had backfired now cause she expects him to email and he rarely bothers but I digress)

She hasn't asked yet to get facebook or myspace. Mostly she just plays educational games or webkinz... she likes to look at music videos on Youtube (you know the ones with the lyrics so she can sing along)

Of course the only working computer is in my room so I can keep a real close eye on her. She has been told what is/ is not acceptable and if she breaks the rules she loses the computer.

As it stands right now she doesn't even know the password to her own email because of her disrespecting those boundaries. I thought that would upset her but she seems to be ok with it.

My 6 year old also has an account but neither of them get on without me here. I lock the computer when I leave.

150 minutes a day? What in the world would a 7-year-old need to be doing online for 2-1/2 hours a day? That's a lot of time spent sitting in a chair!

Thanks Jax...REALLY THANKS

I am now very disappointed at aol...I actually was swayed to paying the extra 25 a month for aoltv/movies and more so for the Parental Controls as my net service is with another provider at 80 a month and could have keep the aol toolbar/and screen for free.

Knowing others screen names and passwords are the PARENTS job... BUT

Yesterday with only linking within 5 mins... I managed to open IE,,and YES it allowed me ANYWHERE on the net... I sent an email to aol, I will post there response when they answer..

Now last night I played on her SN for over 1/2 hour and could not (still before aol email) link anywhere with IE.. Nor could I do a proxy serch.which until last night did not even know what a proxy(internet was)

A search of "Removing Parental block"....or....." Removing company internet blocks" takes you to more then enough links on how to do it...so sad.

My concern was never what she was doing or talking to...We are clear on that... My main concern was adult material, and the fake links..

"Fake Links"= Where a keystroke one letter over to misspell barbie, disney, webkidz, etc....is a PORN site.

Not to turn this into a safety internet topic, but I think I speak for a lot of parents that woulds more then welcome any information and help into this matter posted here.

150 minutes a day? What in the world would a 7-year-old need to be doing online for 2-1/2 hours a day?

Tat is for the total time within every 24 hour day...NOT one setting.

OUR computer is used as a tv and is hooked to home stero(I watch news from around the world and TV in Australia)... In other words. My daughter can go to the 10's of thousands of TV shows from the 50's, thru 90's and pull up ANY episode and watch..

Also remember she is only 7.. That 5-10 min email we write to grandmom or aunt, takes her 1/2 hour or more..

There are a gillzillion games...

So while 2 1/2 hours might seem like a lot at one sittings... She Does not go on play station, no hand held games, and TV she watches through aoltv is not viewable through dish.

note Aoltv and the 1,000's of movies at aol is shorter on HER screen name..

I'm guessing language and violence made aol block them... She likes watching the 60's sitcoms..

Hope that clears up the 2 1/2 hours(I actually was gonna start a 4, but then she picks up a couple hours more watching tv...remember.....it's summer now/no school).. I strongly doubt many 7 year olds spend less time in front of a screen when adding the factor for its also used for games and tv...

After reading this, I feel like the meanest mother or one that hides her kids under a rock.

my twins are 5, 6 in October. they have never been on a computer, watched TV for the first time this year, and have no clue what a wii or a playstaion is.
i just dont really see the point. computers are important part of today's world, yes. But I figure they can learn that skill later in life. Myself, and many of the other parents that are my age did not have the internet till they were in their teens and we figured it all out just fine, why cant the kids of today do the same
. right now i would much rather them stick to paper and pencil and master their writing skills the old fashioned way.

2-1/2 hours online plus a couple more watching TV? sorry but that's way too much screen time. My kids are 13 and 15 and they don't spend that much time in front of a screen w/the exception of watching movies once or twice a week. And the fact that it's summer they're online less, not more, because they're not researching or writing papers. Summer means more time to read and play and actively explore the world, not more time to sit in front of a screen.

lorelei, that's his preference so why lecture him on why can or can't.

I use firefox, and it's more secure and stable than internet explorer. you can also block certain sites so it doesn't promote adult content. getting a guest signup is a great idea, that way she doesn't have access to your information which you'd have to continue to change. she may like having her own account.

as for the instant messages, i'm not sure if you can turn it off if you have aol but it's a good idea to talk to her about what to do when there's an instnat messenger. even putting the age at 15 may bring more instant messenger. i have seen the news on this from time to time. Best thing is to tell her to close it off rather than talk to someone, because it will just lure them to talk to the stranger more and may give tidbids on her and where she lives, etc. Luckily the child told her mom and she went to thep olice and they got the guy arrested for wanting to meet up with her and such. it is sad that we have to worry about this stuff but better safe than sorry so if you have to go thru the hassle of turning something on/off better safe than sorry.

here's a browser specifically meant for kids, perhaps after adding her own g uest account, she can go to the kids safe, and then it may help limit the security since what's already in the browser is secure;

A few sentences isn't exactly a lecture, but this is why:

...
Thoughts?

Plopping a young primary-school kid in front of an electronic box for hours at a time is irresponsible parenting, and looking for online blocks and net-nannies to replace parental supervision is even worse. Kids deserve better than lazy parents.
