Hallie, option #2. Give it a week. After it is yours to keep or donate.

Leona, I agree with you completely. I would also go with Option 2. Do not tell where you found the money or the exact amount. Let the person who lost it specify where they think they lost it and the amount. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I kept money that didn't belong to me, and options 3 & 4 really aren't feasible.

Edit: I agree with 1glassslipper, after a week, it's yours.

You did a great job on this thread, btw!

I would vote option 2. If not claimed by Friday, you and Hildy should enjoy a bottle of wine.

Hallie..
good thread that you created based on a real-life experience. I agree with most on here with #2 option and the amount or the "item" doesn't have to be disclosed.
Just mention that "something" was found and, then you will know if the person that lost it is being truly honest about it.
There have been a few times where I have haphazardly thrown a $20 dollar bill into my purse and not placed properly in my wallet and due to confusion, have lost it either falling out of my purse or just plain carelessness.
I had often wished that "someone" would be honest enough to turn it in and be a "good samaritan". I would do the same for someone else, knowing what it personally feels like. Nowadays, when I get money from the ATM, I immediately place it in the billfold section of my wallet so there is no mistake or loss in the future.

Good luck and hopefully it will be returned to the rightful owner. If not, a bottle of that J. Lohr Cabernet sounds good to me...

I very rarely start threads and one of the reason is I find it so frustrating, part of what I thought I posted wasn't here and then when I go to edit - and I always have to edit - everything gets screwed up).

Hallie Started a THREAD!!!

I just got home and signed on and I was SO excited!!!!

Well - nothing too inspirational to add. I thought there were some VERY good responses.

Makes me WONDER , since it appears that most of the forum POSTERS would take the 'honest' approach, what the forum DELETERS would have to say??????

Hallie, you have SUCCESSFULLY posted a thread that apparently NOBODY voted to delete!!!!

Hallie - I agree with #2 also but was told this by a cousin and found it interesting

My cousin was at a casino playing the slots and decided to use one of the rest rooms. She goes into a stall only to find a bucket with coins in it. There is no one else in the rest room, she waits around a bit to see if anyone comes in to look for it and after a while, goes to one of the cashiers or attendants to tell them. She was told, you might as well keep it as even if you turned it into the casino, if a person came up and said they lost it, they would not have returned it to them. Apparently, people try to tell them they lose money quite a bit, plus, most wouldn't know exactly how much was in the bucket. Turns out it was about $50.00 in quarters. She turned around and played that into a few hundred. I figure to forget something like a bucket of money, the person either had to be really sick or really drunk???

My good friend and I always kinda find free stuff and we've decided if we find any money we'll just buy a 12 pack or bottle and have a great night. It'd be nice to turn it in but as long as you use it with a friend all of the negative karma should be negated.

Hallie...unfortunately,there are a few miserable people in this old world and misery loves company..it is mean but some people are very insecure so they like to create problems for others...
'NOW' you have reason to use that found $20.00 and go elsewhere for a fun time..

When I was a child,I used to walk with my daddy to the store and one day I asked him;
Why are you always looking down when you walk? His answer to me was; well honey, you ain't gonna find no money there, and don't you know that just a few more steps,my daddy said;look at that,so I looked just a few feet ahead of us and I'll be doggone if there wasn't a green bill crumple up on the sidewalk. I got so excited, that put a big smile on my daddy's face(seeing me so excited),so guess what my daddy did with that found money,he let me buy a big ole bag full of candy!!!
Oh how I miss my daddy!!! I love you Daddy,RIP

I know when I lost $20 dollars at work one day, I did let the front secretary know, just in case someone came and said they found it, which they didn't so "oh well" and life goes on. Now if I lost it in a store or someplace public, I wouldn't have reported it. I guess at work I was just being "hopeful" and figured nothing ventured nothing gained and at least tried.

LOL, Leslie, that happens to me sometimes too. I love it when that happens!!!

Ya know what just struck me as kinda funny. We walk around all the time and see, quarters, nickels, pennies and such on the ground. When we pick those up and pocket them, we don't think anything of it. But when it comes to paper money, that seems to make the difference. I know if I lost $20.00, I would just figure it was gone. It would hurt, but how many really would return it? First you would have to know for sure where ya lost it at

Hallie, sorry to hear about that party thread. Seems to be happening all over lately for what ever reasons

The story your father taught you was sweet

I will 'never' forget that story Hallie, and many more!!

walk around all the time and see, quarters, nickels, pennies and such on the ground.

^^^ You know all those coins we see on the ground adds up!!
I took 2 of my grandkids on a very nice vacation last year on 'coins' that I saved,of course I gave the kids the job of counting them and putting them into rolls (that helps them learn Math)!!! I take advantage of any situation I can to teach my kids (grown now) and my grandkids!! I think I am a smart Grandma!!! LOL
I never spend my coins(except pennies for tax),I always break a dollar just so I get coins back and I throw them in my 'piggy' bank and save up for fun times!!!

All this talk about saving your coins and how they ADD up, reminded me of something!!!

I am sorry that I do not remember WHO to give the credit to, but I read not too terribly long ago, the following (I'm paraphrasing it):

"I use to just see a penny on the ground and just pass it up thinking "it is JUST a penny'! I wouldn't bother to stoop down to pick it up! I was walking along someone the other day who stooped down to pick up a penny! I commented that 'why bother' how much is a penny worth these days??? The person held the penney in their hand and said to me: "Every Penny has the words IN GOD WE TRUST on it. I will never knowingly walk on or ignore a penny."!!!

I know that story is a bit 'shmaltzy', but I have never been able to NOT pick up a penny since!!!!

Last week I saw a wad of money at one of the food places in the food court at THE HARD ROCK HOTEL AND CASINO ..it was on the floor...and near a guy with a big bandage on his ear??? who looked befuddled and was going thru his pockets...I figured it was his and pointed it out and he scooped it up and didn't even say thanks LOL

I GUESS it was his ...however later I thought...uh oh..maybe some other person dropped it and I just "gave it away" to the guy?? well with the huge ear bandage I guess he needed it

as for the $20 you found...hard to say , depends on the size of the office building.
perhaps the receptionist will help?? "did anyone loose anything"?

or you could always give it to your favorite charity?

Recently I read about an odd finders/keepers situation, in the UK : a couple found a winning lottery ticket...the woman who lost it was able to sue for half the money
It was not a HUGE prize *(about $80 US $$ ) and the woman who lost the ticket is getting about $40k ...
that seemed pretty odd to me....not sure where "finders keepers" starts and ends

Hallie - that is my point. We pick up change from the ground and think nothing of trying to find it's rightful owner. Yes, it does all add up. Not even sure if we found just a $1.00 bill, that we would try to find the owner, but somewhere down the line, it becomes an issue. So, my question would be, where do you draw the line??? $5.00, $10.00 or what????

...I once found a 100$ bill half buried in the sand, waving at me from the tideal motion 5' under water, with teeny barnacles on it,while I was snorkeling at south Lido beach. At first I thought it was a 1000$ bill (wishful thinking)it had a '56 print date, and thought it might be worth more so took it to a coin shop, nope worth only 100 buck's. I kept it, bought the bird's some food and had a great dinner date.....keep it Hallie.

Jim - Jewelry would really be a different matter indeed. Jewelry, whether it be costly or not, may have sentimental value to the owner. If that is the case, it can never be replaced. You did the RIGHT thing!!
