The libertarians and strict Constitutionalists should like this move somewhat. There is no provision in the Constitution for the federal government to explore space. However, NASA will simply curb manned exploration, not unmanned. And NASA still exists-- much repealing remains to be done.

You know how NASA really got started, not by the wonders of man exploring space, like it portrays today but by fear of the Russians spying on the U.S. gov and fearing the that they would build satellites capable of launching nukes from outer space into the U.S. and thus NASA was created.

Anyone actually believe Kennedy's speech about being the U.S being first to place a man on moon was really about a space race? When you are at the height of the cold war and the Russians are planing on going to the moon for some reason in which the U.S. had no idea why the Russians were so adamant about going to the moon, you get really start to get fearful that they may have cynical reasons behind it. So if you are the U.S. you got to go to the moon now. I mean, what if instead Kennedy saying this..

"We choose to go to the moon. We choose to go to the moon in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard"

He really said this...

"We have to go to the moon in this decade, because the Russians are planning to do the same thing and we might be fearful that they are wanting to build military bases on the moon capable of spying on our intel and capable of launch nuclear weapons from the moon that we cannot not defend against down on eath."

If that was the actual speech, It would have put everyone in in the U.S. in a frenzy, but that was the real reason behind it. The Russians were soo secretive about their space program that the U.S. gov had no idea what they were intending on using it for and when word got out that the Russians were wanting to go to the moon by the end of the 1960's NASA all of a sudden went into complete overdrive trying to do the same thing so that they can be one step of head of the Russians incase the Russians had cynical intentions of using the moon as some sort of military space platform.

It's no secret that NASA still launches secret military satellites to this day for the smilitary So it really shouldn't be a surprise what NASA has been really all about for since it was founded. NASA isn't going away, the exploration part might get cut but the under belly of NASA's military part in which it was founded upon will never get cut.

We cannot afford NASA. As awesome as it would be to have a cool space program and all that, this is reality.

We cannot keep paying everyone's food and medical bills, maintain 11 carrier battle groups, and still have an advanced space program. The country does not make enough wealth to do that much and still have new cars, big screens, and keep their AC at 65. Politicians don't seem to grasp that labor, energy, and goods don't come out of nowhere, and this is why we are running such huge deficits.

Budgets to them are abstract figures that they try and play numbers games with. In reality, it represents how much time and labor you are taking from the people, and there isn't enough to go around.

Sorry I thought what you meant was what you said:

All we need to do is get rid of a bunch of useless military spending.

Also, getting rid of any significant portion of our military spending would necessitate that Europe and our allies in the Pacific start shouldering some of the burden.

The military spending is not useless. It's spent on things that it needs to be spent on, it just doesn't need to be only us doing it. The current situation leaves us holding the bill for defending and securing Europe, northern Africa, the Persian gulf, the southeast Asian states, and the Pacific at large, and then add in our own borders and waters. And lately, we've taken up the additionally responsibility of patrolling the eastern edge of Africa and securing all maritime traffic originating in the Suez Canal.

Maybe someone else can pitch in?
