Well it's not too tough if you are into musicianship and aren't limited to MTV type stuff--

Robert Fripp
Vernon Reid
Ty Tabor
Chris DeGarmo
Ric Hordinski
Phil Keaggy
Darryl Stuermer
David Rhodes
Frank Gambale
Charlie Hunter
Walter Becker
John Scofield

As a very good amateur guitarist once told me, "We're a dime a dozen. Now a good bassist or drummer, that's something rare."

Frank has been around a long time...I saw M.Rush 3 times...still fantastic music today. One of my most fav. guitarplayers , besides Frank, Urich Roth... the early Scorpions' guitarplayer. My most fav. song...."Polar Nights" has the untouchable, and most unique sounding leads...with so much feeling. Even to this day...I still cry hearing it. I would rewind that song to hear that lead..(.I ruined 3 tapes.)..I have 2 album copies...it is as wonderful and vibrant as the time it was recorded. It just chews up and spits out those notes and sounds like nothing else I have heard in years. Truly orgasmic licks!!

If your into shredding, then go check out Shawn Lane.

The guy was one of the more skilled players ever.

To bad he passed away while still being unknown.

no. the artists i listen to are already known. MOST guitar players i admire already have a following. i'm following this thread to find new ones. i'd rather not insult the guitar loving community by naming guys like marty friedman or jason becker.

but i 'll give ya 2: mike collins and dave shannon. they're in my band and they're unreal.

i bagged on 2 players. go listen to the solo on "cult of personality" and tell me it rocks with a straight face.

-Lonnie Johnson (not to be confused with the 1930's blues player Robert Johnson) was the very first true lead guitarist, who performed & recorded amazing leads on acoustic guitar in the mid 1920's with Louis Armstrong & Duke Ellington, just to name a couple.

-Harvey Mandel, "the Snake" album!!!!

-GradyMartin, a Nashville studio musician who came up with some classic riffs & lead on some vintage songs: "Pretty Woman" by Roy Orbison; "Train kept a Rollin" by the Rock n roll trio, & "Don't Worry" by Marty Robbins.

-Johnny Guitar Watson's 1950's stuff. Big influence on Frank Zappa & Steve Miller.

-Ollie Halsall of the early 70's British group Patto. He was WAY ahead of his time. Just listen to his soloing on the tune "Loud Green Song'!!! Eddie Van Halen was influenced by him.

-Gabor Szabo, a 1960's Hungarian jazz guitarist who highly influenced Carlos Santana. He wrote "Gypsy Queen", which Carlos tagged on to the outro of "Black Magic Woman". Check out Szabo's 1960's album "Spellbinder". He also influenced George Benson to some degree, & Benson stole Szabo's arrangement of the song "Breezin".

Terry Kath, the late Chicago guitarist, died in '78.
Tommy Bolin, former James Gang and Deep Purple, died in 76
Paul Kossoff, former Free, died in '76
Ronnie Montrose - I still love his debut record with a young unknown Sammy Hagar on vocals.

As I get older and I meet people playing guitar and they go on about this or that guitar player, I'm reminded of all the great players that never made the big time or were only there for a while. Some died before they were famous... some were well known in the guitar playing community but my list might start like:

Nick Drake
Wes Montgomery
John McLaughlin
Allan Holdsworth
Frank Marino
Peter Green

and all those great guitar players in all those cool early 70s italian prog bands like P.F.M., Banco, Osanna, Area, AlphaTaurus, etc.

John McLaughlin: I know who he is. I saw him live from the 3rd row. It was when the Visions of The Emerald Beyond album was out. But my favorite is Birds of Fire. Some of those other names are familiar too.

Paul Gilbert....one of the best ever
Joe Satriani .....king of melody
Guthrie Govan.....oh my god...really he makes me sick...too good.
Tobi Abasi..sp? New kid on the block plays an 8 string and listen to "wave of babies" SHIT!!!
Ty Tabor....has phrasing that's sooooo good.
Greg Howe....the BEST black shred guitarist on the planet... listen to anything he does...notes pour like water out of him.
Nuno Bettencourt...awesome and misunderstood at times.
Marty Friedman ....best guitarist Megadeth ever had.
Dime bag Darrel....I miss you bud...you made a new style of metal all by yourself
Michael angelo Batio....who in hell can do the shit he does..??? NO ONE...

Finally, John5 gets a mention. And, a nice one at that. Trivia: When he's on tour, while the rest of the band is out partying, he finds a local guitar teacher and trades notes and maybe takes a lesson. Ever growing, ever evolving.
