I'm currently lovin' a band called Breaking Benjamin.
Try YouTube search for:
"Until the end"
"I will not bow"
for starters. I'm not usually into distorted guitars and screaming, but these guys are great!

I recommend nearly everything on artinplay's list. Dillinger Escape Plan/Between The Buried and Me/Defeater are easily in my top 10. For metal check out bands like Every Time I Die, The Bled, and Botch. If you like Hardcore Have Heart is a must, Verse is very good, and Modern Life is War is also amazing.

Given what you listen to I'd suggest The Haunted, Cave In - start with Until Your Heart Stops, Every Time I Die, Dillinger Escape Plan, Isis, Botch, and errr... Clutch ;)

Some mathcore in there which should be entertaining and make you realise that Slipknot have too many band members and aren't really that good.

I used to be into the generic metal scene, but I found better music. Support your local music scene too, there are some very good underground bands who need the support.

I'll leave you with a bit of Electric Wizard if the forum allows it.

Trouble-run to the light
DRI-thrash zone, 4 of a kind, violent pacification, the list goes on and on...
Exodus- fabulous disaster( amazing album!!)
Sanctuary-refuge denied(nevermore's singers first band)
Anthrax-among the living
Love/hate-blackout in the red room(la sleaze rock, but the album is a classic!!!!)
Slayer-south of heaven, seasons of the abyss
Death angel-the ultra-violence(epitome of thrash!!!)
SOD-speak English or die
Sepltura-chaos ad
Sacred reich-surf Nicaragua
Nuclear assault-survive
Life of agony-river runs red
Fear factory-demanufacture
Faith no more-the real thing( amazing album from cover to cover)
Flotsam and jetsam- no place for disgrace(Jason Newstead)

The Silent Comedy and Saint Motel are two of my favorites. Check them out on Youtube and see what you think. I don't know if you would consider either of these bands rock because its kind of hard to figure out their genre but they are still great bands in my opinion. The guys of Saint Motel met in film school and they have some amazing videos for an indie band!!!

Well, the thing is, if the people you are referring to are only listening to post 1988 Ministry, they are basically hearing metal (industrial metal, but metal nonetheless). Sure you pop in With Sympathy (which AJ has pretty much disowned by the way) and they are hearing a different genre (80s europop mixed with new romantic music). It's not their categorization that shows a narrow taste, they are calling it like they see it--they never heard the wimpy eurotrash Ministry started out playing. If a band changes genres, then they become classifiable in however many genres they choose to dabble in--but nearly always will be classified by the masses as part of the latest genre they choose to dabble. The exception would be bands like TMBG and Ween who change genres several times per album.
