Worst Job You Ever Had...Page 1 of 3    (1, 2, 3)
I was chatting to my teenager and his friends yesterday who are all at the age where they are thinking about a part-time job around their studies. The conversation lead to some of the jobs my friends and I had when we were their age.

Of course, my son only knows me as an adult, and so he was highly amused by some of the jobs I described having/trying as a teen.

The summer I was 16, my friend and I took jobs at a local factory which manufactured car parts. My job was to manually punch 16 evenly spaced holes in a cardboard tube and thread a short copper wire into each hole before securing in place using scotch tape ! LOL

These were then passed to the next person in the production line to connect a reel of copper to each of the wires I had put in place before 'spinning' the tube on a machine to make a coil.

God - it was mind-numbing. We were even required to raise our hand like school-children if we needed to use the bathroom because a 'supervisor' needed to come and take our position in the line so not to interrupt production. I didn't even last a week before having to resign - some of the women worked there for decades !

So, just for fun, what was the worst job you ever had ?

Nothing fun about the worst job I ever had.

BUT

Funniest "bad job" for me was a DJ for 2 weeks.

I came on after
BACK TO THE BIBLE.at the end it said
AND THAT was baaaaaaaaack to the bible.

One day I played. If You Want To Get To Heaven...(you got to raise a little hell) as soon as the ending words stopped.

So, just for fun, what was the worst job you ever had ?

The one(s) that paid me less than I thought I was worth, where I had to deal with other employee's that I didn't like, all in a corporate culture that I didn't fit into.
Other than that I've found most "jobs" to be the same.

I’ve done soldering on an assembly line (television parts) and did cleaning in a hospital, but luckily I never had a turd fly at my mouth…

Probably the worst job I’ve had was working at Dunkin Donuts for about a week. The manager was a perverted d!ck who liked to sit in his office and watch us on the monitor. Within a couple days he calls me back there and says I’m getting written up because he saw me hanging on the customers. Um, really? So he shows me the actual footage he had all ready to bust me…I told him that was me saying goodbye to my boyfriend, so he changed my write up to hanging on boyfriend.

Then I got an early shift, like 4 am. My two co-workers were telling me, “Oh, this is the worst shift, it’s so busy, it’s so overwhelming…blah blah blah.” And then they went in the back to make donuts and left me there all by myself. When my senses returned to me I went in the back and told them I was leaving. They freaked out and said I couldn’t leave without calling the manager. I said, “Bye,” and walked out the door.

Man that job sucked.

I worked at this factory that made carpet molds for cars and trucks (that would later have the actual carpet attached to it). The 'ovens' that these molded pieces came out of were HUGE! Eight feet high (some were bigger) by 12 feet long. My first day on the job...it was summer and hotter than holy h*ll in there. LOTS of fans blowing nothing but hot air. Ugh it was bad!! Lunch time finally rolls around and im looking around at all these people who looked like they all just pee'd their pants (sweating profusely), and t-shirts clinging to their wet, sweaty bodies . I remember overhearing one guy saying how it was cooler in there that day than it was the day before at 130*!! After lunch i slowly walked back to my oven and the guy who was training me. By the time i got there, i had made up my mind. I grabbed my purse and started walking away and he says, "Hey!! Hey you can't leave!",......my only reply was, "Watch me!".

Wondering how many people passed out from dehydration in that place?? One day, actually half a day (lol), was more than enough for me!!

I think my worst job was also one of my best. After I had my B.A. and passed the basic skills test for teaching but didn't have my credential I decided I wanted to see if I liked the job so I took a position as a special education assistant in a special ed school which was ages 3-21.
There were no permanent openings so I floated. Most of what I did was feed and diaper severely handicapped teens/adults. I remember the first day having to blend their food in a blender and feed it to them and then diaper them. They'd sit on these little portable potties and I'd have to kneel down and wipe them (these were the teens and young adults-fully uh, developed) and some of them would stick their hands in the toilet and then grab my hair. The first day I started crying and gagging-this was just at the feeding point and I was going to run out but I forced myself to calm down and I stayed (and later on ate my lunch in the next room in between feedings and diaperings just like the other assistants-a real champ)
I learned more at that job in a year or so than most of my other jobs in years of work. I also learned that even the severely disabled kids were higher functioning than most people think they are and tests are not always the best measure of intelligence/awareness.
I remember waiting for the busses in the morning and they'd either run to me or come in their wheelchairs. They knew who I was. And when we'd have ice cream they'd get all excited and hyper just like any kids. It turned out to be one of my best experiences once I got through the first few days. A lot of the women were older and this was their career and they were hilarious. They got me through the first week or so with their jokes. God bless them for dedicating their lives to such tough work. I have the utmost respect for them.

I guarantee I’ve held two of the worst jobs ever… hands down.

I worked detailing cars for around six months when I had gone back to school. You’d be amazed at what people would allow in their vehicles and not clean up – everything from animal feces to vomit. The building I worked in wasn’t air conditioned, and I went home every day soaked from both washing the vehicles and in sweat from it being so damned hot.

I also spent an autumn slaughtering and dressing chickens. I don’t know if anyone one that hasn’t worked a farm has smelled chicken shyte, but it’s one of the rankest odours I’ve ever encountered. I would shower before going home, and again when I would get home and I’d still have a slight lingering of that offensive smell happening… then I realized, the smell was in my nose. It was years before I could eat chicken after that little experience.

Both of those experiences make me appreciate the position I hold today.

Haven't thought about the smell of a chicken farm for years ! LOL. I gagged just reading your post !

The area of the UK I came from is surrounded by agricultural land. And yes, the chickens are by far the worst.

Raised on a dairy farm, I did my share of excrement management, and the slaughter and processing of our farm animals and deer harvests. I thought nothing could gross me out until I spent 3 days on the kill floor of a nearby kosher meat packing plant. It was one of my first jobs away from the farm. I was not prepared for the barbarity of the kosher killing process then, nor the rancid smells that accumulated as the day went on, nor being awash in all sorts of bovine bodily fluids.

This was before OSHA or Temple Grandin. The animals were bellowing loudly as they lined up through the process. The noise alone was almost too much to bear. One by one, the animals were placed in a chute, slightly stunned, enough to insert a hook in their hind leg, hoisted up by that leg, still bellowing, and moved on down the disassembly line toward the Rabbi, who would slice it's jugular to let it bleed out while conscious. After that the skinning and disembowelment processes, then onward into the cooler to cool down before the deboning floor. My job was moving barrels of organs around, juices of all sorts sloshing and splattering. I could not get the smell out of my clothing or nostrils. I lasted through the trial process and made it to the boning room, working first at the trim table and eventually becoming a boner...yes that is what they were called instead of deboner...funny either way with the germans immigrants there. Being hardened to the killing process on the farm where we did it quick and with little if any anguish, did not prepare me for kosher killing as it was done there. Yeah..war is far worse, but more of an obligation than a job.

Lint spotter...I'll take your chickensh*t and raise you pig feces. I thought that cleaning out pig barns was the worst waste management smell, until I had to help a friend clean out his motel pool after an 8 inch deluge washed the waste of several septic tanks into the bottom of it. Pigs ain't got a thing over us smellwise. Helping Chuck actually turned into the worst job on that 90 degree day, but I did it out of friendship, so the kill floor remains etched into memory as the worst job.

Hard to say, there were quite a few. I guess the worst was picking herring roe on a little floating processor in Alaska. The fish had to be fairly rotten before the roe sacs set and popped out. Forty years later I still have overdeveloped muscles in my thumbs from choking herring. And it destroyed all the clothing I had with me, the smell simply would not come out no matter what I did. But you do get used to it. No seafood canneries are great places to work. King and tanner crab are the best, but shrimp, your fingers turn blue from the cold and fish poisoning was common from spines breaking off in fingers. Cooked for canning was okay, picking shells for freezing - that was the one that made me quit and turn to waitressing.

Next worst would have been picking filberts in Oregon. The orchard was used most of the year as pasture for beef cattle, and crawling around all over cow pies is not for the faint hearted.

I suppose there were others, but there were enough redeeming factors to make them not so bad, after all.

As for the chicken shit, oh, yeah. One of the first places I lived after leaving the midwest forever was in a line cabin on a ranch in northeastern Oregon. The wood stove that heated it had spent many years as a roost in a chicken coop, and the first time it got hot - yowza! While it never did lose the aroma, it was never again quite so bad, either.

Gosh; I would do stuff like that between real jobs just to stay in shape!!

You're right though; super hard work. (and, in my case, I knew it was only temporary; with my own prerogative being all that kept me there)

I was surprised at how many of us have "worst jobs" involving getting food from the sea or the farms to the populace ... I spent two summers of my life, working as a (mostly) unpaid farm laborer on my folks' farm ... I worked from dawn to after dusk in plus 100 degree weather ... on getting the plants to market ... cotton, wheat, alfalfa, raisins/grapes ... after dark, I helped out with the animals ... chinchillas, chickens and milk cows ... our chickens were free range so didn't smell ... the chinchillas, on the other hand ...

if you're looking for a thankless, low-paying, never-ending and exhausting job ... try working at one of those old-fashioned dairies where the cows were milked by hand twice a day ... if you weren't lugging in hay and grains to FEED them, you were shoveling out the leftovers they plopped onto the barn floor!

I was a skinny little kid back then, too ... never quite hit the 100 lb. mark but was lugging bales of hay around! got hit in the head while loading hay onto a wagon, fell unconscious, was almost run over by the tractor ... dangerous work for a little kid ...

but ... gotta admit ... bad as the fish sounded ... that kosher plant sounded the worst ... gag ...

I worked as a "process engineer" for a Japanese Tier 1 auto supplier. The worst job and company I ever worked for. I was put into a job I had no background in into a dept. that I wasn't even interviewed in. The last job I had before that was a Tool Design Engineer in aerospace. I had to deal with a bunch of procedures and red tape I had no familiarity with. My first day on the job one of the engineers told me about the high rollover rate there. He said he saw people quit on their first week of the job. They were a sweat shop. They expect you to work lost of unpaid overtime. That was the worst job/employer I ever had.

My kids aren't teenagers or even young adults anymore, since they are both in their mid to late 30s. My son has been a full time commercial fisherman since he was 14 or 15. He says he kills fish for a living. My daughter was babysitting from the age of 8, and when she reached high school, she was a live in mother's helper for a friend who had a bunch of foster children. A couple years while she was still in high school, she spent taking care of kids at remote fish camps, and in her spare time (hah) she worked at the closest cannery, on a salmon slime line. They know the value of money, and they know what it means to earn what they have. My son says he doesn't see any point in going to college, he can learn on his own just by reading the textbooks if he wants - and he frequently does just that. My daughter is working her way one semester at a time, paying her own way through school. But she also has a new baby now, so she's put the last semester on hold for awhile. But she definitely intends to finish in the not so distant future. Most of their friends are doing the same kind of thing, earning their own way through life.

There's nothing like life in a small town where everyone is productive in one way or another, and that's what the kids grow up thinking life is all about.

1) Ball collector at a driving range that just opened and who's owners couldn't afford a tractor to fetch the golf balls. The "ball collection" budget included a piece of half inch plywood with a handle screwed onto it that operated like a shield, a milk crate for holding the balls and two kids, me and my neighbor friend Mike. We switched roles a lot. The best job was shield holder as the actual ball collecting required venturing out from behind the wood and occasionally getting beaned by every a**hole who drew a beed on you with his three iron. The owner wouldn't let us leave until every ball was collected or until our moms phoned around midnight and chewed him out.

2) MMMMMmuffin mascot. MMMMMuffins hired me to wear their MMMMMuffin suite and stand on the busiest street in town hawking muffins. My task was to wave at the cars driving by. Not so bad. But I couldn't see where I was walking and tripped. I fell into the street, rolled a few muffin lengths out into the middle and caused a big ole accident. I'm not sure, but I think that may have brought the franchise down.

3) Sheet metal roofer in Phoenix, AZ. I used to stand in front of the Circle K on Alma School Road with my Mexican buddies hoping for day labour. Being from Canada, I was in the same green card boat when my Student Visa work limit expired every year around June. I used to do some unholy things but carrying sheet metal reflecting every ray the sun ever produced directly back into my face during a 120 degree day was the worst. I learned a lot of Spanish though, enough to say "F'ck this. May I swim in your pool?". Its all been gravy from there.

No wonder they kill em and eat em hu?

I've heard an awful lot of stories about farm duties from, both, my mom and my dad. My grandfather owned a farm, where he rented out to the stockyards.

That took alot of work.

I had one painting those address numbers on the curb.
Hey...someone's gotta do it.

I heard that pays well!

Worst job?

Sorting tomatoes in a hot room assembly line belt from most rotten to sort of rotten under the watchful eye of video cameras in case we wanted to steal said tomatoes.
Serious, they were worried about theft of rotten food - and you had to stand the entire time.

I lasted almost the entire day then can recall my joy quitting trying to make my way out with someone saying behind my back - what about your paycheck - I said - keep it I never want to return here lol It was below minimum wage :(
The owner claimed he could do that because it was considered farming labor.

I've shoveled cat shit as tall as my knees (don't ask) but that building was worse.
I cringe when I go past the building thinking of those actually working there and their torment.
