The difference between a Poet and a Musician...Page 1 of 2    (1, 2)
"A poet is a musician who can't sing. Words have to find a person's mind before they can touch their heart, and some people's minds are woeful small targets. Music touches their hearts directly no matter how small or stubborn the mind of the one who listens"

Actually, a poet is just a musician who can't get laid.

When I write I speak from my mind, heart, and soul unabridged.
Its a creative release of a song within me even though you cant hear the notes.
Maybe some can feel them and the tune isnt nice or it plain sucks.
Great post and topic of discussion but it belongs in the off topic forum unless it actually contains poetry.

...and poets get laid lots btw...

In response to Fennris and Lovelikewinter -

Try thinking before puking your stupidity -
or just shut the fug up until you learn better -
if in your case that's genetically possible

I hope the reasonable folks on here will forgive me,
but I have to unleash this one - it just seems SO appropriate

Turd Lunch

You know sh!t that flies
will soon come to rest
pray crap that you launch
don't land on your chest
The very same feces
from your tongue that flew
will be the same sh!t
that will splat on you
The dung you have sprung
your life will ingest
the poo that you've flung
is sh!t you'll digest

Aaaahh! I feel much better now - just like a good dump

Watch out! There's sh!t in that snowball! (dirty little elf b*stard)

If bricking requires only wheaties
what do I get for spinach in a can?
cause when I was little it turned
Popeye from a mouse to a man,
so curiosity is having me ask
what if I cook you a whole pot?
maybe I'll get more than hope
and I wish that might be a LOT!

In response to bcostello, It's called a joke you old pissy jackass. Don't call someone stupid just because they don't go around bashing everyone's fun and live in a delusional self-adoring world.

Eating my way into a diabetic coma is far more entertaining than these threads these days...

seems as if all the good kitties don't want to play
and the bad ones just scratch
gotta watch out for that
sometimes
you can catch
strange things

Be especially careful of sipping from streams
I drank from a stream
one cool spring morning
I drank from a stream
with a lost, lonsome mourning tone
to my mind
in my heart
all the time
I drank from springs
and cried soft tears against flannel pillowcases
and stained matress
beneath

Sometimes I let my feet
get black
take a toothpick
and carve out little designs in the coal dust
just to feel alive
would you like to draw with me sometime?

Foolish people think they can hang
up the holler
where things get strange
and old men
linger far too long
around far too many late nights
old country western songs
about whoring around
and midnight poker games

Can you live the sort of way
where you save up coupons
to buy more cigarettes
at the store
and they treat them like cash
does it burn your ass
to see me resonant
sleepy
and childlike in my responses

I feel like a puppet
on a string
everyone knows
you are my master
but I never told them
a thing...

Sorry babe
I get so crazy
sorry babe
I tend to be lazy
and plan things
that will probably never happen
because I'll get distracted
by some hill
and thoughts of you
hunting mushrooms

I am not allowed to love you anymore
I told myself long ago
that you died
and I was through
so I'm not going to write anymore poetry
sit all day long staring at the t.v.
and wonder
when the worlds
will walk my way again...
My friend
I have walked
so far

and only been in your car
once.

you treated me like some dunce
but I'm gonna show you
how stupid I can be

mistakes happen once
but the best ones always come in three.

Sorry! That is not true! Most poets write their poetry with a tune in their head, and probably can sing it while they are at it! Playing an instrument is the trick. Picking out a tune with one hand just doesn't get the chords in there.
Afterall, many many poets are lyricists and vice-versa. They just need a partner to accompany them!

Gee:

Here I am still blowin' the blues on a harp
Stevie Ray Vaughan never key 'B' sharp

Never matter
Simple small
Drunk always
Ten feet tall

Politics smoke cigar
Sensual interns
Enjoyed afar
Never inhaled.

The difference between poets and musicians?

Fvcked if I know ....

Please enlighten me, then.

If poetry and music are all about misery, with no sense to it, then all hail chaos. Fvck that. If one throws paint at a canvass expressing anger, is that 'art'? Are words thrown randomly in anger that as well? Music?

Give your collective heads a shake.

Passion is expressed by gifted artisans, culminating in appreciation for the experience. Ya can't blow the blues without having experienced life.

Oh, whatever. Just some thoughts.

Regards kind,

Tom.

^that's so perfectly put, joy!

and from tee,"Passion is expressed by gifted artisans, culminating in appreciation for the experience. Ya can't blow the blues without having experienced life." i so agree.

and from kitty, "poetry is music for my mind"... love that!

i must be schizophrenic then
if there is a difference between a poet and a musician
for i am both, though have not always been
raised to play two instruments from very young
hadn't found my poetic fun
then tried one day actually in this forum
found my heart and soul can play this way...

no, i don't hear notes when i write poetically
but i believe it all flows from the same source of creativity
and if one were to analyze this from the brain perspective
isn't it all right brained stuff that creates both music and poetry
while the left brain might instead be thinking scientifically
or mathematially...or incredibly logically....not a strength in me....

now one of my brothers is very gifted musically
he played at Carnegie Hall as a child - the piano classically
then took his talents beyond those realms
to create and play songs from his heart and soul....
so what's the difference between him and me?
simple, really....he's more talented musically
and can hear music to go with his poetry
or poetry to go with his music, maybe....

gosh - i can see how this question is quite tricky! :)

(sorry for the double post)...

got a clearer, quick thought...

the difference between my brother and me...
he can compose musically and poetically
where I can compose poetically, but only play musically

I can't help but to agree with Josh on this one.

do what you do, if you find a level of peace within it, then you've already won.

if someone wants to say that what they do is better, or holds a higher degree of validity, than what you do, let them.

at the end of the day it's about what brings you happiness, be it music, poetry, painting, masturbation, whatever.
