There's a thread about this on the Sexuality forum.

I read an excerpt. Poorly written and IMO pretty tame. Anne Rice's Beauty trilogy is MUCH better. Anais Nin's stories are classics.

alright. I was curious about these books since it got so much publicity. Opinion of a lifestyler is most appreciated. As far as classics, nothing beats Story of O :)

You can read some pages on Amazon. If you can get past the crappy high school level writing.

It's a great series.. I'm on the third book. I don't think the sex in it is over the top. However, it made me reconsider trying a few things I didn't think I would ever try.. :)

I've heard a lot about this book, and had planned on reading it. I'm not sure if I will. If I want to read a dirty book, I'll just read something by Bertrice Small. From the comments here, I'm thinking her books are more well-written any way.

Agreed, but The Marketplace series is just as good.

First person present tense. No thanks.

Agreed. I wrote sexier stuff in my teenage diary.

OP. You want a little literary heat, try Anne Rice writing as A.N. Roquelaure. ; )

vvvvvvvvvvvv You are very welcome. ; )

I haven't read the book, but I have heard about it ad nauseum on talk radio, network morning shows, etc. The author certainly has an excellent publicity team! Women have written and read erotica for ever, not sure what the big fuss is about.

The sexual euphemisms made me LOL and I never use LOL.

Compared to that I’m a twisted pervert.

Heard the hype, then was told it's badly written, which makes me think of an X-Rated Twilight Series... Bleh!

The movie is out. I won't go see it.

I think I'd find "Platoon" more romantic and with less violence.

Christian Grey is a grade A arsehole.

His sexual issues can be cured with one live round.

It's a very abusive relationship "prettied up."

Guano is still batshit.

I've heard so many times how badly written this book is but then why did it sell so well ????

It's not as if this is the first erotic book ever written so what gives ????

1)it is a fan fiction rip off of the Twilight series, which also was about control, just on a more minor scale

2)those who wanted more from it, find it poorly written. Those who want less, find what they are looking for.

which is the more "average" attitude, and therefore being average, is greater in number? the latter. so they bought it up in droves. and as they made it popular, their lemming friends jumped on the bandwagon, like they do with anything popular. and so more people bought the book.

"Salem's Lot" is a good vampire story.

I slogged through the first two chapters of "Twilight" (only the first book) and I ran out of steam.

I guess I need more action in my story lines. A nice car chase and some explosions...indulge me please!

Fifty Shades is referred to as a "housewife book" where I live. Not sure I know anyone whose read it. Only time it comes up in convo is someone making a bad joke about how poorly it's written. I've never even seen the cover.

EDIT:

Brace yourself, Meat.

Guess what books are the top-selling on the planet? Romance novels.

Hey, maybe this is just a sexed-up romance novel. I'm not going to read it to find out though.

This book sold well because ... How do I say it? Oh, the hell with it. It appeals to the stereotypical mainstream audience, just like the bad TV shows and movies do.

Happy now? Guess I'll have someone ticked off at me here, too.

I read it.
And yes it was poorly written which offended me far more than the content ever could.

The reason it was so successful is because it exemplifies and delves into a variety of fantasies beyond the obvious sexual.......

one of the women i'm seeing asked me to go see it with her and I refused.
I refused for three reasons.

I read about the movie and the plot on Wikipedia and it seems mundane.
I read the reviews and they were mostly poor.
I don't find the leading lady Dakota Johnson very sexy or appealing to ME.

then I opened my big mouth and said i'd go with her to see it if she went with me to see Kingsmen The Secret Service.

she agreed to that and saw the James Bond style spy movie last night.

now i'm stuck!
