I wanna sit next to uPage 1 of 4    (1, 2, 3, 4)
Last nite I hung out w/ a female friend. So we were at D*nnys (a chain 24 hr diner) & a young couple was sitting next to eachother in a booth, rather than facing eachother.

She said it was tacky. I said it was sweet & that if I were on a date w/ a man & I really liked him I'd do that & the guy always thought it was cute that I liked him so much that I wanted to be near him.

She made this awful face & said it was like a porno w/ a handjob under the table. She is far from a prude trust me on this...

Do you think if on a date & you like ur date & ur getting along & u say "I wanna sit next to u" that it is taken as a pervy sexual come-on or as a romantic gesture?

I asked a guy friend - he said: she doesnt get romance at all...a lot of women treat kissing or love making like taking a dump or hawking a luugi...lol...you expect guys to have that mindset but not women typically.

I swear human kinds jadedness is increasing exponentially every decade....weve come a long distance from the 70's and love story...now its all the wedding crashers...jeez.

Hope this thread stays :0)

I don't get it... I want to sit across from the person I am with so I can hold a conversation without getting a kink in my neck...

I can sit next to you at home or movies or anywhere else.... although I don't think there is anything sexual about sitting right next to someone... I do find that those are the people making out like the need to get a room... in which case being at dinner is the wrong place for them...

Wow, my ex and I ALWAYS sat next to each other at restaurants. We'd always request a booth and then sit on the same side of it. In those restaurants that didn't have booths, we'd feel weird sitting separately in chairs. And we were definitely not doing anything sexual. It was just.. I don't know, being close to each other, he could put his arm around me, I could rest my hand on his leg (not sexually), etc. But we're not the type to converse while eating, so...

Why bother with a hand job when she can go under the table and give a bj?

Yes, because every person in the world is so sex-crazed that if they are within arms length of someone, they must be doing something sexual under the table.

I feel sorry for your friend that she can't see simple romance and closeness without actual sex. I dated a guy for five years, and never once did we sit on opposite sides of the table. We were very affectionate, and we liked being able to touch each other, hold hands, etc. Most guys I date now don't seem to like sitting on the same side of the table, and it's something I actually miss from that relationship.

Speaking as someone who was banned from pretty much every 24 hour restaurant in a decent sized mid-west city a number of years ago, the managers of said restaurants really frown on such activities.

Same here... sometimes they have those circular-type booths where you can sit "closer" but still kind of facing each other... those are good.

My ex wife and I did this for 11 years, nothing unusual about it.

Aww brings back good memories :) There's one guy I dated that we always sat beside each other like that, well.. not always, but usually. I didn't like him too far away and he didn't seem to mind.

I personally think it's cute and wouldn't assume anything sexual or negative.

I prefer to sit across from someone I am dining with, but I have seen people sit next to one another and they just look exposed. How do you get privacy when you're facing an audience?

Ugh. I had a first date (years ago) from here. He and I agreed to meet for drinks in a restaurant that had a nice bar. He decided he wanted to have dinner as well once we were there. I was fine to stay at the bar but he wanted to move to a booth. I slid in and he slid in next to me. Right next to me. There was no wiggle room. It was so awkward. It looked like we were waiting for people to join us but started eating without them. I had to turn my entire body to speak with him and then turn back again to eat. I had nowhere to put my (tiny) purse as I was smooshed up against the wall.

I would never let this happen again. It was one of the most uncomfortable dinners I have ever had.

IF they sit on opposite sides of the table, who's to say someone isn't getting a foot job? People can think what they wish, it doesn't make it so. My opinion, if I am out with someone regardless of the stage of that "relationship" if this person desired to sit on the same side of the table, I would do it. I wouldn't give a damn what anyone thought of it.

it is MANDATORY that i sit next to my date in a booth or a table or anywhere.

i am very hard of hearing due to hundreds of metal concerts and danceclubs 3 times a week since i was 16, am now 49.
i also worked in a steelmill for 30 years.

i have permanent ear nerve damage. there is a very loud ringing/chirping in my ears. conversation sounds muffled.

if i didn't sit next to her i could never ever hear/understand what she was saying, especially in a room where many people are talking.

maybe this particular guy you are referring to was hard of hearing also.

message 13 - you sound high maintenance. you didn't have anywhere to put your purse?
if this and the other things you mentioned upsets you then good luck lady.

I prefer to sit opposite my date. Unless he's my partner, I don't care for anyone to be in such an intimate space. ( the exception would be a hair stylist, for example )

I prefer sitting next to my date, mostly so when she's chowing down on her chicken-fried steak she doesn't spit food particles at my face that get stuck on my glasses.

I prefer to sit across the table from my date, for the simple reason that it's so much easier to make eye contact or hold his gaze.... easier to watch body language as well. When my one guy friend and I go out for dinner, we sit across the table from each other, but when his kids are with us, he'll sit next to me. In my country of origin it's unheard of that a dinner is over in less than an hour, it usually goes on for at least 2 - 3 hours and when you're having a really good time, it could last up to 4 hours. We take our time enjoying the dinner and company, and we talk a lot .... no dinner in silence!

I've heard (forgot the name of the study or who conducted it) that when a couple first starts dating, they tend to sit opposite each other, then as the relationships progresses they tend to sit next to each other. It's just to feel more close, nothing sexual.

I am that kind of guy who will ask politely. It is a romantic gesture. It is all romance.

Waiters in your country must be pissed off all the time.

No they're not, they don't get paid minimum (or less than minimum) wages and are usually tipped very well! They are also extremely good mannered and wouldn't dare rolling their eyes at you if they think you're staying too long. Keep in mind that they are used to people coming in and taking their time at having dinner, that's how they grew up as well!

@abelian.... I love being with my man,... but I don't think everyone around me wants to see it... this couple that sat near me and a man I was with this past weekend were all over each other.. he was even rubbing ice on her chest because it was hot.....

when I am at dinner I want to talk to the person I am with... I want to be able to see their face.... watch their expressions.... I don't need to touch someone to feel connected to them....

I always thought it was weird until one guy I started dating seriously sat next to me once at dinner. From then on he always did it and I actually liked it. (No sexual stuff ever happened!) Haven't done that with anyone since.
My last boyfriend always wanted to sit across from me so he could look at me. Even when we were out with other couples he insisted on this. Now that was weird to me - either I'd end up sitting next to my best friend's boyfriend or the two guys would be sitting next to each other.

I think it's very sweet to sit beside each other. If I like someone, it's just so much nicer to be a little closer to them - like you're really sharing the meal and conversation. It's much more romantic than being separated by the table.
